Safety Precautions
Attention
- Pay careful attention when using itnear thefollowingdevices:
1. Cell phones (aka. Mobile phones)
2. Smart phones(i.e. iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.)
3. PHS handsets
4. High power transceivers (or similar devices)
5. Microwave ovens
6. Radars
7.Weldingmachines
8. Anyother spark dischargingorhigh-intensity, radio-wave

(Note: Keep the instrument at least50 cm awayfrom the PHS
terminals, cell phones and smart phones.)
- When the "low battery" indicator appears, replace old batteries
with the new ones immediately. If you are usingNi-MH
rechargeable batteries, remove and recharge the batteries with
the designated charger. Replace thebatteries when theyare fully
charged.
- Replace primary batteries with standard AAalkalinebatteries.
- To prevent electricalshort-circuit; remove the batteries from the
SurveyMeterfor disposal. Failure to do so maycause excessive
heat generation, rupturing or combustion leadingto personal
death, injury andfire.

- For secondary batteries, use the standard Ni-MH rechargeable
batteries.
- Do not mixthe batterytypes (the standard AA alkaline with Ni-MH

The NSN3 detectorof contains flammable gas. Follow the attentions below.
Attention
- Flammable gas is used in the Detector.
- Do not use the product near fire.
- Do not throw the product into an open fire.
- Do not expose the product to shock or impact.
- Do not drop the survey meter. As this willdamage thedetectorand
flammable gasmay leak, leading to fire or explosion.
- If you have anyquestions, contactoursalesrepresentative or agency.
Disposal of Electronic Equipment
Dispose this product as an industrialwaste.

1. General
Thisequipment is the Portable Neutron Survey Meter, to measure theNeutron Dose
Rate and theAccumulated Dose at Neutron Fields in nuclear facilities or accelerator
facilities. Lightweight and high sensitivityhave beenachieved by adoptingthe organic
mixed gas counter.
The measurement values are displayed on the screen. In addition, the count monitor
beeps and the LED flashes indicatingcounting activity.
The NSN3 operateson six standardAAalkaline or the optionalAANi-MH rechargeable
batteries.AnACAdapteris alsoavailable asanoption.
By using the USB Connector, the data can be transmittedto the PCand the RealTime
Dose Rate andAccumulated Dose are displayed on the PC by utilizing the optional
Maintenance Software.

- Detects neutrons. Pointthe detector to the object to be measured.

Attention

Display Unit to avoid incorrect operation.

(c) Operating Pad
- Use the operatingpad to switch between various functions. Referto the
Section 2.2 for details on displayunit.

- Press down the " | " to turn ON.
- Press down the " O " to turn OFF.

- Loosen the screwof PointA(shown in Figure 2-2), slide the Battery Cover
upward (in the direction indicated bythe arrow) to remove the Cover. Insert
sixbatteries according to the polarity (+,-) marks inside the Battery
Compartment. Refer to the Section4.3for details on "Battery Replacement".

Attention
- Always turn OFF the NSN3 before replacingbatteries.
-Insert newbatteries, observingthepolaritymarks (+/-) inside
the Battery Compartment.
- Use onlystandard AA alkaline batteriesorNi-MH
rechargeable batteries.
-When replacing batteries with standard AA alkaline batteries,
use sixnew batteries.
-When replacing the AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries, use six
fully recharged batteries.
- Always follow the instructions at your local government when
disposingthe used batteries.

(f) LED (Red)
- Flashes in response todetection count.The Light is continuouslyon when a
high Dose Rate isdetected.
(g) Power Jack
- Use only FUJIELECTRICapprovedACAdapter(optional) designatedforthe
NSN3. Failure to dothis may result ina malfunction or excessive heat
generation.
Attention
Use only the designated charger for rechargingAANi-MH
batteries.WhenrechargingNi-MHbatteries, open thebattery
covershown in Figure 2-2 and remove all the batteries.
Refer to the Section 4.3 fordetailson the "Battery
Replacement".
(h) USB Connector
- The USB Connector is usedfor data transfer. Remove the protecting rubber
cover and attach the optional USB Cable to connect the NSN3 to the PC. Do
not touch the USB Connectoras dirt ordustcould cause transmission failure.
Replace the rubber cover whennot in use to protect the Connectorfrom dust
and water.
(i) Tapped Hole for Tripod
- Screw a commercially available camera tripod into.
(j) Handle
- Use the handle for hand carry.
(k) Screw for Fastening Case Cap
- Unscrewonly at the timeof maintenance. Do not open the case
unnecessarily. The penetrationof foreign materials or waterinto internal
circuit may cause malfunction.

(l) Shoulder Belt Clasps
- Use the Belt Clasps to join the ends of theShoulderBelt to the NSN3 at2
points.
(m) Shoulder Belt
- At the time of carrying the SurveyMeter, attach the Belt to the NSN3 with its
Clasps. Refer to (l) shown in Figure 2-1.
(n) Screw for Fastening Battery Cover
- At the time of turningon of themain body, please fasten it well.Atthe time of
changingbatteries, unfasten it. Refer to (e).
(o)Indicator holder
- Preventthe fallingoff of the indicator.

(a) ENT Key
- Use the "ENT" Keyto display setup values/setup screen whilethe Dose Rate
isdisplayed.
- The"ENT"Key is also used to cancel or confirm variousparameters.
(b) ▲Key
- Use the "▲" Key to move the cursor up to the next selection.The"▲" Key is
also used to START, STOP,or RESET theAccumulation Process in the
Accumulation Mode.
- Bypressingthe "▲" Key in theMeasurement Mode, each displayis shown in
the followingorder:

- Use the "▼" Key tomove the cursor down to thenext selection. The "▼" Key
isalso used to START, STOP, or RESETtheAccumulation Process in the

(e) USB Connector
- The NSN3 can be connected to the PC by attaching the optional USB Cable
to the Connector. Remove the protective rubber coverand then attachthe
Cable.
- Theoptional Maintenance Software is required for the data communication
with the PC.
(f) Communication Connector
- Use the Connectorto connect theDisplay Unit to the Main Body.

- Displays Dose Rate Value indigital format.
(b) Unit
- Displays selected unit: "Sv/h"or"mSv/h".
(c) BatteryIndicator
- Indicates the battery level. Replace the standard AA alkaline batteries
immediately when the " " indicatorappears, indicatingthat the batterylevel
is low.WhenusingNi-MH rechargeable batteries, recharge the batteries with
the designated Charger (optional). Refer to the Section 4.3 for detailson the
"Battery Replacement" when replacing AA alkalinebatteries or recharging
Ni-MHbatteries.
(d) Accumulation Indicator
- Indicates that the NSN3 is accumulatingDose Values.WhenDoseValuesare
not beingaccumulated, "||" is displayed.
(e) Time Constant
- Indicates selected time constant: A,L, M, or S. Referto section 3.1 forTime
constantsettingand the section 5 fordetails onthe "Time Constant".
(f) Buzzer Indicator
- Indicates whether the count monitoringsound is ON/OFF.
(g) Clock Indicator
-Indicates that time display (clock) is displayed at position (h).
(h) Time Display (clock)
- Displays the current time (Hours: Minutes: Seconds).
(i) Communication Error
- Indicatescommunicationerrorbetween thedisplayand thedetectorboard.
Refer to the Section 8 for details on the "Error Code".
