1 General
References in these instructions to British Standards and
Statutory Regulations and Requirements apply only to the
United Kingdom.
For Ireland the rules in force must be used.
The instructions consist of two parts, Installation and
Servicing Instructions for the Fire and the Instructions for
Use. The instructions are an integral part of the appliance
and must, to comply with the current issue of the Gas
Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, be handed to
the user on completion of the installation.
1 General Notes and Information
There are three cardboard cartons, which together contain
all the parts necessary for the fitting of the fire.
You may also have a cardboard carton with a spacer kit in
and a cardboard carton with a gas supply kit in.
Chatsworth (black) only. The brass coloured badge on
this appliance can be replaced with a silver coloured
badge.

MANIPULATION.
1.1 Important Notice
This fire is for use only on G20 gas @20mbar supply
pressure.
The fire is fitted with a safety device (combustion
products discharge safety device) which will shut it
down if there is inadequate ventilation and the chimney
is not clearing the products of combustion.
If the fire shuts down for no apparent reason the flue/
chimney and air inlets into the room must be checked.
Any problems found must be put right, by a competent
person, before the fire is used again.
IN ALL cases the room must be ventilated before
attempting to relight the fire.
The safety device must not be bypassed or put out of
action.
The safety device must be serviced strictly in accordance
with the instructions in this book.
Sealed components must not be interfered with.
Servicing instructions and identification of parts is given
in Sections 6, 7, 8 and 9.
It is essential that only genuine Glow-worm parts are
used.
All WARNINGS and cautions in these instructions must
be observed.

1 General
Sheet Metal Parts
WARNING: When fitting or servicing this fire care
should be taken when handling sheet metal parts, to
avoid any possibility of personal injury.
1.2 Statutory Requirements
The fitting of this fire must be done by a competent
person, in accordance with the current issue and relevant
requirements of:-
Manufacturer’s instructions, supplied.
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations,
The Building Regulations, The Building Standards
(Scotland) Regulations, (applicable in Scotland),
The Health and Safety at Work Act, The Control of
Substances Hazardous to Health, The Electricity at
Work Regulations and any applicable local regulations.
Detailed recommendations are contained in the current
issue of the following British Standards and Codes of
Practice:-
BS1251, BS5440 Part 1 and 2, BS5871, BS6891,
BS7671.
Manufacturer’s instructions must not be taken as
overriding statutory requirements.
1.3 Certification
This fire is certificated for performance and safety. It is,
therefore, important that no alteration is made to the fire
without permission, in writing, from Hepworth Heating
Ltd.
Any alteration that is not approved by Hepworth
Heating Ltd., could invalidate the certification, the
warranty and could also infringe the statutory
requirements.
CE Mark
The CE mark on this fire shows compliance with:-
1. Directive 90/396/EEC on the approximation of the
Laws of the Member States relating to appliances
burning gaseous fuels.
2. Directive 89/336/EEC on the harmonization of the
Laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic
compatibility.
3. Directive 73/23/EEC on the harmonization of the
Laws of the Member States relating to electrical
equipment designed for use within certain voltage
limits.

1.5 Fire Location
This fire is suitable for hearth mounting only.
The fire must be secured to a vertical wall face.
This wall face may be a chimney breast or a surround
having a minimum flat area as shown in diagram 1.2.
The fire must not be fitted directly onto a carpet ,
combustible floor or combustible wall.
This fire MUST NOT be fitted in a room used or
intended to be used as a bathroom or shower room.
The fire can be fitted to a purpose made proprietary class
“O” - 100oC or 150oC surround.
The fire can be fitted to a precast flue conforming to the
requirements of the current issue of BS 1289 Part 1.
The fire can be fitted to a box and flue conforming to the
requirements of the current issue of BS715.
A suitable Flue Box and Flue, with instructions, can be
bought from:- Selkirk
Their product code No. 125BOX 0405905, see diagram
2.4 for insulation details.

