properlyconfiguredforyourintendeduseandavailable
powersource�MotorsareNOTexplosion-proof�
• Checkelectricalwiringforlooseconnections,wornair
lines,andpinchedorfrayedwiringbeforeuse�
• Always use the factory-installed three-pronged plug
andconnectdirectlytoaproperlywiredandgrounded
three-pronged receptacle� Make sure the cord is lo-
catedwherenoonewilltriporgettangledinit�
• Disconnect and lock out the electrical power sup-
ply and the compressed air supply before performing
maintenanceandrepairs�

1.0 INTRODUCTION
TheGilsonHM-540AutomaticSoilProcessorisdesignedfor
fastandefficientpreparationofair-driedcohesivesoilsamples
for moisture-density relationship (Proctor) testing and other
geotechnical laboratory tests� Up to 40lb (18kg) of cohesive
soil can be processed in fifteen minutes through the No�4
screen�Thesampleismovedlaterallybetweentheupperand
lowerscreenswiththecoverinplace�Thesampleisreduced
without impacting particle integrity� The processor automati-
callyshutsoffwhenthecycleiscomplete�
2.0 UNPACKING
2.1 Inspection of Shipment
As soonasyourmachineisdelivered,inspectallcrates and
boxesforsignsoffreightorhandlingdamagebeforeuncrating
orunpacking�
Ifdamageisnoted,advisethefreightcarrierattimeofdelivery�
Ifseveredamageisnoted,refusetheshipmentduetofreight
damage�Ineithercase,adviseboththeshippingcompanyand
Gilson�Photographsarerecommended�
2.2 Uncrating
The HM-540 Automatic Soil Processor weighs over 500lb
(227kg)whencratedforshipping�Useappropriateequipment
andmanpowertouncrate,assemble,andinstalltheunit�Wear
safety glasses and work gloves� Save all packing materials
untilinspectioniscomplete�
TouncratetheSoilProcessor,followthesesteps:
• Remove metal straps from the shipping container with
suitablecutters�
• Removethetopofthebox/crate�
• Locatethepackinglistandcheckpartsandunitsagainst
thepackinglisttomakesuretheshipmentiscomplete�
• Remove wooden bracing and dunnage from the shipping
container�
• Do not remove wooden braces from inside the machine
untilthemachinehasbeenpermanentlyinstalled�
• Ifaccessoriesareincluded,unpackandremovethem�
• Cutallremainingbandsandremovethemfromthepallet�
3.0 LOCATION & INSTALLATION
3.1 Location
TheSoilProcessorshouldbelocatedinanareafreeofacidic
or contaminating fumes that could initiate corrosion on ma-
chinedsurfacesorelectricalcontacts�
Positionthemachinenearadedicated,groundedelectricalout-
letinanareawithaccesstoasupplyofclean,dry,compressed
air�Seeelectricalandpneumaticspecificationsbelow�
Afloor systemthat is flat,level,and sturdy is required for the
HM-540 Automatic Soil Processor� The machine weighs ap-
proximately500lb(227kg)andvibratesduringuse�
3.2 Installation
After placing the machine in the chosen location, use a car-
penter’sorsimilarbubbleleveltolevelit�Placethelevelalong
the frame of the machine� Adjust the industrial leveling feet
untilthemachineislevelside-to-sideandfront-to-back�
4.0 CLEANING
4.1 Removing Rust Inhibitor
The external surfaces ofyournewSoil Processorhavebeen
coated with a rust-preventative compound to protect it from
corrosionduringshippingandstorage�
Afterpositioningandinstallingyourmachine,therustinhibitor
mustberemovedpriortomakingtheelectricalandpneumatic
connections�
Caution:AlwaysusethecorrectPPE(PersonalProtective
Equipment)asspecifiedbythesolventmanufacturer�
• Dampenaclean,dryclothwithasuitablesafetysolvent
suchasCRCQuickCleanorsimilar�
NOTE: Do not soak cloth or rub painted surfaces vigor-
ously, as the solvent may attack the paint.
• Gently wipe the surfaces until tackiness is gone, then
gentlywipewithadrycloth�
4.2 Daily Cleaning
After each operational use, clean the processor with the
included compressed air hose or a shop vacuum and wipe
with a dry rag to prevent cross-contamination between soil
materials�
5.0 MACHINE CONNECTIONS & SETUP

