CARE AND SAFETY______________________________
To ensure that this device provides you with long-term satisfaction and
enjoyment, please observe the following instructions.
This device is designed for the recording and playback of audio signals.
Any other use is expressly prohibited.
Protect the device, the CDs and cassettes from rain, moisture (dripping or
splashing water), sand and heat. Do not leave it next to heaters or inside
parked cars in the sun.
Make sure there is adequate ventilation when positioning the device. There
must be a free space of at least 10 cm behind the device. Do no place objec-
ts on the ventilation slots.
Do not insert any foreign bodies in the CD or tape compartment of the
device.
Bringing the device in from the cold can cause condensation on the CD lens,
which prevents it from playing. Give the device time to warm up.
If the device is unable to scan CDs perfectly, use a standard, commercially
available cleaning CD to clean the laser optics. Other cleaning methods may
damage the laser optics.
Always keep the CD compartment closed to prevent dust from collecting on
the laser optics. Do not attach adhesive labels to CDs. Keep the surfaces of
CDs clean.
The CD and tape units contain self-lubricating bearings, which must not be
oiled or greased.
Never open the device casing under any circumstances. The manufacturer
will not accept any liability for damage resulting from improper handling.
Thunderstorms are a danger to all electrical devices. Even if the device is
switched off, it can be damaged by a lightning strike to the mains. Always
remove the mains plug during an electrical storm.
Do not use any cleaning agent, as this may damage the casing. Clean the
device with a clean, moist leather cloth.
Please note when deciding where to put the device that furniture surfaces are
covered by various types of lacquer and plastic, most of which contain che-
mical additives. These may cause corrosion to the feet of the device, thus
resulting in stains on the surface of the furniture which can be difficult or
impossible to remove.
You will find a symbol similar to the one shown here on the bottom of the
device.
CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT means that the laser is designed in such a way
as to ensure that the maximum permissible emission value cannot be
exceeded under any circumstances.
If operating devices or methods other than those specified here are
employed, it may lead to dangerous exposure to emissions.
Invisible laser radiation is emitted if the CD compartment is opened and the
safety locking mechanism is shorted. Do not expose yourself to this radia-
tion.

General
CD•TAPE/OFF• Switches between the CD, TAPE and RADIO
RADIO input sources (the device is switched off when the
switch is set to »TAPE/OFF« and none of the
drive buttons are pressed).
UBS Ultra Bass System for boosting the bass.
VOLUME Adjusts the volume.
yHeadphone jack for connecting a headphone set
with a jack plug (ø 3.5 mm) on the left side of the
device.
This automatically switches off the loudspeakers.
AC~ Socket for connecting the power cord.
Radio unit
ITelescopic antenna for FM reception.
FM 88-108 MHz Tuning scale for the frequency bands FM and
MW 540-1600 kHz MW and LW.

TRACK 08 Indicates the number of tracks on the CD

Mains operation
Note:
Check that the mains voltage on the type plate (on the bottom of the
device) corresponds to your local mains supply.
If this is not the case, contact your specialist dealer.
1Insert the mains cable supply (in the battery compartment) in the
»AC ~« socket of the radio recorder.
2Insert the power cord plug in the socket.
Caution:
The only way to disconnect the device from the mains supply is to pull
out the plug.
Battery operation
1Open the battery compartment by pressing the snap-catch, and remove
the lid.
2Insert six batteries (6 x 1,5 V/type IEC/LR20/AM1/D-size), observe the
polarity marked on the base of the battery compartment.
Note:
Remove the batteries when they are flat or when you know that the devi-
ce will not be used for a long period of time.
No liability is accepted for damage resulting from leaking batteries.
The batteries are switched off during mains operation.
Environmental note:
Batteries, including those which contain no heavy metal, must not be
disposed of with household waste. Please dispose of used batteries in an
environmentally sound manner. Observe the legal regulations which
apply in your area.

POWER SUPPLY _______________________________
Additional information for units sold in the UK.
Units sold in the UK are suitable for operation from a 240V ac, 50Hz mains
supply.
The range of multi-system receivers is built to work in most European coun-
tries. However, the mains plug and socket system for the UK differs from
many European countries.
This appliance has been supplied with a fitted, non-removable, approved
converter plug for use in the UK. This converter plug is fitted with a 5A rated
fuse.
In case this appliance is supplied with a moulded 2-pin Euro plug only,
which is unsuitable for UK operation, this must be cut off and immediately
disposed of. An approved 13A, 3-pin UK plug should then be fitted by a
qualified electrician.
Note:
The severed Euro plug must be destroyed to avoid a possible shock
hazard should it be inserted into a socket elsewhere.
If a non-rewireable 3-pin plug or a rewireable 13A (BS1363) 3-pin plug is
used, it must be fitted with a 5A ASTA or BSI approved BS1362 fuse. If any
other type of plug is used it must be protected by a 5A fuse either in the
plug, or at the distribution board. If this type of plug becomes defective,
ensure that the fuse is removed before disposal, to eliminate potential shock
hazard.
If it is necessary to change the fuse in the non-rewireable plug, the correct
type and rating (5A ASTA or BSI approved BS1362) must be used and the
fuse cover must be refitted. If the fuse cover is lost or damaged, the lead and
plug must not be used until a replacement is obtained. Replacement fuse
covers should be obtained from your dealer.
Important:
The wires in the mains lead are colour coded in accordance with the follo-
wing code:
BLUE – NEUTRAL
BROWN – LIVE
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of your appliance may not cor-
respond with the coloured marking identifying terminals in your plug, pro-
ceed as follows:
Connect the BLUE coloured wire to plug terminal marked with the letter “N”
or coloured black.
Connect the BROWN coloured wire to the plug terminal marked with the let-
ter “L” or coloured red.
In no circumstance must any of the wires be connected to the terminal mar-
ked with the letter “E”, earth symbol “z”, coloured green, or green & yel-
low.