1.6 Clearances
Restrictions must not be placed around the assembled
fire, see diagram 1.2.
A shelf or surround of a maximum depth of 150mm may
be fitted, provided clearances are as shown in diagram
1.2. However, for every 25mm extra above the fire the
depth of the shelf may be increased by 25mm.
Combustible furniture or materials must not be placed
closer than 1 metre to the front or sides of the fire.
1.7 Gas Supply
A concealed supply, from the rear, can be fitted.
It is necessary to protect the supply pipe with an
approved sheathing if the fire opening and flue have
been used for a solid fuel appliance.
The gas installation must be in accordance with the
current issue of BS6891.
The supply from the governed meter must be of adequate
size to provide 20mbar at the fire.
On completion test the gas installation for soundness
using the pressure drop method and suitable leak
detection fluid, purge in accordance with the above
standard.
1 General
1.8 Electrical Supply
WARNING: This fire must be earthed.
There are three methods of routing the cable.
Rear, right and left hand.
All system components shall be of an approved type and
shall be connected in accordance with the current issue
of BS7671 and any applicable local regulations.
Connection of the fire and system controls to the mains
supply should be through a common isolator, a double
pole isolating switch, fused 3A, should be used, having a
minimum contact separation of 3mm in all poles.
Wiring to the fire MUST be PVC 85oC insulated type
not less than 0.75mm2(24/0.20mm).
NOTE: Avoid all sharp edges when routing the cable.
1.9 Unpacking
There are three packs:-
Pack 1 - contains Body assembly, Fittings pack and
Fuel effect supports and pieces.
Pack 2 - contains Frame.
Pack 3 - contains Fret, Ashpit cover and (Baffle
Chatsworth only).
Diagram 1.3 shows the parts within the three packs.
Check contents of loose items pack against packed list.
You may also have a cardboard carton with a spacer kit
in and a cardboard carton with a gas supply kit in.

2 Flue System
The minimum effective height of the chimney must be
3metres.
Suitable flues and minimum sizes are as below:-
9in x 9in, 7in and 5in proprietary flue pipe.
125mm diameter conventional flue.
A brick built wall chimney properly lined with a single
wall, twin wall or flexible flue liner of minimum diameter
of 125mm. The materials to be used are stainless steel or
aluminium as specified in the current issue of BS715.
2.1 Front Opening, Catchment Space and
Minimum Opening Sizes
Note. Dimensions referring to catchment space on
diagrams are for 16 inch openings.
For fireplaces where the wall is not plastered and not
covered by BS1251 it is important that such installations
comply with the current issue of The Building
Regulations.
The catchment space and opening sizes must not be less
than dimensions as given in diagram 2.1.
Any combustible material, for example, blown vinyl wall
coverings, on the fire fixing face area of the surround
must be removed, see diagram 2.2.
2.2 Hearth Fixing
In ALL cases a fireproof hearth to the minimum
dimensions as shown in diagram 2.3 must be fitted.
2.3 Firebox
The fire can be installed using a firebox conforming to the
current issue of BS715, see Section 1.5.
The fire box must stand on non-combustible hearth of at
least 50mm thickness. The top sides and rear of the box
must be covered with a 50mm minimum thickness of
mineral wool insulation, see diagram 2.4.
NOTE: If the firebox is already fitted it must be insulated
as above.
2.4 Precast Flue
This fire is suitable for fitting to a precast flue.
There must be a minimum vertical equivalent height of
3metres. The minimum dimension in the horizontal cross
section of the flue shall be 90mm. The cross sectional
area of the flueshall be not less than 16500 mm2.

