The propeller is among the most reliable components of your
airplane. It is also among the most critical to flight safety. It
thereforedeservesthecareandmaintenancecalled for in this
Manual. Please give it your attention, especially the section
dealingwith Inspections and Checks.

WARNING
People who fly should recognize that various types of risks
areinvolved;andthey shouldtakeallprecautionsto
minimize them, since they cannot be eliminated entirely.
Thepropellerisavitalcomponentoftheaircraft.A
mechanicalfailureofthepropellercouldcauseaforced
landingorcreatevibrationssufficientlyseveretodamage
the aircraft, possibly causing it to become uncontrollable.
Propellersaresubjecttoconstantvibrationstressesfrom
theengineandairstream,whichareaddedtohighbending
andcentrifugalstresses.
Beforeapropelleris certified as being safe to operate on an
airplane,anadequate marginofsafetymustbe
demonstrated.Eventhougheveryprecautionistakeninthe
designandmanufactureofapropeller,historyhasrevealed
rareinstancesoffailures, particularly of the fatigue type.
It is essential that the propeller is properly maintained
accordingtotherecommendedserviceproceduresanda
close watch is exercised to detect impending problems
beforethey become serious. Anygrease or oil leakage,
lossofairpressure,unusualvibration,orunusualoperation
shouldbe investigated and repaired, as itcouldbe a
warningthatsomething seriousiswrong.

greaterlevelofvigilanceisrequiredinthemaintenanceand
inspectionofthepropeller.Experimentalinstallationsoften
usepropeller-enginecombinationsthathavenotbeen
tested and approved. In these cases, the stress on the
propellerand,therefore,itssafetymarginisunknown.
Failurecouldbe assevereaslossof propellerorpropeller
blades and cause loss of propeller control and/or loss of
aircraftcontrol.
HartzellPropellerInc.followsFAAregulationsforpropeller
certificationoncertificatedaircraft.Experimentalaircraft
mayoperatewithunapprovedenginesorpropellersor
enginemodificationstoincreasehorsepower,suchas
unapprovedcrankshaftdamperconfigurationsorhigh
compressionpistons.Theseissuesaffectthevibration
outputof the engine and the stresslevelson the propeller.
Significantpropellerlifereductionandfailurearereal
possibilities.
Frequentinspectionsarestronglyrecommendedif
operatingwithanon-certificatedinstallation;however,these
inspectionsmay not guarantee propellerreliability,as a
failingdevicemaybehidden fromtheview oftheinspector.
Propelleroverhaulisstronglyrecommendedtoaccomplish
periodicinternalinspection.
Visually inspect metal blades for cracks. Inspect hubs,
with particular emphasis on each blade arm for cracks.
Eddycurrentequipmentisrecommendedforhub
inspection, since cracks are usually not apparent.