Adjusting the volume
1Adjust the volume with the » VOLUME« control.
Activating the Ultra Bass System
This function boosts the bass frequencies.
1Switch the Ultra Bass System on or off with »UBS«.
Listening with headphones
1 Connect the headphones to the headphones socket » y « (on the left of the
device) (ø 3,5 mm).
– This automatically switches off the loudspeakers.
Note:
Prolonged listening at loud volumes on headphones can damage your
hearing.

Antennas
1For FM (VHF) stations, extend the telescopic antenna and then tilt and
turn it to achieve the best reception.
Note:
If the FM signal is too strong, it is advisable to push in the telescopic
antenna.
In case of poor reception:
If your FM stereo reception is impaired by interference caused by insuf-
ficient signal strength, this can sometimes be rectified by setting the
»FM MODE« switch on the back on the device to mono reception. The
FM stereo display goes out and the FM station is played in mono.
2The Radio Recorder has a built-in rod antenna for MW/LW reception.
Turn the radio recorder about its own axis to point the antenna.
Radio reception
1Switch on the Radio Recorder by setting the »CD•TAPE/OFF•
RADIO« switch to »RADIO«.
– The »ON •« indicator lights up.
2Select the frequency band (FM, MW or LW) using the band selection
switch.
3Set the radio station using the »TUNING« knob.
– If a programme is received in FM stereo the »FM STEREO« display
lights up.
4Switch off the Radio Recorder by setting the function switch to the »TAPE«
position.
– The »ON •« indicator disappears.

General instructions for laser devices
You will find a symbol similar to the one shown here on the bottom of the

ed, it may lead to dangerous exposure to emissions. Invisible laser radiation
is emitted if the CD compartment is opened and the safety locking mecha-
nism is shorted. Do not expose yourself to this radiation.
The device is suitable for music CDs displaying the logo shown here (CD-
DA) and for CD-Rs and CD-RWs with audio data.
When burning audio files onto CD-R and CD-RWs, various problems may
arise which may lead to interference in playback. Causes for this can be faulty
software and hardware settings or even the CD itself. Should you encounter
such problems, contact the customer services of your CD burner/software
manufacturer or search for information about this in the Internet.
When you make audio CDs observe all legal guidelines and ensure that the
copyrights of third parties are not violated.
Preparation
1Switch on the Radio Recorder by setting the »CD•TAPE/OFF•
RADIO« switch to »CD«.
– The»ON •« display lights up. If no CD has been inserted then »00«
will appear in the display followed by »no«.
2Open the CD compartment with »OPEN/CLOSE« (on the top side of
the Radio Recorder).
3Insert a CD in the compartment with its label facing upwards.
4Close the lid of the CD compartment (marked »OPEN/CLOSE«) (dis-
play initially shows »00«).
The CD player starts up and scans the index of the CD.
– The total number of tracks appears in the display.
CD playback
1Start playback with » ıII PLAY/PAUSE«.
– The » PLAY/PAUSE •« indicator lights up.
– The display shows the number of the first track.
– Playback stops automatically at the end of the CD.
2Pause playback with » ıII PLAY/PAUSE«.
– » PLAY/PAUSE •« flashes.
3Continue playback with » ıII PLAY/PAUSE«.
4End playback with »■ STOP«.
– » PLAY/PAUSE •« disappears.

Selecting a different track
1During playback press »9F-SKIP« or »8R-SKIP« as often as
necessary until the number of the desired track appears in the display.
– Playback of the selected track starts automatically.
Searching for a passage within a track
1During playback press and hold down »9F-SKIP« or »8R-SKIP«
until you have found the required passage.
– If »9F-SKIP« or »8R-SKIP« are let go, playback begins again.
Note:
During the search the volume is reduced.
Calling up the REPEAT functions
The repeat functions enable you to repeat a single track or the whole CD.
1To repeat a track press »REPEAT« once.
– The »REPEAT •« indicator lights up and the current track is conti-
nuously repeated.
2To repeat all tracks on the CD, press »REPEAT« again.
– The »REPEAT •« indicator starts flashing and the CD is repeated
continuously.
3To end this function, press »REPEAT« several times until the »REPEAT •«
display goes out.
Creating a track memory
This function enables you to store up to 20 tracks on the current CD in a cer-
tain order and then play them back in that sequence. The same track may be
stored more than once.
Selecting and storing tracks
1Place a CD in the CD compartment.
– The total number of tracks appears in the display.
Note:
The function switch must be set to »CD«.
2Press »PROG.«.
– Display: »01«, »PROG •« flashes.
3Select the required tracks with »9F-SKIP« or »8R-SKIP«.
– The selected track number flashes in the display and »PROG •«
lights up.
4Press »PROG.« to store the track.
– Display: »02« (next track to be stored), »PROG •« flashes.
5To store more tracks, repeat steps 3 and 4.
Note:
If more than 20 tracks are stored, the process starts from the beginning
with track 1. The device overwrites the previous program.

