Introduction
Thank you for purchasing an Orion Explorer Viking power wheelchair. Future Mobility
Healthcare (FMH) products provide safe personal mobility and we wish you many years of
enjoyment and value from your chair.
Orion Explorer Viking is designed for indoor and outdoor use on paths or pavement, by
owners who are capable of operating the standard joystick control and of maintaining a safe
sitting position while driving. Although Orion Explorer Viking is an easy chair to drive, we
recommend that you practice driving in a controlled situation until you are comfortable
maneuvering around your normal environments.
The safety precautions in this manual are general warnings only. You may find it necessary
to develop your own methods for safely solving frequently encountered challenges. Future
Mobility Healthcare encourages every owner to use good judgement and common sense to
safely determine what works best. Always consult your healthcare advisors for their
recommendations about safety methods. Future Mobility Healthcare is not liable for
injuries or damage resulting from failure to follow the warnings and instructions in this
manual, or from unsafe use of a Orion Explorer Viking power chair.
Your Orion Explorer Viking power chair should receive regularly scheduled maintenance.
Inspection, troubleshooting and adjustment procedures are included in this document.
Although all information in this manual is current at the time of writing, product
improvements are continuous and changes can be made at any time, making this
document out of date.
Please read the contents of this owner's manual, and the manuals for the charger and
controller before using your Orion Explorer Viking. There is important information about the
use and care of your power wheelchair that every Orion Explorer Viking user must be aware

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) from Radio Wave Sources
Power wheelchairs may be susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is interfering
electromagnetic (EM) energy emitted from sources such as radio stations, TV stations, amateur radio
(HAM) transmitters, two-way radios, and cellular telephones. The interference (from radio wave
sources) can cause a powered wheelchair to release its brakes, move by itself, or move in
unintended directions. It can also permanently damage a powered wheelchair's control system. The
intensity of the interfering EM energy can be measured in volts per meter (V/m). Each powered
wheelchair can resist EMI up to a certain intensity. This is called its 'immunity level'. The higher the
immunity level, the greater the protection. At this time, current technology is capable of achieving at
least a 20 V/m immunity level, which would provide useful protection from the more common sources of
radiated EMI. This powered wheelchair model as shipped, with a PG Drives controller, has an immunity
level of 20 V/m.
There are a number of sources of relatively intense electromagnetic fields in the everyday
environment. Some of these sources are obvious and easy to avoid. Others are not apparent and
exposure is unavoidable. However, we believe that by taking into account the warnings that follow,
your risk to EMI exposure will be minimized.
The sources of radiated EMI can be broadly classified into three types:
Hand held portable transceivers (transmitters-receivers) with the antenna mounted directly on the
transmitting unit. Examples include: citizens' band (CB) radios, "walkie-talkies", security, fire, and
police transceivers, cellular telephones, and other personal communication devices.
NOTE: Some cellular telephones and similar devices transmit signals while they are on, even when
not being used.
Medium-range mobile transceivers, such as those used in police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and
taxis. These usually have the antenna mounted on the outside of the vehicle.
Long-range transmitters and transceivers, such as commercial broadcast transmitters (radio and
TV broadcast antenna towers) and amateur (HAM) radios.
NOTE: Other types of hand-held devices, such as cordless phones, laptop computers, AM/FM
radios, TV sets, CD players, cassette players, and small appliances, such as electric shavers
and hair dryers, so far as we know are not likely to cause EMI problems to your wheelchair.

Powered Wheelchair Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)
Since EM energy rapidly becomes more intense as one moves closer to the transmitting antenna
(source), the EM fields from hand-held radio wave sources (transceivers) are of special concern. It is
possible to unintentionally bring high levels of EM energy very close to a powered wheelchair's
control system while using these devices. This can affect powered wheelchair movement and
braking. Therefore, the warnings that follow are recommended to prevent possible interference with the
control system of the powered wheelchair.
EMI Warnings
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from sources such as radio and TV stations, amateur radio (HAM)
transmitters, two-way radios, and cellular telephones can affect powered wheelchairs. Following the
warnings listed below should reduce the chance of unintended brake release or powered wheelchair
movement that could result in serious injury.

SUCH AS CITIZENS' BAND (CB) RADIOS, OR TURN ON PERSONAL COMMUNICATION

TURNED ON.
WARNING! BE AWARE OF NEARBY TRANSMITTERS, SUCH AS RADIO OR TV STATIONS, AND
TRY TO AVOID COMING CLOSE TO THEM.
WARNING! IF UNINTENDED MOVEMENT OR BRAKE RELEASE OCCURS, TURN THE POWERED
WHEELCHAIR OFF AS SOON AS IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.

