Manual introduction
This is the user manual of the ADL-Stand. This product is developed, manufactured and
distributed by Focal Meditech B.V. or one of its authorized representatives.
This manual contains important information regarding the ADL-Stand, its intended use and
possible consequences of usage. The aim of this information is to ensure successful, safe and
effective use of the device. This manual contains essential information for using the ADL-Stand,
information about safety issues and contact information.
Please read this information carefully: increase of knowledge of the arm support will result in
an increase of effectiveness. Important: always keep this user manual in a convenient location
for easy reference.

of the straw is located near the user’s mouth, without disturbing the user in his or her head
movements or while speaking.
It is important that the user and the ADL-Stand are always in the same, optimal position
relative to each other. If the ADL-Stand was driven away, for example during the care of the user
or during cleaning work, it must return to the same position and at the same angle relative
to the user. Family or carers should check if objects using the ADL-Stand can really be easily
reached using the ADL-Stand.
Warning: If the user experiences problems using the ADL-Stand, please contact Focal
Meditech or a healthcare professional as soon as possible.
Risks and contra-indications
No essential user risks are known while using ADL-Stand. ADL-Stand is an aid which should be
only used by the intended users. However, there are no known contra-indications for ADL-Stand.
To be able to use ADL-Stand the following warnings must be taken into account.
Warning: Make sure the knobs are always tightened firmly.
Warning: Do not overload the ADL-Stand. If there is any doubt about the stability, try the
setup first in a safe area (away from the user) to see if there is no tendency to tilt.
Warning: The gooseneck is a bendable part. This means that there may also be overload
of the gooseneck. This is reflected by the (often gradual) bending of the gooseneck with
a modified, incorrect setting of the accessory as a result.
Warning: When ADL-Stand is used as a cup holder, check whether the user suffers from
swallowing disorders. They should use the ADL-Stand only under expert supervision. If in
doubt, consult a speech therapist.
Warning: In case of doubt about the safety of the device, the product should not be
used anymore. Do not try to fix it yourself but contact Focal Meditech or its authorized
representative. Failure to do this will void the warranty.
Warning: ADL-Stand does not have parts that can be modified or repaired by the user or
other persons. Do not modify any part of this equipment without the manufacturer’s
authorization. Failure of this can lead to malfunctioning and void the warranty.
Intended use and operation of the device
Intended use
ADL-Stand is a tool for people with a need for support with drinking. It is designed for people
who want to be able to drink independently.
Intended users
The intended users of the ADL-Stand are:
1 Users are often individuals with advanced neuromuscular conditions such as muscular
dystrophy.
2 People with high spinal cord injuries.
3 People with conditions such as MS, rheumatism or Parkinson’s may also be discussed.
4 Combinations of these.
Operation of the device
The ADL-Stand is a system that consists of several rods which are interconnected via a pivoting
point. At the distal end of the system an accessory is mounted. ADL-Stand is mounted on the
‘solid’ worktable, working/ wheel chair or movable carrier.
ADL-Stand has a robust design combined with a large variety of adjustable settings. Therefore,
the ADL-Stand is easy to adapt to the users need.
The user of ADL-Stand can use this device in various environments like home, workplace, school
or institutional setting. A restricted tolerance of environmental humidity exists.
ADL-Stand is not designed to be used in combinations of large forces. ADL-Stand cannot be
used as a support when standing up or getting seated.
ADL-Stand is not designed to withstand impacts that can be introduced during collisions with
a wall or other objects (if mounted on a wheelchair). Also, ADL-Stand is not constructed to
withstand high external vertical forces that can be introduced for example by abnormal use or
patient hoist systems (if mounted on a wheelchair).
Usage of the device
The use of the ADL-Stand is easy. The use is aimed at packing or reaching objects in a very
limited area of activity. After the right choice for a piece of equipment, a good setting and
positioning are essential. The user may need help for this. When it comes to grabbing, let the
user indicate the space where objects can be reached the most easily. Now place the ADL-Stand
on the user’s predetermined side. Set the height setting with the knob on the vertical tube,
such that the accessory is located in his easily accessible area. Use if needed the joint in the rod
system for the desired height/ angle. Check that the intended area is indeed easily to reach.
With the gooseneck, the setting can be refined. By turning the accessory on the gooseneck,
the angle of the accessory can now also be set relative to the user. When used as a drinking
aid, the use of a straw is assumed. The ADL-Stand should be set up in such a way that the top

Adjusting the height of the ADL-Stand
In order to adjust the height of the ADL-Stand, loosen the knob for the height adjustment. The
Rod system can be raised or lowered. Tighten the knob for the height adjustment when the
ADL-Stand is at the desired height. Always slide the locking against the vertical mounting tube
and tighten the Allen screws.
Warning: For safety reasons the height blocking ring should always be in contact with
the chair adapter.
Warning: Check before using the ADL-Stand always if all knobs and bolts are tightened.