Changing from normal playback to the track memory
1End normal playback with »■ STOP«.
– The total number of CD tracks appears in the display.
2Press » PROG.«.
– Preset position 1 (»01«), »PROG •« flashes in display.
3Start playback of the track memory with » ıII PLAY/PAUSE«.
Adding tracks
1After stopping playback, continue pressing »PROG.« until the display
shows the first free memory position (the highest number).
2Add the new track as described in the section ”Selecting and storing
tracks”.
– The new track is stored after the current sequence.
Replacing tracks
1Continue pressing »PROG.« until the display shows the track in the
memory which you want to replace.
2Select and store the new track as described in the section ”Selecting and
storing tracks”.
Deleting the track memory
The track memory is deleted if:
– »PROG.« and then »■ STOP« are pressed.
– The CD compartment is opened.
– The Radio Recorder is switched off using the »CD•TAPE/OFF•
RADIO« switch, or the power supply is interrupted.

Preparation
1Switch on the Radio Recorder by setting the »CD•TAPE/OFF•
RADIO« switch to »TAPE«.
2Open the tape compartment with »■/ə«.
3Insert a cassette in the compartment with the tape side facing down-
wards and the full reel on the left (see »TAPE DIRECTION«).
4Close the tape compartment by carefully pressing the front of the tape
compartment »CLOSE«.
Tape playback
1Press »ı« to start playback.
– The »ON •« indicator lights up.
– Playback stops at the end of the side of the tape.
2Press »II« on the device to pause playback.
Press »II« to resume playback.
3End playback by pressing »■ STOP«.
4Open the tape compartment, press »■/ə« again and take out the tape.
Note:
The device is switched off when no button on the cassette unit is pressed.
Fast forward/rewinding the tape
1With the tape stopped, press »3« or »4«.
– »3« fast forwards to the end of the tape, »4« rewinds to the
beginning of the tape.
2Press »■/ə« when you reach the desired position on the tape.
Tape recording
Erase protection
Every new recording overwrites the existing recording on the tape.
You can protect your own tapes against accidental erasure by breaking the
safety tabs on the top of the tape.
Pre-recorded commercial music tapes are already protected against acci-
dental erasure.
If you want to record onto a protected tape, cover the opening with adhesive
tape.
Note:
Only use NORMAL-type cassettes (IEC I) for recording.
CHROME (IEC II) or METAL (IEC IV) tapes are not suitable. The volume
setting and the position of the Ultra Bass System switch do not affect the
recording level.

Recording from the radio
1Place a cassette with the protection tabs intact in the tape compartment
and use »3« or »4« to find the correct position on the tape.
2Set the »CD•TAPE/OFF•RADIO« switch to »RADIO« and tune in to
the desired radio station.

– The »ı« button is automatically engaged.
– The device automatically stops recording at the end of the tape.
4Press »II« to pause recording.

5Interrupt playback by pressing »■/ə«.
Recording from a CD
1Place a cassette with the protection tabs intact in the tape compartment
and use »3« or »4« to find the correct position on the tape.
2Set the »CD•TAPE/OFF•RADIO« switch to »CD«.
3To start recording in the middle of a track, start the CD playback as
usual.
4Once you have reached the desired passage, press »ıII PLAY/
PAUSE«.
5To start recording, press »●●«.
– The CD player starts automatically from the pause mode.
CD synchro recording
1Place a cassette with the protection tabs intact in the tape compartment
and use »3« or »4« to find the correct position on the tape.
2Set the »CD•TAPE/OFF•RADIO« switch to »CD«.
3Press »●●« to start recording.
– The »ı« button engages automatically and CD playback is started
automatically from the beginning of the CD.
– If you wish to record a selected track memory, press »PROG.« and
then »●●«. Playback of the CD starts automatically at the beginning of
the track.
– The device automatically stops recording at the end of the cassette.

Cleaning the tape drive
To guarantee good recording and playback quality, clean the parts shown
(1, 2, 3) after every 50 hours of use, or once a month.
Open the tape compartment, moisten a cotton swab with alcohol or a speci-
al head-cleaning fluid and clean the idler (3), the capstan (2) and the
magnetic heads (1). Close the cassette compartment. You can also play a
cleaning cassette to clean the magnetic heads (1).
Protect your cassettes from humidity, dust, heat and cold.
Do not store your tapes near devices with strong magnetic fields such as tele-
visions and loudpeakers.
After using a cassette, put it back in its protective case.
