productbetterthanthe customer.Thisincludesall safety pre-
cautions and related items. Prior to actual installation, thor-
oughly familiarize yourself with this Instruction Manual. Pay
special attention to all safety warnings. Remember, it is your
responsibility to install the product safely and to know it well
enough to be able to instruct a customer in its safe use.
Safety is a matter of common sense...a matter of thinking be-
fore acting. Most dealers have a list of specific, good safety
practices...followthem.
TheprecautionslistedinthisInstallationManual are intended
as supplemental to existing practices. However, if there is a
direct conflict between existing practices and the content of
this manual, the precautions listed here take precedence.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING HAZARD
-
Special Warning for Installation of Furnace or Air Handling Units in
Enclosed Areas such as Garages, Utility Rooms or Parking Areas
Carbon monoxide producing devices (such as an automobile, space
heater, gas water heater, etc.) should not be operated in enclosed areas
such as unventilated garages, utility rooms or parking areas because of
the danger of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning resulting from the exhaust
emissions. If a furnace or air handler is installed in an enclosed area such
as a garage, utility room or parking area and a carbon monoxide producing
device is operated therein, there must be adequate, direct outside
ventilation.
This ventilation is necessary to avoid the danger of CO poisoning which
can occur if a carbon monoxide producing device continues to operate in
the enclosed area. Carbon monoxide emissions can be (re)circulated
throughout the structure if the furnace or air handler is operating in any
mode.
CO can cause serious illness including permanent brain damage or death.

Installations and repair of this unit should be
performed by individuals meeting the
requirements of an “Entry Level Technician” as
specified by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and
Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). Attempting to install
or repair this unit without such background may
result in product damage, personal injury, or death.
ONLY
This unit should not be connected to, or used in con-
junction with, any devices that are not design certified
for use with this unit or have not been tested and
approved by Goodman. Serious property damage or
personal injury, reduced unit performance and/or
hazardous conditions may result from the use of devices
that have not been approved or certified by Goodman.
To prevent the risk of property damage, personal injury,
or death, do not store combustible materials or use
gasoline or other flammable liquids or vapors in the
vicinity of this appliance.
WARNING
Have your contractor identify all the various cutoff switches
and devices that service this unit. Know where the switch is
that will cut off energy to the heating system in the event of
overheating.
CAUTION
Shipping Inspection
Upon receiving the product, inspect it for damage from ship-
ment. Shipping damage, and subsequent investigation is the
responsibilityofthecarrier. Verify the model number, specifi-
cations, electrical characteristics, and accessories are cor-
rectpriortoinstallation.The distributor ormanufacturerwillnot
accept claims from dealers for transportation damage or in-
stallation of incorrectly shipped units.

This product is designed and manufactured to comply with
nationalcodes.Installation inaccordancewithsuch codesand/
orprevailinglocalcodes/regulationsistheresponsibilityof the
installer. Themanufacturerassumesnoresponsibilityforequip-
mentinstalled in violation of any codesorregulations.

TheUnitedStates EnvironmentalProtectionAgency (EPA)
has issued various regulations regarding the introduc-
tion and disposal of refrigerants. Failure to follow these
regulations may harm the environment and can lead to
theimpositionofsubstantial fines. Theseregulationsmay
vary by jurisdiction. A certified technician must perform
the installation and service of this product. Should you

Pre-Installation Instructions
Carefullyreadallinstructionsfortheinstallationprior to install-
ingproduct. Make sure each steporprocedureis understood
and any special considerations are taken into account before
starting installation. Assemble all tools, hardware and sup-
plies needed to complete the installation. Some items may
needtobepurchasedlocally. Make sureeverythingneededto
install the product is on hand before starting.
Beforeattemptinganyinstallation,thefollowingpointsshould
beconsidered:
• Structuralstrengthofsupportingmembers
• Clearancesandprovisionfor servicing
• Powersupplyandwiring
• Air duct connections
• Drainfacilitiesandconnections
Application Information
Theunitis designed to be installed either recessed intoawall
orhangingin a vertical “upflow” position. If units are recessed
in a wall, use the holes along the inside of the front flange to
attachunitstotheframingstuds. Theverticalairhandlercomes
equippedwithanoffset hanging bracketattachedtotherearof
thecabinetforhangingapplications.
Theairhandleralsohasabottomandfront return. Large chas-
sis installations should be installed as front return only. If
the small chassis airhandler is to be installed in a bottom re-
turn application, discard the drain access panel in the bottom
of the unit. If the airhandler is to be installed in a front return
application, remove and discard the front access panel with
insulation. The unit is shipped with a filter rack and filter. Re-
member to inspect, clean and/or replace the filter monthly.
Unitsareequippedwithbothabottomprimaryandsecondary
drain. Both drains must be trapped. Failure to install a trap
couldresultin condensationoverflowingthedrain panresulting
insubstantialwater damage to the nearby area.
Topreventpotentialsweatinganddrippingontofinishedspace,
it may be necessary to insulate the condensate drain line lo-
cated inside the building. Use Armaflex®or similar material.
NOTE: If you intend to install this unit with a “WAD” door
it must be mounted 1/4” behind front edge of stud.

