2.0 Introduction
This manua exp ains how to use the GEM5000 andfi gas ana yser. The GEM5000 has
additiona functiona ity to the GA5000 gas ana yser. The GA5000 measures gas
concentrations on y, whereas the GEM5000 measures f ow and gas concentrations. The
GEM5000 measures f ow and ca cu ates the ca orific va ues of the gas as we as being a
usefu too for ba ancing the gas fie d. The GEM5000 gas ana yser may be used to monitor,
ca cu ate, adjust and record the f ow at each monitoring point.
This instrument may a so be used in GA5000 mode of operation if required. The operator
may change the ana yser between a gas extraction monitor (a GEM5000 gas ana yser) or a
andfi gas ana yser (a GA5000 gas ana yser). The mode of operation can be changed from
the ‘Specia Action’ menu. P ease refer to section ‘8.0 – Taking Readings’ for further
instruction.
The 5000 series of gas ana ysers comp ies with Part 15 of the FCC Ru es. Operation is subject
to the fo owing two conditions:
1) This device may not cause harmfu interference.
2) This device must accept any interference received, inc uding interference that may cause
undesired operation.
2.1 Safety instructions
Warning
The 5000 series of gas ana ysers can be used for measuring gases
from andfi sites and other sources as described in this manua .
The operator may be exposed to harmfu gases during the use of the
instrument. Inha ing these gases may be harmfu to hea th and in
some cases may be fata .
It is the responsibi ity of the user to ensure that he/she is adequate y
trained in the safety aspects of the gases being used and appropriate
procedures are fo owed. In particu ar, where hazardous gases are
being used the gas exhausted from the ana yser must be piped to an
area where it is safe to discharge the gas.
Hazardous gas can a so be expe ed from the instrument when
purging with c ean air.
 Note : Gas ana ysers are a sensitive piece of scientific equipment, and shou d be
treated as such. If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the
manufacturer, the protection provided by the instrument may be impaired.

2.2 Instructions for safe use
For A EX and IECEx the 5000 series of gas analysers are certified to Hazardous
Area Classification
II 2G Ex ib IIA 1 Gb ( a = -10ºC to +50ºC)
It is vita instructions are fo owed c ose y. It is the responsibi ity of the operator to
determine the protection concept and c assification required for a particu ar app ication.
(Reference European ATEX Directive 94/9/EC, Annex II, 1.0.6.)
The fo owing instructions app y to equipment covered by certificate numbers SIRA
11ATEX2197X and IECEx Directive SIR 11.0089X:
•The equipment may be used with f ammab e gases and vapours with apparatus
group IIA and temperature c ass T1.
•The equipment is on y certified for use in ambient temperatures in the range -10ºC
to +50ºC and shou d not be used outside this range.
•The equipment must not be used in an atmosphere of greater than 21% oxygen.
•Repair of this equipment sha be carried out in accordance with the app icab e code
of practice.
•When used in a hazardous area on y use GF5.2 temperature probe (SIRA
11ATEX2197X and IECEx SIR11.0089X). For connector C, the GF5.4 anemometer
(BVS 04ATEXE194) for use with ATEX on y. The ana yser shou d not be connected
to any other devices in the hazardous area inc uding the GF-USB ead (connector A)
or GF3.9 battery charger (connector B) supp ied with the ana yser.
Do not charge, recharge or open in a potentially explosive atmosphere.
In hazardous area only use “ emperature Probe GF5.2” in Connector B.

•If the equipment is ike y to come into contact with aggressive substances, e.g.
acidic iquids or gases that may attack meta s, or so vents that may affect po ymeric
materia s, then it is the responsibi ity of the user to take suitab e precautions, e.g.
regu ar checks as part of routine inspections or estab ishing from the materia ’s data
sheet that it is resistant to specific chemica s that prevent it from being adverse y
affected, thus ensuring that the type of protection is not compromised.
•The re ative pressure range is +/-500 mbar. Note, however, that the input pressure
shou d not exceed +/- 500 mbar re ative to atmospheric pressure and the output
pressure shou d not exceed +/- 100 mbar re ative to atmospheric pressure.

2.3 MCER S (applied for)
MCERTS is the UK Environment Agency's Monitoring Certification Scheme. The scheme
provides a framework within which environmenta measurements can be made in
accordance with the Agency's qua ity requirements. The scheme covers a range of
monitoring, samp ing and inspection activities.
The GEM5000 instrument is MCERTS certified on y if:

•The MCERTS ogo appears on the screen after initia power on.
 Note: MCERTS - Cross sensitivity tests using hydrogen su phide were not carried
out on this instrument. Therefore, users shou d be aware if H
2
S is present
on sites, as there may be an interferentia effect.
MCERTS promotes pub ic confidence in monitoring data and provides industry with a
proven framework for choosing monitoring systems and services that meet the
Environment Agency's performance requirements.
The Environment Agency has estab ished its Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) to
de iver qua ity environmenta measurements. The MCERTS product certification scheme
provides for the certification of products according to Environment Agency performance
standards, based on re evant CEN, ISO and nationa standards.
MCERTS certified instruments have been tested by an independent body to ensure that
they meet certain performance requirements. In addition the manufacturer of an MCERTS
product is regu ar y audited to ensure that the performance requirements of the
certification are being continua y met.
The 5000 series of gas ana ysers have been certified to Version 3.1 of the ‘Performance
Standards for Portab e Emission Monitoring Systems’.

4.0 GEM5000 optional products and accessories
4.1 Optional products
The GEM5000 gas ana yser has a number of optiona products for purchase which enhance
the usabi ity and enab e further ana ysis of data and reading information.

4.1.1 Pitot tube (optional)
The GEM5000 gas ana yser enab es the use of a pitot tube to aid accurate f ow
measurement. The pitot tube is used for gas extraction systems and the pressure
readings are taken in mbar. High gas f ow is ca cu ated in the ana yser in m
3
/hr (metres
cubed per hour).
4.1.2 Orifice plate (optional)
Geotech (UK) Limited recommends the use of orifice p ates as good practice when using
the GEM5000 gas ana yser, enab ing repeatabi ity in f ow measurement via a fixed
method. Orifice p ates are a specia ised product and configuration and Geotech (UK)
Limited does not current y manufacture or se spare parts for this product. P ease refer
to a specia ist supp ier if the use of Orifice p ates is required.
4.1.3 emperature probe (optional)
The GEM5000 gas ana yser has the faci ity to automatica y disp ay and record the
boreho e temperature via an optiona temperature probe.
When a temperature probe is fitted the temperature reading wi be disp ayed on the
‘Main Gas Read Screen’ and recorded with a other data.
 Note: Temperature probes with an Ex abe are part of the GEM5000 Ex certification
SIRA 11ATEX2197X and IECEx SIR11.0089X, and therefore certified for use
under the same conditions as the ana yser.
4.1.4 Anemometer (optional)
The GEM5000 gas ana yser has the faci ity to automatica y disp ay and record high f ow
via an optiona anemometer probe. It is designed to p ug into the instrument and
instant y provide a f ow indication. An anemometer probe adds f ow measurements to
the professiona reporting abi ity of the GEM5000 range a ong with gas concentrations,
pressure and temperature.
The anemometer has a simp e connection, a narrow diameter measurement head
(11mm), a wide temperature operating range (up to 80
o
C) and indicates f ows up to 40
m/sec.
When an anemometer probe is fitted to the ana yser the f ow wi be disp ayed in the
‘Main Gas Read Screen’ and recorded with a other data.

S filter (optional)
The GEM5000 gas ana yser has the capabi ity to use an H
2
S fi ter and is required as
standard if the compensated CO ce is fitted and configured at the time the instrument is
manufactured. H
2
S gas can have a cross-gas effect on the CO reading. By using a fi ter,
the H
2
S is removed from the gas samp e, therefore providing a more accurate CO
reading.
The fi ter on y needs to be used when you are trying to get rid of any possib e cross gas
effects H
2
S might have on other gases. Do not use the fi ter on a boreho es.
4.1.6 Gas analyser manager – GAM (optional)
Gas Ana yser Manager (GAM) enab es the operator to maximise the operation of the gas
ana yser. It enab es direct communication with the unit, features a simp e up oad and
down oad faci ity and is fu y compatib e with the atest Microsoft™ operating systems.

4.1.7 GPS (optional)
An optiona GPS feature is avai ab e for the GEM5000 gas ana yser. It enab es the site
engineer to automatica y ocate boreho e IDs using GPS sate ite signa from predefined
boreho e IDs up oaded from Gas Ana yser Manager or set on the ana yser when out in the
fie d prior to taking a reading. The GPS reading data is stored for each measurement
reading providing an audit trai confirming that a reading was taken.
4.1.8 Bluetooth dongle (optional)
An optiona B uetooth feature enab es the operator to set and uti ise B uetooth
techno ogy. This may be usefu when down oading gas readings from the ana yser to the
PC instead of connecting the ana yser to a PC via a USB ead. B uetooth may a so be
used to transfer Site IDs to other 5000 series gas ana ysers if required. B uetooth is
activated by p ugging the dong e into a pc USB port and switching on the B uetooth
option feature in the settings on the ana yser.