Getting Started
Description of Orion Explorer Viking.
Orion Explorer Viking provides independence in mobility. It offers a great balance of comfort,
maneuverability, speed and power.

W en moving or storing an unoccupied Orion Explorer Viking, it is sometimes useful to be able to roll
t e unit wit out using t e joystick and motors. T is condition known as 'Freew eeling', and is ac ieved
by rotating mec anical drive-release levers t roug 90 degrees. T ese levers are located at t e end
of t e motors and are part of t e parking brake. T e freew eeling levers are turned by and.

Energy is supplied by two Group 24 batteries, which are accessed from the rear of the chair. Proper
use of Orion Explorer Viking involves charging the batteries every night.
The drive system consists of two independent drive motor/wheel units and a control module with a
joystick. The motors operate in both the forward and reverse directions. Motor speed and direction are
both controlled by the joystick. Moving the joystick forward (towards the front of the chair) causes the
wheelchair to move forward. The farther forward the joystick is moved, the faster Orion Explorer Viking
will move. (The maximum speed possible is approximately 10 km/h.). Moving the joystick back will
cause the chair to travel in reverse. Reverse speed is always less than forward speed. When the
joystick is moved to the right, the chair will turn to the right; when the joystick is moved to the left, the
chair will turn to the left. When the joystick is returned to the centre (neutral) position, (it will
do this automatically when it is released) the control system will bring the wheelchair to a smooth stop.
Upon stopping, electromechanical disc brakes will engage to prevent Orion Explorer Viking from rolling.
This is indicated by an audible 'click' from each motor. Work with your mobility device provider to
ensure that speeds and controller responses are programmed to your driving abilities and style.
User Interface.
Orion Explorer Viking's controller has been designed to be both accessible and comfortable. The user
has control over power on/off, speed, direction and maximum speed limit. In addition, the user is
constantly notified of the battery charge level and, should they occur, system faults. The driving
properties of the control system may be adjusted through programming. Contact your dealer for more
information.
Joystick.
The controller incorporates an ergonomically designed joystick for enhanced comfort and control.

Control Panel
On/Off Button: This button turns the VR2 on and off. Do not use this
button to stop the wheelchair, except in an emergency.
TruCharge Battery Gauge: This Is a 10 segment display which
indicates if the VR2 is switched on and gives the state of charge of
the battery. Additionally, any faults in the wheelchair's electrical
system are indicated by this display. Refer to the wheelchair's
documentation for more details.
Maximum Speed I Profile Indicator: This is a segment display which
indicates the maximum speed setting or which drive profile is
selected. The wheelchair's documentation will state whether the VR2 is
set up for maximum speed or drive profile operation.
Horn Button: This button operates the wheelchair's horn.
Speed/Profile Decrease Button: This button decreases the maximum
speed setting or selects a lower drive profile.
Speed/Profile Increase Button: This button increases the maximum
speed setting or selects a higher drive profile,
Actuator Button and LED: If the wheelchair is fitted with actuators, this
button(s) will enter and exit actuator adjustment mode. When In
actuator adjustment mode, the LED will be illuminated.
Joystick
This controls the speed and direction of the wheelchair Push the joystick in the direction you wish to go.
The further you push it, the faster the speed. Releasing the joystick stops the wheelchair and
automatically applies the brakes.
Charger and Programmer Socket
Only connect a PGDT Programmer or the charger supplied with the wheelchair into this socket. The
charger current must not exceed 12Amps and the charger must be fitted with a Neutrik NC3MX plug.
This socket must not be used as a power supply for any other electrical device.
Power Module and Joystick Cable
The Power Module contains most of the electronics for controlling the wheelchair. It has three main
connections to the batteries and each motor. The Joystick Cable links the Power Module to the Joystick
Module. For further information refer to the wheelchair manufacturer's documentation.

Care
• Avoid knocking your control system, especially the joystick,
• When transporting your wheelchair ensure the control system is well protected.
• To prolong the life of the control system, keep exposure to extreme conditions to a minimum. Always
clean your control system if it becomes contaminated with toad or drink.
• Use a damp cloth and washing up li uid mixed with water. Do not use abrasive or spirit based
cleaning agents.

