Flex-a-Lite 425 User manual

Be sure the engine is cool before you start working on your car. For added safety, disconnect your
battery to keep the fans from coming on while you are working under the hood.
FAN INSTALLATION (Diagram A)
Step 1:Unbolt and remove OEM fan shroud from radiator. Retain the bolts as they will be used to
secure the FAL fan.
Step 2:Remove the four bolts holding the fan clutch and fan assembly to the water pump. It is very
important that you re-install the four nuts back onto the pulley. You may need to use washers to “shim”
the bolts.
Step 3:The FAL fan has cutouts in the bottom for the tabs on the radiator, to prevent interference with
the water pump. Mount the supplied bracket to the top of the fan using the included screws.
Step 4:Place the tabs into the cutouts on the bottom of the fan. Pivot the fan forward and determine
which of the supplied spacers are required for your application. Using the factory bolts, secure the
fan assembly to the radiator making sure the bulb seal is pressed to the core of the radiator.

Fan Wiring Instructions
Step 1: Locate mounting point for control
Locateamountingpointforcontrolnearinletsideofradiator. Control needs to be placed within 18" of
radiatorinlethose. Youmaywanttomount nexttoradiator onfenderwell. Mountcontrolusing screws
provided.
Step 2: Wire the fan motors (refer to Wiring Diagram, below)
Usingthebullet connectors provided, attacha length of thelargediameter (12AWG) red wireto the
colored motor wires at fan. Attach a length of the large diameter (12AWG) black wire to the black motor
wiresat the fan. Oncethefan isinplace, thesewillattach to thecontrolmodule. If mountingthecontrol
somewherein theenginecompartment, leaveenoughwire toreachthe controlmodule,but donotcon-
nectyet.
Step 3: Connect the motorwiresto the control moduleusingsuppliedfemale connectors
(Redwireto the "M+" terminalandblack wire to the"M-"terminal).
Step 4: Disconnectthe negative battery leadforsafetywhile finishing the wiring. Use thelargediameter
red wiretorun power directlyfromthe battery positive(+)terminalto the "B"terminalon the control
module. Connectthe fuse holderin-linewith thiswire,as shown,butdo not insertthefuse yet. Usethe
bluefemale, ring,andbutt connectorsprovided.
Step 5: Usethe large diameter black (12AWG) wire torunfromthe negative (-) battery terminal to the
"G"terminal on thecontrolmodule. Use the bluefemaleconnector and ringconnectorprovided.
Step 6: Usethe small diameter red wire (14AWG)to connect the "+" terminal on the controlmoduletoa
positivepowersource. NOTE: Attaching this wire to an ignition-controlled source will shut off the
fan when the engine is turned off. Attach this wire to an uninterrupted (always hot) power
source to allow the fan to continue running after the engine is shut off. Use the blue female
connectorand fuse taps(included)ifnecessary.
Step 7: (Optional)Forairconditioning control (if desired) connect the "C"terminalonthe control module
tothe positive wirethattriggerstheA/Ccompressor using the small diameter green (14AWG) wire.
Usingavoltmeter, determine which wire coming fromthecompressoristhe positive triggerwire. Use
the3-wayconnector (included) totapinto this wireandsenda signal tothefan control module. Thefan
willcycle on andoffwiththeA/Cclutchwhen theA/Cis turnedon.

Step 8: (Optional)Formanualswitch operation, use Flex-a-lite p/n 31148. Connect the switch asshown
onthewiringdiagram (previous page). Connect the "M" terminalonthecontrolmodule to the "#1"
terminalontheswitch. Connect the "#2" terminal on theswitchtoapositive 12v power source. Connect
terminal"#3"onthe switch to a good ground(forswitchillumination). NOTE: To prevent thermostatic
activation (if only manual switch operation is desired), omit the lead to the "+" terminal of the
control box. "B", "G", "M+" and "M-" must remain connected. If not using a Flex-a-lite manual
switch, do not connect a ground wire to the switch!
Step 9: Usethezip ties provided to securethewiresand prevent them from interferingwithfanblades,
belts,and pulleys intheengine compartment. Reconnectthebattery andinsertthe 30 ampfusepro-
vided.
Step 10: Insert the temperature probe into the radiator fins
Install temp. probe near inlet hose... then install the insulator cap.
Locatetheinlet hose from theengineto the radiator. Removetheblack insulator cap andinsertthe
temp.probe through theradiatorfins near theinlethose. Reinstall the blackinsulatorcap.
Ifyou disconnectedanyhoses ordrainedcoolant toinstallthe fan,reconnectthe hosesandrefill the
radiator. Pressthe control knob(includedin wiring kit)ontothe control boxshaft. Turnthe knob clock-
wiseuntilitstops. Startthe engine and allow it toidle. Usingahandheld temperature sensor (posi-
tionednear the inlethose)or thevehicle'stemperature guage,monitorthe temperature. When thecool-
anttemp. isslightlyabove normal(ordesiredtemp.),turn theknobcounter-clockwise justuntilthe fan
turnson. From nowon,the fanshouldactivate atthistemperature setting. Adjust asnecessaryto main-
taindesiredtemperature.

defects in material and workmanship for a period of 365 days (1 year) from date of purchase. Flex-a-lite products failing within 365 days (1 year) from date of purchase may
be returned to the factory through the point of purchase, transportation charges prepaid. If, on inspection, cause of failure is determined to be defective material or workmanship
and not by misuse, accidental or improper installation, Flex-a-lite will replace the product free of charge, transportation prepaid. Flex-a-lite will not be liable for incidental,
progressive or consequential damages. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may
not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights, which vary from state to state.