2 Flue and Ventilation
2.5 Precast Flue Minimum Opening Sizes
Refer to diagram 2.5.
Note: If a precast flue starter block to BS1289 Part 1 is
used. Fit a fire surround, if this does not give sufficient
depth to fit the fire fit a spacer kit. You may also remove
material as shown in diagram 2.5.
2.6 Check the Chimney
The chimney should be swept immediately before fitting
the fire.
However, where it can be seen that the chimney is clean
and unobstructed and there is no evidence that solid fuel
has been used, it need not be swept.
Remove any damper or register plate. Alternatively it
may be locked in the open position.
Before fitting the fire make sure that the base of the
chimney is clear of debris.
If the fire is to be fitted to a fireplace in which the air
enters from below floor level this supply must be sealed
off.
2.7 Test the Flue
Apply a lighted smoke match, or taper at the opening.
If there is a definite flow into the opening the fitting of
the fire can continue.
If there is no definite flow into the opening preheat the
chimney for about two minutes then recheck the flow.
If there is still no definite flow the problem MUST be
put right before continuing with fitting of the fire.

3.1 Fire Fixing - Electrical Cable Routing
It is essential at this time that you decide which way the
cable is to be routed.
Remove the burner and control box, take care not to
damage any components, see diagram 3.1.
1) Rear cable routing:
Make a hole in the grommet, push the cable through.
Refer to Section 1.8 and use enough cable to allow for
the future removal of the burner and control box, see
diagram 3.2.
2) Left and Right hand cable routing:
Refer to Section 1.8 and use enough cable to allow for
the future removal of the burner and control box, see
diagram 3.2.
Note: Avoid all sharp edges when routing the cable.
3 Electrical Supply, Gas Supply and Fire Fixing
3.2 Gas Supply - Connection
Refer to diagram 3.3.
Where the fire is fitted in nurseries, old people’s homes
and the like, the isolation device may be of the type
fitted with a removable key.
A flexible connection MUST NOT be used.
If the gas supply is through the rear of the appliance, the
angled gas service cock is used to isolate the fire.
Note: Left and right hand preformed pipe supply kits can
be bought. Part numbers 453925 (left hand) and 453926
(right hand). A means of isolating the gas inlet supply
must be fitted.

3.3 Fire Fixing
There are two methods of fixing the fire:-
Method 1 - Standard fixing, see diagram 3.4. Standard
fixing with Spacer Kit, see diagram 3.5.
Use a 10mm masonry drill bit to drill the fire fixing wall
face. Drill to a minimum depth of 40mm to accept the
reusable anchor nuts and screws.
Note. If the fire fixing wall face is not of a solid
construction, use the cable fixing method.
Method 2 - Cable fixing, see diagram 3.6. To fix secure
the four eyelets in the fire opening. Attach the cables to
the upper cable tensioning brackets at the rear of the
appliance. Thread the cables down through the eyelets,
forward through the holes at the bottom rear of the
appliance and out through holes in the lower cable
tensioning brackets. As you offer the appliance to the
wall pull the slack cable tight. Thread the cables through
the cable clamps pull tight and secure with the cable
clamp locking screws. Apply extra tension if required
using the adjuster wing nuts. Loop the excess cable, do
not cut it off.
Cable fixing with Spacer Kit, see diagram 3.7. Fit the
spacer kit to the appliance. Then follow the instructions
as Method 2 - Cable fixing.

3. 4 Electrical Wiring - Control Box
With the burner and control box already removed,
remove the control box lid, see diagram 3.8.
Connect the mains cable to the terminals as shown in
diagram 3.9.
CAUTION: Take care not to damage the PCB board or
loosen any other cables.
Refit control box lid.
Refit the burner, but leave the control box loose, to help
with the connecting up of the gas supply, see diagram
3.10.
Connect the gas supply, see diagram 3.11.
IMPORTANT: Restrain the mains cable using the clip
at the rear of the control box, see diagram 3.12.
Secure the control box ensuring any excess cable is to
the back of the control box.
NOTE: Avoid all sharp edges when routing the cable.