Electrical Supply Wire and MOP
HIGH VOLTAGE
To avoid the risk of fire or equipment
damage, use only copper conductors.
Disconnect ALL power before servicing or
installing this unit. Multiple power sources may
be present. The electrical power to this unit
MUST be in the OFF position and all power supplies
disconnected. Failure to do so may cause property
damage, personal injury or death.
The unit MUST have an uninterrupted, unbroken
electrical ground to minimize the possibility of
personal injury if an electrical fault should occur. The
electrical ground circuit may consist of an appropri-
ately sized electrical wire connecting the ground lug
in the unit and control box wire to the building’s
electrical service panel. Other methods of grounding
are permitted if performed in accordance with the
“National Electric Code” (NEC)/”American National
Standards Institute” (ANSI)/”National Fire Protection
Association” (NFPA) 70 and local/state codes. In
Canada, electrical grounding is to be in accordance
with the Canadian Electric Code CSA C22.1. Failure
to observe this warning can result in electrical shock
that can cause personal injury or death.
Inspection of the Building Electrical Service
This unit is designed for single-phase electrical supply. DO
NOT OPERATE ON A THREE-PHASE POWER SUPPLY.
Measure the power supply to the unit. The supply voltage
must beinagreementwiththeunit nameplate power require-
ments and within the range shown in Table 1.

Wire Sizing
Wiresizeisimportanttothe operation of yourequipment. Use
the following check list when selecting the appropriate wire
size for your unit.
• Wire size must carry the Minimum Circuit Ampacity
(MCA).
• Wire size allows for no more than a 2% voltage drop
fromthebuildingbreaker/fuse panel to the unit.
Refer to the latest edition of the National Electric Code or in
CanadatheCanadian ElectricCodewhendetermining thecor-
rect wire size. The following table shows the current carrying
capabilities for copper conductors rated at 75oC with a 2%
voltagedrop. Use Table 2 to determinethevoltagedropper
footofvariousconductors.

orstatecodes for any special regional requirements.
Protection can be in the form of fusing or HACR style circuit
breakers. TheSeriesandRatingPlate canbeusedasaguide
forselectingtheMAXIMUM overcurrentdevice.
NOTE: Fuses or circuit breakers are to be sized larger than
the equipment MCA but not to exceed the MOP.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Torch heat required to braze tubes of
various sizes is proportional to the size of the tube. Tubes of
smaller size require less heat to bring the tube to brazing
temperature before adding brazing alloy. Applying too much
heattoanytubecanmeltthetube.Servicepersonnelmustuse
theappropriateheatlevelforthesizeofthetubebeingbrazed.
NOTE:Theuseofaheatshieldwhenbrazingisrecommended
toavoid burning the serial plateorthefinish on the unit. Heat
trap or wet rags should be used to protect heat sensitive
componentssuchasservicevalvesandTXVvalves.
Electrical Connections – Supply Voltage
USE COPPER CONDUCTORS ONLY.
A knockout is provided on the air handler top panel or side to
allowfortheentryofthesupplyvoltageconductors.Iftheknock-
outs on the cabinet sides are used for electrical conduit, an
adapter ring must be used in order to meet UL1995 safety
requirements. An NEC or CEC approved strain relief is to be
usedatthis entry point. The wire is to besizedinaccordance
with the “Electrical Wire and MOP” section of this manual.
Someareasrequirethesupplywiretobeenclosedinconduit.
Consult your local codes.

Special Instructions
Thisairhandlercomesequippedwithanevaporatorcoilwitha
check style flowrator assembly, an indoor blower and all nec-
essary internal electrical wiring. For most installations with
matchingapplications,nochangeto the flowrator orifice is re-
quired. However, in mix-matched applications, a flowrator
changemayberequired.SeetheGoodmanpistonkitchartor
consultyourlocaldistributorfor details regardingmix-matched
orifice sizing. If the mix-match application requires a different
piston size, change the piston in the distributor on the indoor
coil before installing the coil and follow the procedure in this
section.
The evaporator coil is shipped from the factory with
approximately 90 PSI tracer gas charge. Use caution
when relieving pressure.
WARNING
To prevent feeder tube damage, hold the distributor body
with a 3/4" open end wrench when removing or replacing
the 13/16" flare nut.
CAUTION
1. Removethevalvecoretoallowhighpressuretracergas
to escape. No gas indicates a possible leak.
2. Removethe13/16"flarenutandtailpiece.
3. Unsweat the access fitting on the tailpiece
4. Remove the check piston to verify it is correct and then
replace the piston. See piston kit chart in instructions.
5. Unsweat the cap on the suction line.
6. Slidethe13/16"flare nut over the tailpiece.
7. Braze tailpiece to the lineset liquid tube.
8. Insertthesuction line into the connection, slide the insu-
lation at least 18" away from the braze joint. Braze suc-
tion line.
9. AFTER THE TAILPIECE HAS COOLED, confirm posi-
tionofthewhite Teflon® sealandhandtightenthe13/16"
flarenut.
10. Torque the 13/16"flarenutto10-25ft-lbsortighten1/6th
turn.
Excessive torque can cause orifices to stick. Use the proper
torque settings when tightening orifices.
CAUTION
11. Replacesuction line insulation.
12. After installation, evacuationandchargingofthelowside
is complete, check fittings for leaks.
NOTE: With the piston in the distributor, the seal end should
pointinsidethedistributor body and should not be seen when
lookingintotheend of distributor. Make sure the piston is free
torotate, and move upanddown in the distributorbody.
MAINTENANCE
PeriodicCheckupandService
This unit is designed to provide many years of dependable,
trouble-freecomfortwhen properlymaintained.Propermainte-
nance will consist of annual checkups and cleaning of the in-
ternal electrical and heat transfer components by a qualified
service technician. Failure to provide periodic checkup and
cleaning can result in excessive operating cost and/or equip-
mentmalfunction.
