1 Identification Systems
To ensure that the operating procedure is working properly, the data transmission be-
tween different objects (die carrier, tools, vehicles etc.) and the control system is de-
cisive. Mobile objects have to be identified and positioned fast and safely.
Thus identification systems provide a safe and economical solution, which can be in-
stalled easily. Using these systems it is possible to operate and control the process
flow.
Such a system is suitable for nearly all sectors in which production and transportation
processes have to be automated. For the realization of these automations, data has to
be recorded, collected and processed on the route of transport, at their final destina-
tion, at the premises and at the manufacturing site.
The low-cost antenna HG 71453-A offers identification as well as positioning.
1.1 Application Examples for the Automation
Automation can be realized within the following sectors:

-Position fixing of vehicles and containers
-Production lines
-Control of material flow
-Identification of containers
-Control of loading and unloading processes
-Positioning of vehicles in industrial engineering
-Distance control of track guided vehicles
-Position fixing for public transport
Special advantages of the inductive identification system are a positioning accuracy
of up to one millimeter, identification and an insensitiveness to contamination.
1.2 System Components
In order to create a whole positioning and identification system, transponders are
needed. The antenna HG 71453-A can use the following types:

1.4 Functional Description
1.4.1 General Functional Description
When the antenna crosses a transponder it supplies it with energy by an alternating
electromagnetic field. As soon as there is enough energy available within the tran-
sponder, it starts to attenuate the magnetic field cyclically with its encoder. This atten-
uation is reflected to the antenna and generates an amplitude modulation (AM) of the
transmitting component.
Inside the receiver the signal will be regained from the AM, decoded and the data will
be put out serially via the CAN bus. The transponders HG 71325 can optionally be re-
configured with a new code by usage of the magnetic field.

1.4.2 Transmission Range and Function
The field intensity of the magnetic alternating field decreases with an increasing dis-
tance between transponders and reading antenna. Thus the information exchange is
only feasible within a certain area.
The field length L and the field width B of the transmission range (see Figure 2 on page
6) will be defined via the parallel centre line through the reading antenna (road). The
distance between reading antenna and the sectional plane is indicated as S.
A faultless function of the system is guaranteed if the transponders and the reading
antenna move towards each other with the distance specified by S and within the
range defined by L and B - provided that they are properly aligned. The transponder
(line C, max. offset) will even be detected in case of an offset (deviation from centre).
Then the positioning impulse will be output with an offset. D shows the data-free area
in which no telegrams are output. This area has a width of 25 to 30 mm at nominal
reading height.

Positioning is carried out according to the field compensation method. In the center of
the reading antenna the resulting field for the transponder will be erased. At the inter-
section to this region (registration gap or data-free range) the position of the transpon-
der at the object will be detected accurately and indicated (see table 3 on page 7).

With the transponders HG 71310, HG 71320 and HG 71325.

Initially the data are insecure and the signal strength is still small (range II). Approach-
ing further the signal becomes stronger and can be read completely. The loss of the
interception area is detected via the controller in that the thresholds are reached (3
and 4). Finally the internal interception range (range I) will be achieved.
Crossing the field border at point 4 releases the center signal. Passing the next detec-
tion ranges (5 to 8) the data are read again and will be indicated. At the field border,
point 8, no center signal will be released. The center signal will not even be set if the
vehicle stops and drives back after having passed point 1 to 4 within the interception
gap (4 and 5). The positioning signal for this transponder will only be sent again if an-
other transponder with a new code is read in the meantime or a reset is carried out via
the corresponding CAN bus command.
NOTE! If a vehicle stops before the central pulse ends and changes the
direction of travel, a wrong central pulse is generated on position
1 or 4. These positions can not be defined exactly. Thus the
identification system should only be used in installations
without any change in the direction of travel.
NOTE! Interfering signals in the areas between point 2 and 3 or 6 and 7
can lead to data errors. In this case positioning pulses are gener-
ated at the corresponding, wrong position.