NOTE: The fire is fitted with a safety device.
The information in Section 1 must be observed.
4.1 Lighting and Testing
Remove the pressure test nipple screw and fit a suitable
pressure gauge, see diagram 4.1.
Turn the gas supply on at the mains supply and at the gas
service cock.
To check for gas soundness, apply leak detection fluid to
all joints.
Switch on electrical supply.
Lighting the Fire
Air may be present in the supply to the fire so that the
initial lighting operation may need to be repeated.
Check all three methods of lighting the fire:
1. Remote Handset
2. Control Box
3. Manual Control
WARNING! Take care when doing the following
checks, as the burner has a naked flame.
WARNING! The hand control must be kept in your
possession whilst doing the following checks.
IMPORTANT NOTE
"Remote or Control Box" lighting method. If a flame is
not detected during the ignition period the control will
go to lock out. Press the OFF button to reset.
Method 1. - Remote Handset.
Fit the two batteries supplied in the fittings pack
into the remote handset.
Set switch to Auto, see diagram 4.1.
Point hand control towards the control box.
Press either the Low, Med or High button to light the
fire, then, wait for 20 seconds before selecting the
desired setting. Check all settings Low, Med and High.
4 Lighting, Testing and Fitting of Internal Parts
IMPORTANT. IF DURING THE LIGHTING
PROCEDURE THE BURNER IS EXTINGUISHED OR
GOES OUT FOR ANY OTHER REASON, WAIT AT
LEAST 3 MINUTES BEFORE RELIGHTING.
REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO RELIGHT WITHOUT
THIS DELAY MUST NOT BE CARRIED OUT.
Method 2. - Control Box.
Press either the Low, Med or High button to light the fire,
then, wait for 20 seconds before selecting the desired
setting. Check all settings Low, Med and High.
IMPORTANT. IF DURING THE LIGHTING
PROCEDURE THE BURNER IS EXTINGUISHED OR
GOES OUT FOR ANY OTHER REASON, WAIT AT
LEAST 3 MINUTES BEFORE RELIGHTING.
REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO RELIGHT WITHOUT
THIS DELAY MUST NOT BE CARRIED OUT.
Method 3. - Manual Control
Set switch on control box to manual, see diagram 4.1.
Push in and keep in manual override spindle on gas
control, see diagram 4.1. Light the burner with a match or
spill, keep the control knob pushed in for about fifteen
seconds.
Using this method the fire will only work on Low setting.
IMPORTANT. If the burner goes out for any reason
wait at least three minutes before attempting to
relight.
Coal or Coke Lever
The aeration to the burner can be adjusted to give a
yellow Coal flame or a bluer Coke appearance.
To achieve these effects push the lever up for Coal effect
and down for Coke, see diagram 4.1.
Testing - Gas Soundness and Rate
With the burner lit, check all joints for gas soundness, at
all control positions, in accordance with the current issue
of BS6891.
Check that the gas pressure is as stated in the Data
Section or on the Data Label.
If there is any doubt about the gas rate, check at the meter,
having first turned off all other gas appliances and pilot
lights.