Joystick: Wth the control system switched off, check that the joystick is not bent or damaged and
that it returns to center when you release it. If there is a problem do not use your
wheelchair and contact your service agent.

Electrical Brakes: This test should be carried out on a level floor with at least one meter clear space
around the wheelchair.
Switch on the control system.
Check that after 1 second the battery gauge remains on or flashes slowly.
Push the joystick slowly forwards until you hear the electrical brakes operate. The chair
may start to move.
Immediately release the joystick, you must be able to hear each electrical brake
operate within a few seconds.
Repeat the test three times pushing the joystick backwards, left and right respectively.
If your wheelchair is fitted with lights, turn indicators or seat adjustment
actuator, checks the operation of these.
Connectors: Check all connectors are secure, properly mated and free from damage.
Cables: Check condition of all cables for damage.
Joystick Gaiter: Check the thin rubber gaiter around the base of the joystick for damage or splitting.
Check visually only, do not handle the garter.
Mounting: Make sure the controller is securely fixed to your wheelchair. Do not over tighten any
screws.

The VR2 control system has been designed with the user's safety as the prime consideration It
incorporates many sophisticated self-test features which search for potential problems at a rate
of 100 times per second. It the control system detects a problem either in Its own circuits, or
in the wheelchair's electrical system, it may decide to halt the wheelchair depending on
the severity of the problem. The VR2 is designed to maximize the user's safety under all
normal conditions.
In spite of its sophisticated on, the VR2 cannot take into account circumstances which put the
wheelchair or the controller outside of their specified operating conditions, and so it is
important that the user follows the precautions below'
1) Do not drive the wheelchair:
a) beyond restrictions indicated in the wheelchair user manual, for example
maximum inclines, Curb height etc.
b) in places or on surfaces where a loss of wheel grip could be hazardous, for
example on wet grassy slopes.
c) if the controller Of other crucial components are known to require repair,
In the event of the wheelchair moving in an unexpected way RELEASE THE JOYSTICK. This
action will stop the wheelchair under any circumstances.
2) Although the VR2 control system is designed and manufactured to be extremely reliable
and each unit rigorously tested, possibility of a system malfunction always exists
(however small the probability). Under some conditions of detected system malfunction,
the controller must (for safety reasons) stop the chair instantaneously. If the physical
impairments of the user are such that a sudden braking action could result in a fall
from the chair, it is imperative that a restraining device such as a seat belt be
purchased and installed with the chair. Restraining devices should be used at all times
when the wheelchair is in motion.

Below is a list of self-help actions. Try to use this list before you contact your service agent. Go to the
number in the list which matches the number of flashing bars and follow the instructions.
If the problem persists after you made the checks described above contact your service agent
* If the programmable parameter, Motor Swap has been enabled, then left and right hand
references in this table will need transposing.
The battery needs charging or there is a bad connection to the battery.
Check the connections to the battery. If the connections are good, try
charging the battery.
The left hand motor* has a bad connection. Check the connections to the
left hand motor.
The left hand motor* has a short circuit to a battery connection. Contact your
service agent.
The right hand motor* has a bad connection. Check the connections to the
right hand module.
The right hand motor* has a short circuit to a battery connection. Contact your
service agent.
The wheelchair is being prevented from driving by an external signal. The
exact cause will depend on the type of wheelchair you have, one possibility is
the battery charger is connected.
A joystick fault is indicated. Make sure that the joystick is in the center
position before switching on the control system.
A control system fault is indicated. Make sure that all connections are secure.
The parking brakes have a bad connection. Check the parking brake and
motor connections. Make sure the control system connections are secure.
An excessive voltage has been applied to the control system. This is usually
caused by a poor battery connection. Check the battery connections.
A communication fault is indicated. Make sure that joystick cable is securely
connected and not damaged.

Handling Tips
Orion Explorer Viking has been designed as a high performance, maneuverable and very stable
power chair. If used improperly, however, there is always the risk of accident or injury. Future Mobility
Healthcare strongly recommends that you learn the characteristics of your wheelchair and safe
methods to perform the daily activities of your lifestyle in a controlled environment. Always use
common sense and good judgement when using Orion Explorer Viking. Please consult healthcare
professionals for advice and assistance to develop the skills and techniques you need to safely use
Orion Explorer Viking.
Proper balance is the key to maintaining the stability of Orion Explorer Viking. Reaching, bending,
and transferring to or from the chair will change the weight distribution and centre of gravity of both
yourself and Orion Explorer Viking.
Transfer activities.
Transferring into or out of a wheelchair is a very difficult maneuver and extreme care must be taken
when transferring without the aid of an attendant. Please make sure that the wheelchair is stabilized,
and will not move during your transfer. Take extra care to prevent tipping and use good body
mechanics to avoid personal injury.

