1. INTRO
In 1865, the Guinand company was founded in Switzerland.
Since this time, we have been continuously manufacturing
high-quality mechanical watches. Our customers have always
been professional users from the navy and aviation industries
who have to be able to rely on our watches in the air, on the
water and on the land. In the 1960s, Guinand commenced its
cooperation with Frankfurt-based watch pioneer Helmut Sinn –
many of the watches sold under his name were manufactured
by Guinand. In the mid-1990s, Helmut Sinn took over the shares
of Guinand S.A. from the Guinand family, and moved Guinand
to Frankfurt am Main. Since this time, Guinand has been a
German watch brand with Swiss roots. Our watches combine
the tradition of Swiss watch crasmanship with the design
principles of German pilot watches. Precision mechanics meet
functional design.

3. WINDING
Winding the watch (crown position I)
The watch features a screwed crown (crown position 0). You
loosen the crown by turning it anti-clockwise. You wind the
movement by turning the crown clockwise. Normally, about
40 crown rotations are enough to do this. For a non-screwed
crown there is no crown position 0.
Worn daily, the watch’s automatic (for automatic movements) is
then self-winding under normal conditions. The power reserve
enables you to take o the watch overnight without having
to rewind it. For manual winding movements daily winding is
recommended, ideally always at the same time each day.
4. SETTING
You can stop the movement in crown position III. This helps to
set the watch right down to the second. To make sure that the
date changes at midnight instead of midday, turn the hands
forwards until the date changes once. Then set the time.

We recommend turning the hands past the desired minute
position and then setting the watch by turning them back. The
movement is activated once the watch is no longer at crown
position III.
Fast correction of the date (crown position II)
Please do not perform this correction between 10:00 pm and
2:00 am! Turn the crown to position II, and turn it clockwise
until the current date appears in the date window. Please do
not use the date setting between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am. During
this time the gear wheels to change the date can be found in
the depthing. Consequently, the movement could be damaged.

Alternative for watches with weekday display
Fast correction of the date and weekday (crown position II)
Please do not perform this correction between 10:00 pm and
2:00 am! The crown position II is used for fast correction of
the date and weekday. To change the date, turn the crown to
position II, and turn it clockwise until the current date appears
in the date window.
To change the weekday, turn the crown anti-clockwise until the
current weekday appears in the weekday window. Please do
not use this setting between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am. During this
time the gear wheels to change the weekday can be found in the
depthing. Consequently, the movement could be damaged.
Please carefully retighten the crown aer the corrections.

5. CHRONOGRAPH TIME MEASUREMENT
The chronograph (stopwatch function) is operated with the two
pushers “A” and “B”. Pusher “A” begins the measurement when
you first push it. When you push it a second time, this stops the
measurement. When you push pusher “A” again, this continues
the measurement. This enables you to add up times. Pusher “B”
resets the stopwatch.
6. LEFT-HANDED WATCHES
Please note that with le-handed watches, i.e. models where
the pusher and crown are on the le side of the case, the
stopwatch and wind/date and weekday setting functions are
on the opposite side.

7. FUNCTIONS
Rotating bezel
The aluminium pilot bezel of a Guinand watch can be rotated in
both directions. Pilots who operate aircra under Visual Flight
Rules can use the additional minute scale as a navigation aid:
on take-o the minute hand is set with the flyback function
(permanent zero setting) so that the bezel counts the flight
minutes. If, for example, the planned route includes certain
landmarks aer 15 minutes of change of direction, you can
watch on the bezel when it is time to keep a lookout for the
respective landmark. A chronograph cannot eectively perform
this function as the mostly small minute totaliser is much harder
to read than the central hand of a pilot watch. This stopwatch
function of up to 60 minutes also makes sense for non-aviation
applications, and two things can be timed parallel to each other
with the use of the chronograph mechanism.

Tachymeter (tachometer)
You can use the tachymeter scale to directly read average
speeds between 60 (37 mph) and several hundred kmph. To
define the average speed with the tachymeter scale, first use
the chronograph to measure the time it takes to travel 1 km
(0.6 miles). The value displayed by the central stop-second
hand on the tachymeter scale provides the distance that you
travel in 1 hour. (Example: 30 seconds is 120 kmph/74.6mph)
8. WATER RESISTANCE
To ensure the water resistance lasts as long as possible, you
should rinse the watch if it comes into contact with seawater,
chemicals or similar substances. The watch is resistant to high
mechanical stress and is shock proof. At the same time, however,
constant mechanical stress such as impacts and vibrations
increases its wear and tear. Consequently, you should protect
the watch from unnecessary stress. It takes about eight weeks
of operation until a definite statement can be made about the

watch’s accuracy as the mechanism is wearing in during this
time, and in addition each person has dierent wearing habits.
To protect the movement from moisture, please make sure that
the winding crown is always completely pushed against the case
flank, and is also completely screwed in if there is a screwed
crown. Water or moisture damage resulting from improper use
of the watch shall not be covered by the purchase guarantee. If
you wear your watch for water sports or other activities in which
it is frequently exposed to water and moisture, you should
have an annual inspection performed on your watch’s water
resistance.
Condensation under your watch’s crystal is a sign that your
watch is no longer water resistant. In this case, please contact
Guinand customer service as soon as possible.

9. TIPS
Accuracy
Our watchmakers adjust mechanical watches for accuracy
between about 0/+10 seconds per day. The accuracy is highly
dependent on the individual habits of the wearer and can thus
vary. Please contact Guinand customer service to have your
watch adjusted.
Magnetism
Do not expose your watch to any strong magnetic fields. This
could cause your watch to stop or run fast. However, magnetism
does not typically cause any lasting or irreversible damage to
the movement. In most cases, it is enough to demagnetise the
timepiece to restore its normal speed.
If you notice that your watch may have stopped or is running
fast, it could have been accidentally magnetised. In this case,
bring it to Guinand so we can demagnetise it.

Chemicals
Wherever possible, avoid direct contact with products such
as lubricants or industrial and household detergents such as
cosmetics and perfumes. These could damage the seals and
change the appearance of the straps and case.
Temperature
Do not expose your watch to any extreme temperatures (above
60 °C/140 °F or below 0 °C/32 °F). This could impair the liquidity/
viscosity of the lubricants. Extreme temperature fluctuations
cause watches to react with accuracy fluctuations. Wherever
possible, avoid this.
Impacts in conjunction with some sports and at work:
We recommend you not wear your watch for sports such as
tennis, golf or mountain biking to protect the watch from
impacts that could damage the movement. Strong vibrations
and impacts can also occur during the use of drills, rotary
hammer drills or grinders. We recommend you not wear your
watch when working with these machines.

10. CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Cleaning the case
You can clean a water resistant model with a damp cloth. Please
make sure you use a so and clean cloth to avoid scratches on
the case. Gaps can be cleaned with a cotton bud if necessary.
Please avoid aggressive cleaning, polishing or scouring agents.
It is possible that a watch that is no longer water resistant will
display this when you immerse it in water and/or clean it with
washing-up liquid, etc.
Maintenance intervals
To ensure that your Guinand watch maintains its expected
precision even aer decades of use, like all fine mechanisms, it
needs a minimum of care. Consequently, we recommend that
every four to five years you take your watch to be professionally
serviced by Guinand/Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Even if
you do not constantly wear your Guinand watch, the oils and
lubricants used can evaporate or lose some of their lubrication

properties. In this case, this could impair the accuracy of the
watch. That is why we recommend having your watch regularly
serviced every four to five years.
Care of the straps
LEATHER STRAP
The durability of leather straps depends on how oen they
are worn and under what conditions. To ensure you can enjoy
your leather strap for as long as possible, we recommend you
avoid contact with water, oily or acidic substances or cosmetics.
Furthermore, you should not expose the strap to UV rays for a
long period of time. Otherwise, this could change the colour of
the strap. We advise against the use of leather care products
for cleaning or polishing a leather strap. As a leather strap is
exposed to more external friction in summer, we recommend
temporarily replacing it with a rubber strap or a metal strap if
one is available to match your watch model.

Important: If you want to switch out a strap, we recommend you
contact an expert with experience in this. Improperly switched
out straps can become loose during use, which may result in
your watch falling o or you losing it. Every time the strap is
switched out, you should always switch out the spring bars for
new, high-quality spring bars that match your watch model.
RUBBER STRAP
The durability of a rubber strap depends on how and how oen
it is worn. To ensure you can enjoy your rubber strap for as
long as possible, we recommend you avoid contact with oily
or acidic substances or cosmetics. Furthermore, you should not
expose the strap to heat or UV rays for a long period of time.
Particularly UV rays can impair the condition of the material.
A natural rubber strap can be kept in a good condition if it is
simply washed with soapy water and then rinsed with so (not
hard) water.

STAINLESS STEEL STRAP
With the exception of an occasionally light brushing (ideally
at the end of the summer), a metal strap does not need any
particular care. Use a so brush (e.g. a so toothbrush) to
remove all dust particles and grains of sand that may be found
in the links of the strap.