4 Lighting, Testing and Fitting of Internal Parts
The gas rate for this fire at high setting is 22.68 ft3/h
(0.8 m3/h).
Press the OFF button for "Remote" or "Control Box"
method or switch "Auto/Manual switch to Auto.
Remove the pressure gauge, refit the screw and make
sure that a gas tight seal is made.
4.2 Fire Frame
Remove the frame from the packaging.
Fit as shown in diagram 4.2.
4.3 Fuelbed, Fret and Ashpit Fitting
CAUTION. If the fuel effect bed supports and fuel
effect pieces are damaged, do not light the fire or further
test until replacement parts are fitted.
USE ONLY THE FUEL EFFECT APPROVED FOR
THIS FIRE.
DO NOT USE MORE FUEL EFFECT PIECES THAN
SPECIFIED.
DO NOT CHANGE THE LAYOUT OF THE FUEL
EFFECT PIECES.
Chatsworth only - Remove the baffle plate from the fret
pack and fit as diagram 4.3.
The importance of positioning the fuel effect pieces
correctly cannot be overemphasised if sooting is to be
avoided. The flame effect may also be impaired and the
life of the fuel effect pieces reduced if assembly directions
are not followed.
Before positioning the fuel effect pieces, study carefully
the illustrations showing the layout procedure of the
pieces, see diagram 4.4.
Follow the steps which are shown numerically in the
fuelbed fitting sequence starting at Step 1, making sure
that each stage is completed before carrying on to the next
and that all written instructions are adhered to, see
diagram 4.4.
STEP 1. When fitting the front support make sure the
feet are located at the back of the retaining lip and the
support fits between the brackets.
STEP 2. Fit the side supports tightly into the front
corners touching the side and front of the appliance.
STEP 3. Fit the rear support, make sure it sits on the
bottom of the brackets, by pushing it down firmly.
STEP 4. Fit the middle support over the burner make
sure it sits behind the brackets on the burner. Keep the
support clear of the cross lighting ports.
STEP 5. Place the two large fuel effect pieces with the
flat bases and round indents down. Leave gaps around
the pieces.
NOTE : The remaining fuel effect pieces can be turned
as required to maintain a constant gap around each fuel
effect piece.
STEP 5 CONTINUED. Place four small fuel effect
pieces starting from the outside. Leaving gaps around the
pieces. The left hand outside piece must touch the side of
the fire. The right hand outside piece must touch the left
hand side of the burner support bracket.
STEP 6. Place seven small fuel effect pieces on the
middle support starting from the outside.

STEP 7. Place six small fuel effect pieces on the six flat
areas of the rear support starting from the outside.

STEP 8. Place five small fuel effect pieces on the top of
the rear support starting from the outside overlapping
slightly the previously fitted pieces and touching the rear
of the fire. Leaving gaps around the front and side of the
pieces. The two outside pieces do not touch the sides of
the fire.
When you have fitted all the small fuel effect pieces you
may have to adjust some slightly to maintain even
spacing.
Fit the fret and ashpit cover as shown in diagram 4.5 and
4.6.
Take care not to damage the frame.

4.5 Testing for Clearance of Products
The fire must be fitted with all its parts.
Make sure that all doors and windows in the room are
closed.
Using the remote handset, light the fire, set to high and
coke, run for five minutes.
Insert smoke match as shown in diagram 4.7.
Check that most of the smoke is drawn in.
If there is any doubt, leave the fire alight for a further
ten minutes and repeat test.
If there is a fan in an adjacent room, open the
interconnecting doors, light the fire and repeat the test
with the fan running.
In ALL cases, if spillage occurs the cause must be found
and put right before the fire is left.
IF THE FAULT CANNOT BE PUT RIGHT, THE FIRE
MUST BE DISCONNECTED AND EXPERT ADVICE
SOUGHT.

5 Instructions to User
Hand the Instructions for Use to the user and make sure
that they are understood.
Refer to the Instructions for Use on how to light the fire.
Advise the customer that they should read their Users
instructions before operating the fire and always follow
the advice in the Section headed “Cleaning your Fire”.
Advise that any smell which may be apparent on initial
lighting is quite normal and it will quickly disappear.
IMPORTANT: Advise that soft wall coverings, for
example, blown vinyl wallpaper, are easily affected by
heat, they may, therefore, scorch or become discoloured
when close to a heating appliance. This should be borne
in mind when having a heating appliance installed and
when redecorating.
Advise that to ensure the continued efficient and safe
operation of the fire it is recommended that it is checked
and serviced at regular intervals. The frequency of
servicing will depend upon the particular installation and
usage, but in general once a year should be enough.
Advise that the chimney must be checked at least once a
year and any debris found removed.
Draw attention, if applicable, to the current issue of the
Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, 35, which
imposes a duty of care on all persons who let out any
property containing a gas appliance.
It is the Law that any servicing must be carried out by a
competent person.
Reminder, leave these instructions with the user.