Ramps and Inclin s.
Most drivers are capable of negotiating short inclines and declines using a power chair without
assistance. Please understand your own capabilities and practice with an attendant or healthcare
professional before attempting to negotiate an incline or decline independently. Always inspect the
ramp for potential hazards such as holes, slippery or uneven surfaces, etcetera, before starting up or
down. If you cannot see the entire ramp, please ask someone to inspect it for you.
When ascending a ramp always face forward and lean the upper part of your body slightly forward,
which will increase stability. If you have to stop on the incline, please avoid any abrupt or sudden
forward movement as you resume climbing.
When descending a ramp always face forward and ensure that you are seated well towards the back
of the seat. Please descend slowly and steadily, allowing Orion Explorer Viking's controller to
maintain a slow safe speed.

Curbs and Steps.
Curbs, steps and stairs are dangerous obstacles that confront wheelchair users. When you encounter
curbs, find a way around, or use the ramps now available in most locations. If you encounter steps and
there is no ramp available, do not drive up or down the steps. Avoid the steps by utilizing the
designated elevators now required in most locations.

Range.
A significant increase in range can be achieved by smooth driving with Orion Explorer Viking. Any time
rapid acceleration or sharp, fast turns are used, a large amount of energy is consumed. If it is possible to
accelerate slowly and to drive at a steady speed with few sharp turns, the range you will achieve from
each battery charge will be greatly increased. This driving style will also increase the life of your
batteries and the major drive components of Orion Explorer Viking.
Occupant Weight.
The maximum allowable occupant weight for Orion Explorer Viking is 300 lbs (136 kg). Orion Explorer
Viking has been designed for stability and reliability with this maximum load. Safety and performance
are compromised when this value is exceeded. Additional passengers and heavy packages are not to
be transported on Orion Explorer Viking.
General Operating Instructions.
1. Please charge the batteries fully before use. Nightly charging is encouraged.
2. Ensure that the drive wheels are ENGAGED by moving the free wheel levers so they point
upwards, for DRIVE.
3. Adjust the speed control to low.
4. With the joystick in neutral, switch the wheelchair power ON
. Move the joystick gently in the direction you wish to travel. If a higher speed is required adjust the
speed control knob.
6.To stop the wheelchair, release the joystick and allow it to return to the neutral position. The
controller will bring Orion Explorer Viking to a smooth stop. Almost immediately, a click will be heard,
indicating the automatic application of the electromechanical disc brakes.

Adjustments
The following adjustments may be made to Orion Explorer Viking. rmpad
Position (Fore/ ft & Lateral)
The multiposition armpads mount on the arm structure by inserting the flange
nuts provided into one of three slots in the bottom of the armpad. By choosing
the appropriate slot, lateral adjustment of the armpad is achieved by placing it in
narrow, standard, or wide settings.
These armpads can also be adjusted in the fore and aft direction. Before
completely tightening the bolts in the flange nuts, the armpad may slide back
and forth for desired positioning.
NOTE: It is possible to set the fore and aft position of the armpad in
such a way that flipping the arm backwards
interferes with the back cushion, or trying to swingaway
the controller or access the programmer port in the
controller ler is made difficult. When making adjustments,
try all normal uses of these components before tightening
the settings completely.

Seat Depth
Seat depth can be set from 17" to 20"
continuously.
Tools required: 1/2" wrench or socket
& ratchet.
There are four bolts, under the centre
of the seat, that hold the recliner
bracket in place, fore & aft. Loosen
these bolts as little as possible until the
back can slide back and forth. Move
the recliner bracket to the desired
depth. Retighten all four bolts crazy-
tight (20 in Ibs).
NOTE: We measure seat depth from
the front of the seat pan to the point
where the recliner bracket breaks the
plane of the seat pan at the back.
Footboard Height
The footboard may be adjusted over a large
range of heights. It is recommended that the
minimum ground clearance is 2".
Tools required: /32" Allen key bit and ratchet
Loosen the single bolt on the front of the
footboard bracket. Do not remove it. Slide the
assembly to the desired height and retighten the
bolt.
