1. GE_SNP Description
The GE-SNP Serial driver allows the FieldServer to transfer data to and from devi es over
either RS-232 or RS-485 using GE-SNP Serial proto ol. The FieldServer an emulate either a
Server or Client.
The FieldServer provides fun tions to read and write PLC memory and hange the privilege
level. Standard SNP mailbox messages are used. The driver does not support Datagram
messages and annot parse them. These messages are defined by the SNP proto ol to allow
multiple data types to be pa ked into one message. They are not ommonly used by the HMI
and 3
rd
party appli ations and are in onsistent with the FieldServer’s Write Through and Port
Expander apabilities.

3. Har ware Connections
The FieldServer is onne ted to the GE PLC in one of two ways.
Almost every GE PLC has a RS-232 and RS-485 port. Possible able onfigurations are
illustrated below.
A onverter is required to onne t between RS-232 and RS-485. An example of onne tion
onfigurations for the Model480TLED onne tor is depi ted overleaf. Any equivalent onne tor
an be used.

4. Configuring the Fiel Server as a GE_SNP Client
For a detailed dis ussion on FieldServer onfiguration, please refer to the FieldServer
Configuration Manual. The information that follows des ribes how to expand upon the fa tory
defaults provided in the onfiguration files in luded with the FieldServer (See “. sv” sample files
provided with the FieldServer).
This se tion do uments and des ribes the parameters ne essary for onfiguring the FieldServer
to ommuni ate with a GE_SNP Server.
4.1. Data Arrays/Descriptors
The onfiguration file tells the FieldServer about its interfa es, and the routing of data
required. In order to enable the FieldServer for GE_SNP ommuni ations, the driver
independent FieldServer buffers need to be de lared in the “Data Arrays” se tion, the
destination devi e addresses need to be de lared in the “Client Side Nodes” se tion, and
the data required from the Servers needs to be mapped in the “Client Side Map Des riptors”
se tion. Details on how to do this an be found below.
Note that in the tables, * indi ates an optional parameter, with the bold legal value being the
default.

Map Des riptor names may be used in driver error messages. It is not essential, but it is useful to use unique names.
RDBC = read blo k ontinuous. The driver will read data from the PLC ontinuously.
The Node must have been defined in the Nodes se tion of the CSV file. The Node Name onne ts this Map Des riptor to a Node whi h in turn onne ts the Map Des riptor to a port.
The address and length spe ify the first element and the number of elements that must be read from the PLC’s data tables. GE PLC’s referen e data tables starting at element 1. Unless otherwise spe ified, the driver reads bytes and words. This Map Des riptor reads bytes of data overing %I1 to %I79

This example writes data from the FieldServer Data Array alled DA_AO to the PLC identified as NODE1. The write is repeated

• Every 2

message Times Out A possible ause is that the poll frequen y is so low that
the time between polls is greater than the Max Link Idle Time (of the PLC). If the time is
ex eeded the onne tion is losed. Thus when the next poll is re eived by the PLC it
ignores it and hen e it times out in the FieldServer. After timing out, the driver re-establishes
the onne tion for the next poll.
• Very slow Comms Rate A timer known as the T1 timer is the minimum time that must pass
before a response to a message an be sent. Both ends of a SNP onne tion have their
own T1 timer (hard oded in the driver). When a onne tion is made the timers are
ex hanged and the larger of the two is used. The drivers T1 timer is set to a very small
number. SNP message #6 indi ates the size of the T1 timer. You may need to onfigure the
PLC to improve ommuni ations.
• Multi rop RS-485 networks. SNP proto ol spe ifies that their may only be one master
on a network at a time. When using nameless Nodes (Node_id=0) there may be one and
only one PLC on the onne tion.

PLC’s T1 (Inter message) timer. This message is
produ ed when the PLC returns a T1 timer that is larger
than the driver’s timeout. Using this timer will mean that
every message will timeout. In rease the timeout for the
Node, onne tion or Map Des riptor as appropriate.

This message uses two lines of the error log. It is printed
when a slave de lines a request. The major and minor
faults are reported. These numbers are printed in
hexade imal. See Appendix C.3 for further details. The
message reports the Map Des riptor whi h generated the
reje ted poll, the data type, the address and the number of
elements being requested. Often this message will be the
result of a poll that requests data past the end of a PLC
data table or when the length is based on a bit ount but
the poll a tually requests bytes.