6 Servicing
6.1 Notes
To ensure the continued efficient and safe operation of
the fire it is recommended that it is checked and serviced
at regular intervals. The frequency of servicing will
depend upon the particular installation and usage, but in
general once a year should be enough.
It is the Law that any servicing is carried out by a
competent person.
Refer to Section 1.
Before starting make sure that the gas and electrical
supplies are turned off.
Make sure that the fire is cold before doing any servicing.
After servicing of parts always test for gas soundness
with a suitable leak detection fluid.
WARNING. Take care as the burner has a naked flame.
To test the gas control assembly apply leak detection
fluid to all joints, light the burner and check all joints for
leakage at all settings.
Carry out functional check of controls.
After removing or disconnecting any pipework always
make sure that it is refitted correctly and does not
interfere with the fitting of the fire.
Unless stated otherwise all parts are replaced in the
reverse order to removal.
6.2 Fret and Ashpit Cover
Remove Fret and Ashpit cover, see diagram 4.5 and 4.6.
6.3 Fuel Effect Bed Supports and Fuel Effect
Pieces
Following steps 1 to 8 in reverse order, remove the fuel
effect pieces and fuel effect supports, see diagram 4.4.
Care should be taken as they become fragile with use.
Clean the fuel effect pieces and the fuel effect supports
with a soft brush.
IMPORTANT: A VACUUM CLEANER MUST NOT
BE USED ON FUEL EFFECT PIECES OR FUEL
EFFECT SUPPORTS.
With the fuel effect pieces and fuel effect supports
removed, the base of the appliance may be cleaned
with a vacuum cleaner.
NOTE: The Importance of positioning the fuel effect
pieces correctly cannot be overemphasised if sooting is to
be avoided. The flame effect may also be impaired and
the life of the fuel effect pieces reduced if assembly
directions are not followed, see section 4.4.
6.4 Burner Assembly / Control Box
Disconnect the gas supply, see diagram 3.11.
Remove the burner, refer to diagram 3.1.
6.5 Burner
The burner can be cleaned in position, using a suitable
soft brush or vacuum cleaner.
Do not use a brush with wire bristles.
6.6 Injector
Disconnect the gas supply pipe union nut from the
injector. Pull the pipe down to allow easier removal,
see diagram 6.1.
Do not clean the hole with a wire or sharp instrument.

6.7 Safety Device
Refer to Section 1.
Refer to diagram 6.2.
Check the condition of the electrode and thermocouple,
clean with a soft brush.
When cleaning also make sure that all the holes in the
safety device are clear of dust and lint.
Make sure that the electrode is in line with the earth post
and that the spark gap is as shown in diagram 6.2.
6 Servicing
7.1 Fire Ignition
Remove the fret and ashpit cover, see diagram 4.5 and 4.6.
Refer to Fire Ignition Sequence of Operation, diagram 7.1.
7.2 Electrical
Important. The preliminary electrical system checks as
contained in a Multimeter instruction book are the first
checks to be carried out during a fault finding procedure.
On completion of the Service fault finding task, which has
required the breaking and remaking of electrical
connections, and checks, earth continuity, polarity and
resistance to earth must be repeated.
Isolate the fire from the electrical supply.
Remove the fret and ashpit cover, see diagram 4.5 and 4.6.
Refer to the electrical fault finding, diagram 7.2 and
functional flow, diagram 7.3.
7.3 Thermocouple
Remove the fret and ashpit cover, see diagram 4.5 and 4.6.
Refer to fault finding, diagram 7.2.
7.4 Safety Device
If the fire shuts down for no apparent reason the flue/
chimney and the air inlets into the room must be checked.
Any problems found must be put right, before the fire is
used again.
Also, check for dust and lint around the holes in the safety
device.
IN ALL cases the room must be ventilated before
attempting to relight the fire.
The safety device must not be bypassed or put out of action.