2 Components and Operation
2.1 Components in the Ground (Transponders)
Transponders type HG 71325 (by Götting KG) are applied as reference markers within
the ground. The system is compatible to all transponders of type HG 713XX used so
far (depending on the installed version of the reading antenna).
By using the switchable transponder HG 71370 a simple point- to- point connection in
addition to the positioning is feasible. The transponder, e.g. installed within the ground,
signals an approaching vehicle to the system. Thus the system is able to transfer a
message to the vehicle by selecting one of 4 codes to choose from. Furthermore tran-
sponder version HG 71370-W is able to change the positioning mode.
The transponder code provides 16 Bit serially or parallel.
2.2 Identifying Antenna HG 71453-A (CAN open®)
The antenna system is in a 53 x 31 x 156.5 mm casing (polycarbonate). The antenna
is connected by 5-pole cables. The terminal connector is an M12 circular connector
(see Figure 4). As accessory elbow jacks with different cable lengths (standard 2 m)
and terminating resistors are available.

2.2.2 LEDs

2.2.3 Turn-on Characteristics
Once power is supplied the positioning output is active as long as a reset is carried
out (approximately 500 ms). Additionally all LEDS, except for the BUS-LED, will be
turned on for 500 ms each in order to test their function. After approximately 2 s the
device is ready for operation.
2.2.4 General Information
The code supplied by the transponder has a sequence of 24 bits, 16 bits are encoded.
The serial interface is only used for the monitor programme as described in section 4.2
on page 24. For this antenna the data as well as one status byte will be output via the
CAN bus. The programming of transponders can also be performed via the CAN bus.
2.2.5 Data Interface CANopen®
The node ID and the transmission rate have to be set either with the help of the serial
monitor or the corresponding SDOs. The measured values of the system (code and
status) are transmitted via a so-called TxPDO. SDOs or the serial monitor are used for
parameter setting. The CAN identifiers are derived from the node address (1..127).
2.2.5.1 Description of the Process Data Objects (PDO)
Fixed places are allocated for the measured values. Dynamical mapping is not possi-
ble. PDO_1 is transmitted as a combination of the Identifier 0x180 and the node ad-
dress. It is either sent cyclically (event time > 10 ms) or only when the measured
values have changed (inhibit time > 10 ms). In order to avoid excessive bus usage, it
is possible to set the so-called Inhibit time within the CAN menu of the serial mon-
itor or with an SDO. PDO_1 consists of exactly 3 bytes containing of 16 bit transponder
code and the status. The latter is equal to the status as shown in the monitor program.
Please refer to Table 6 and Table 7 for an explanation of what these values mean.

It is also possible to permanently deactivate a TxPDO by selecting the asynchronous
mode (255) with inhibit time = 0 and Event_time = 0, then store the parameters. In ad-
dition, it is possible to temporarily deactivate/activate the TxPDO by setting/deleting
the highest ranking bit within the corresponding PDO COB Identifier [1800,01].
The description of the status bits is shown in the following table:
2.2.5.2 Heartbeat
The heartbeat mode is supported. Whenever a heartbeat time > 0 is set in the CAN
menu, the device status is transmitted under identifier (0x700 + node address) every
time the heartbeat timer has expired.

2.2.5.3 Description of the Service Data Objects (SDOs)
The service data object is used to access to the object index. An SDO is always trans-
mitted with a confirmation, i. e. each reception of the message is acknowledged. The
identifiers for read and write access are:
Read access: 0x600 + node address,
Write access: 0x580 + node address.
The SDO telegrams are described in the CiA®standard DS-301. The error codes in
case of faulty communication are listed in the following table:
2.2.5.4 Object Directory
All objects relevant for the device are included in the CANopen® Object Directory.
Each entry is indicated by a 16 bit index. Sub-components are indicated by a 8 bit sub
index. RO indicates read only entries. The object index is subdivided into the following
areas:

By writing the signature ’save’ or the backwards form ’evas’ in ASCII Code (hex-Code:
0x65766173) onto subindex 1, the currently set parameters are permanently saved. A
successful recording procedure is acknowledged after about 120 ms by a TxSDO (1st
Byte = 0x60). The saving process is performed after that acknowledgement. During
that process CAN telegrams can not be received or transmitted.
By writing the signature ’load’ or the backwards form ’daol’ in ASCII Code (hex-Code:
0x64616F6C) onto subindex 1, the corresponding default parameters are loaded. A
reset should be carried out to make the antenna use them.
In case of ’Restore All’, the Node ID is also set to 1 and the baud rate to 125 Kbaud.
In order to deactivate this function set the Producer Heartbeat Time to 0.