Description
The following parts of ADL-Stand are described:
•Cup holder clamps the drinking cup.
•Gooseneck this part is bendable to adapt the orientation to the right angle.
•The Adapter connects the devices to the rod system
•The rod system can be used when there is a distance between the person and the vertical
mounting tube.
•Joint angle adjustment point is the place where the angle of the ADL-Stand can set to the
desired angle or be folded to save space when not in use.
•Clamping lever Angle adjustment can be used to quickly loosen or fasten the joint.
•Lock ring this provides a fixed height position to secure the rod system.
•Knob height adjustment can be used to quickly loosen or fasten the tube for height changes
•Vertical mounting tube brings the stand to the desired working height.
•The carrier makes it possible to roll the ADL Stand to the desired position.

Fold and fold out the ADL-Stand
If ADL-Stand is not used for a while it is recommended to fold the rod system. This will provide
a safe situation for both ADL-Stand and its surrounding. The same procedure apply for the table
clamp and the chair.
Fold the ADL-Stand
STEP 1: Remove cups and or other parts that not belong to the ADL-Stand
STEP 2: Loosen the clamping lever
STEP 3: Rotate the rod system downwards
STEP 4: Tighten the clamping lever
Fold out the ADL-Stand
STEP 1: Loosen the clamping lever
STEP 2: Rotate the rod system to the desired height
STEP 3: Tighten the clamping lever
STEP 4: Check if the settings are right and if the ADL-Stand is safe to use
Warning: Check always (after folding out) the settings of the ADL-Stand for tilting issues
and or loosen bolts/knobs.
Adjusting the angle of the ADL-Stand
In order to adjust the angle of the ADL-Stand, loosen the clamping lever. The rod system can be
tilted up or down to the desired location. Tighten the clamping lever when the ADL-Stand is at
the desired angle. Adjust the gooseneck so that the top of the cup-holder is parallel with the
floor.
Warning: Check before using the ADL-Stand always if all knobs and bolts are tightened.

Accessories
The ADL-Stand can be used in combination with various accessories in order to use ADL-Stand
for different activities. In some combinations, it is possible to use different accessories at the
same time.
Cupholder
The cupholder has a holder adjustable by a handle. The holder is able to securely hold cups of
varying diameter. The cup placed in de cupholder rests on a small plateau at the bottom.
Warning: Using the cupholder for cups with hot liquids is strongly discouraged.
Controls
There are no electrical / software controls available for ADL-Stand.

Maintenance instructions
Maintenance hardware
Do not place the device in direct sunlight or in the direct vicinity of a heat source, otherwise
this might result in discolouration or scorching of plastic parts. Direct sunlight may reduce the
lifetime of system parts and interfere with operation.
All parts must be regularly inspected. If any part is visibly damaged, do not use the device. It
is prohibited to physical modify ADL-Stand. There are no serviceable parts inside ADL-Stand.
Contact Focal Meditech for any maintenance issues.
Cleaning
Maintenance of ADL-Stand is limited. The ADL-Stand can be cleaned using a moist cloth and a
non-aggressive cleaning agent.
Reuse
To reuse ADL-Stand, it has to be disassembled and reviewed by a professional from Focal
Meditech or a certified professional that is approved by Focal Meditech or one of its authorized
professional. ADL-Stand must intensively be cleaned and inspected.
Focal Meditech will refurbish and repackage the reused ADL-Stand in such a way that it will
meet the safety and performance requirements according to applicable regulations.
Decommissioning
Installation instructions
Installing the ADL-Stand on a (electric)wheelchair
However the ADL-Stand can be used on its carrier there can be a need to mount it on an electric
wheelchair. For this case Focal Meditech has develop multiple adapters for mounting on several
wheelchairs. The installation instructions (how to fixate the adapter) comes with the adapter.
Most of those adapters will be mounted to the backrest of the wheelchair, the key point is to
find an angle position of the backrests where the user sits comfortably and has a good drinking
position. The adapter will need to be installed to meet those needs.
Warning: Using the cupholder for cups with hot liquids is strongly discouraged.
Warning: Using the cupholder while driving your wheelchair is strongly discouraged.