and requires both an electrical connection and a supply of
compressedair�
5.1 Electrical Connection

phase,60Hz,groundedelectricaloutlet�
• HM-540Fmodeloperateson220V,50Hz�
Plugthepre-wiredcorddirectlyintotheappropriateelectrical
outlet�Donotuseextensioncords�
5.2 Compressed Air Connection
OperationofeachSoilProcessorrequiresanairsupplyrated
ataminimumof2CFM@90psi(57L/min@6�2bar),witha6gal
(22L) air receiver tank� An air compressor with greater CFM
capacityandlargerreceivertankwillcyclelessfrequently�
TheHM-540isequippedwitha1/4inquick-disconnectpneu-
matic fitting� Connect the air supply to the quick-disconnect

supplyfitting�Anadditionalquick-disconnectfittingissupplied
toconnectanairhoseoradditionalsoilprocessorunits�
5.3 Operations Check
When installation, leveling, and electric and pneumatic con-
nectionsarecomplete:
• Liftthelidfullytoitsupperrestingposition�
• TurnthepowerrockerswitchtotheONposition�
• Ensurethatthescreenisoscillatingbackandforthinthe
machine�
• Adjustthepressureregulatortobetween85and90psi:
o Pulltheadjustmentknobouttochangepressuresettings�
o Adjustthepressureupordown�
o Presstheknobbackintoset�
• TurnthepowerrockerswitchtotheOFFposition�
5.4 Setup
5.4.1 Sample Pan
TheHM-540issuppliedwitha40qt(38L)capacitygalvanized
ironsamplepantocollecttheprocessedsoil�Inuse,thepanis
positionedinthetopshelfposition,directlyunderthescreen�
For faster sample processing, order additional SC-3 Sample
PansfromGilson�
5.4.2 Lower Screen Inserts
The HM-540 is supplied with a removable lower screen with
4�75mm (No�4) openings� Replacement screens are available
withopeningsof4�75mm(No�4),9�5mm(3/8in),or19mm(3/4in)�
5.4.3 Air Blow Gun
Anairblowgun,mountedtoacoiledaircompressorhose,is
includedwiththeSoilProcessorandconnectsdirectlytothe
pneumaticfittingontheunit�Thisaccessoryisconvenientfor
quickcleaningoftheprocessortoavoidcross-contamination
betweensoilsamples�
YourGilsonAutomaticSoilProcessorisnowreadyforuse�
6.0 OPERATION
• Liftthelidassemblytoopenthemachine�
• Placeacleansamplepaninthetopshelfposition,directly
underthescreen�
• Placeasoilsampledirectlyonthelowerscreen�Maximum
samplecapacityisabout0�5ft3(14L)ofsoil�Levelthema-
terialandremoveexposedrocksifpresent�Rocksgreatly
acceleratewearofthescreen�
• Close the lid and turn the power rocker switch ON� The
machine processes the soil and shuts off automatically
justbeforethelidgratingmakescontactwiththescreen�
• TurnthepowerrockerswitchOFFandliftthelid�
• Removethesample pan of processedsoil and cleanthe
screenasnecessary�
7.0 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
The soil processor comes standard with upper grating for
standardprocessingofdrysoils�
The soil processor is supplied with a 4�75mm (No�4) lower
screen insert� 9�5mm (3/8in) and 19�0mm (3/4in) screens are
alsoavailable�Seesection9�0formodelnumbers�
8.0 PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
8.1 Cleaning & Inspection
Athoroughcleaningandinspectionofallmovingpartsshould
beperformedontheSoilProcessorperiodically,dependingon
frequencyofuse�
8.2 PVC Wear Strips
Cleaning and inspection of the PVC wear strips should be
performedatleastannually:
• Disconnect electrical and compressed air supplies and
openlidassembly�
• Removethetwonutssecuring therightendtubetothe
insideoftheframe�Liftofftherightendtube�
• Disconnect the air cylinder from the slide frame weld-
mentbyremovingtheclevispin�
• Lift the screen and sliding frame weldment out of the
frame�
• RemovethetwogreyPVCplasticwearstrips�Cleanthe
stripsandassesstheircondition�Theslidingframeweld-
ment should slide against these strips with low friction�
Replacethestripsifnecessary�
• Cleantheareawherethestripsaremountedandallex-
posedareas�
• Reversetheprocesstoreinstallallitems�
