Introduction
This document provides Ethernet interface configuration examples.
Prerequisites
The configuration examples in this document were created and verified in a lab environment, and all
the devices were started with the factory default configuration. When you are working on a live
network, make sure you understand the potential impact of every command on your network.
This document assumes that you have basic knowledge of Ethernet interfaces.
Example: Configuring Ethernet interfaces
Network requirements
As shown in Figure 1:
•Due to the restrictions of Server 1's network adapter, interface GigabitEthernet 3/0/2 can only
negotiate the half duplex mode. The rate of the other servers’ network adapters is 1000 Mbps.
•The rate of interface GigabitEthernet 3/0/1 is 1000 Mbps.
Configure interfaces GigabitEthernet 3/0/2 through GigabitEthernet 3/0/4 to autonegotiate their
transmission rate to avoid congestion on interface GigabitEthernet 3/0/1.
Manually configure the interface connecting the switch to Server 1 to operate in full duplex mode.
Figure 1 Network diagram
Requirements analysis
If you do not specify the speed options for autonegotiation, the transmission rate of GigabitEthernet
3/0/2, GigabitEthernet 3/0/3, and GigabitEthernet 3/0/4 negotiated with the servers is 1000

Mbps, which might cause congestion on the outgoing interface GigabitEthernet 3/0/1. To solve this
problem, you can manually set the rate to 100 Mbps for GigabitEthernet 3/0/2, GigabitEthernet
3/0/3, and GigabitEthernet 3/0/4.
Because interface GigabitEthernet 3/0/2 can only negotiate the half duplex mode, you must
configure the interface to operate in full duplex mode.
Software version used
This configuration example was created and verified on S12500-CMW520-R1825P01.
Configuration restrictions and guidelines
When you configure Ethernet interfaces, follow these restrictions and guidelines:
•By default, copper GE interfaces autonegotiate their duplex mode.
•The half duplex mode cannot be configured for Ethernet interfaces.
•For interfaces to operate correctly, H3C recommends using the same rate and duplex mode
settings for interfaces at both ends of a link.
Configuration procedures
# Set the rate to 100 Mbps for interface GigabitEthernet 3/0/2, and configure the interface to
operate in full duplex mode.