By setting sub index 1 to a 16 bit code this code will be programmed into a transpon-
der within the range of reception.
By writing the signature "c" in ASCII code (hex code: 0x63) to sub index 2 the last
stored transponder code is „deleted“. Afterwards a transponder with the same code
can again generate a positioning pulse.

2.2.6 Node Address
Two hex turn-switches protected by seal plugs can be used to adjust the CANopen®
address (please refer to Figure 4 on page 8). Open the seal plugs, then use a screw-
driver to set the address in the range from 01 to 7F. Close the seal plugs afterwards.
In order to use the new address the antenna has to be switched off and turned on
again.
2.2.7 RS 232 - Interface
For this interface the transmission parameters are fixed: 38400, 8 data bit, even parity,
continuous output, ASCII-coded. Transponders can be programmed via the serial in-
terface (see section 4.2 on page 24).
So long as sufficient power voltage is supplied the following data will be output once
a transponder code is read (using a 5 ms pattern).

The data is output ASCII coded, the data sets are separated by a comma. Data lines

2.2.8 Positioning Pulse
The positioning pulse is triggered as soon as the center of the antenna is crossed. It‘s
duration is 100 ms. Once this pulse is triggered the corresponding output is switched
to 24 V with a current limitation of 20 mA. Please refer to chapter 1.4.3 „Signals and
Timing“ on page 7 for the timing of the Positioning Pulse.

3 Mounting and Setup
3.1 Testing a Transponder
It is possible to test the transponders with a reading antenna and a connected PC (see
section 4.2 on page 24).

Range and positioning accuracy will be influenced by
-Metal parts lying on the ground (sheet metals)
-Reinforcement laid close to the transponder
-Induction loops, e.g. formed by structural steel
NOTE! Individual metal rods have only little influence and may hurt the
metalfree area partially (see figure Figure 5 on page 19).
There is no influence on the positioning accuracy caused by
-Environmental influences as snow, ice and water
-Contaminations as oil, tar etc.
Please pay attention to the following mounting instructions for tran-
sponder HG 71325
-Keep a minimum distance of 500 mm between the transponders.
-Keep a minimum distance to metal parts (see figure Figure 5 on page 19). The
influence on positioning accuracy and range depends on the size and the range
of the metal parts.
-The minimum distance between conductors with a diameter smaller than 6 mm
has to be 2 mm.

-To protect the transponder use either a covering cap or apply an epoxy resin layer
(thickness approximately 1 cm). The drill hole mouth should be wide enough so
that the cover cannot press on the transponder.
Which end of the transponder is turned upwards is insignificant for the range or the
function.
3.2.1 Mounting in very solid Ground (e. g. concrete)
-No additional protective casing necessary.
-Upright alignment required (otherwise a position error will be generated).
-Mould the transponder (e.g. with a two component epoxy resin).
3.2.2 Mounting in Tough Material (e. g. tar)
-Protection tube necessary (e. g. made of fiber-reinforced plastic material).
Choose the diameter accordingly to the maximum the load.
-Arrange the transponders upright (otherwise a position error will occur) in foamed
material.
3.3 Reading Antenna

To achieve a maximum range (> 50 mm) of the reading distance, it is recommended
to mount a 10 mm plastic plate or a 10 mm distance bolt between the steel or alumin-
ium rack and the reading antenna. When using distance bolts a sufficiently large shim
has to be placed under the reading antenna‘s casing.
NOTE! If several antennas are used within one installation they have to
be mounted with a minimum distance of 1500 mm between
each other.
