THE QUICK STACKING WORD GAME
For 2 to 4 Players 1 AGES 8+
You andyour opponentsscore pointsbyspellingwordswith stackable
lettertilesonthespecialgameboard.You buildwords byblayingletters
acrossor downonthe boardandbystackinglettersontopofletters
alreadyonthe boardtoform differentwords.It'sthis3dimensional
gameplaythat makes UPWORDS so unique.
You score pointsfor eachletterinyour wordandevery lettertile under
eachletterofyourword.Letters can bestackedfivetiles highso your score
can reallyaddupfast. Buildwords, stack letters,score highandhavefun!

passestothe left.Returnthetiles, letter-sidedown,tothe draw pile

BASIC TURN
Onyourturn, playoneor morelettertiles,
eithertoformanewwordthat connectsto
aword alreadyonthe board,ortochangea
word already onthe boardtoadifferentword.All lettersplayedonyour
turn mustbeinthe same rowofgamesquareseitheracrossor down.
Tally andannounceyour pointscore,then draw lettertiles from the
draw piletoreplacetheonesyou played.

5. HOW TO FORM WORDS:
Figures 2 through 7 show a
sequenceof plays.Arrows
pointoutthewordor words
formedoneach play.Point
scores are givenfor each
example.

You can playletterstoform a
wordthat reads across (from
leftto rightonly)or downthe
gameboard(neverdiagonally
or up)andconnectstoaword
alreadyontheboard.For

Stacking Letters: You can
stack lettersontopofletters

than oneletteronthesame stack
duringoneturn.You cannotstack
aletteronthesame letter

Plurals:You cannotsimplyaddanUS"toawordalreadyonthe boardto
formaplural.Youcan, however,playletterstoform awordthat connects
toaword alreadyonthe boardtomake
it aplural.Forexample, build
downtoform theword PLUS whichconnectswiththe word
NET and
makes
it pluralas shown inFigure7.You score pointsfor bothwords.

6. HOW TO SCORE WORDS
Youscore 2 pointsper lettertilefor any wordformedwithall letters
onlyonetile high(noletterintheword
is stackedontopofanother
letter).For example,theword DEAR inFigure
2 (page3) containsfour
letters,andeach
is onlyonetile high.To score thisword,just multiply
4 times2for atotalof 8 points.
Youscore 1 pointper lettertilefor any wordformedthat containsany
lettersstackedtwoor moretiles high.Count each letterinyour word
andevery lettertile undereach letterofyour word togetyour score.
For example,the word
WOOD inFigure 4 (page3)containsfour'letters
plusone lettertile underthenW"foratotal score of 5 points.
Youscore 2 extra bonuspointsifyou use theUQu"lettertile inany word
formedwith all lettersonlyonetile high.You do notreceiveany bonus
pointsifyou usethe"Quntileinaword formedwithany of
its letters
morethanonetile high.
Youscore 20 extra bonuspointsifyou use allseven ofyour lettertiles
inoneturn.
Ifyouformtwoor morewords onthesame turn, each word is scored.
Any letteror stackof letterscommontothesetwowords
is scoredfor
each word.For example, inFigure
3 (page3),the letternN" is commonto
thewordsON and NET.The word
ON scores 4 pointkandtheword NET
scores
6 pointsfor atotalof 10 pointsfor theturn.
At theendofthegame, 5 pointsare subtractedfromyour scorefor
each lettertileyou cannotplay.

7. ILLEGAL WORDS
Any wordthatfalls intoany category listedbelow,is an illegal
wordandcannotbeusedinthegame.
Words that arealwayscapitalized&e illegal.
Words requiringahyphenare illegal.
Words requiringan apostropheare illegal.
Abbreviationsandsymbolsare illegal.
Prefixesandsuffixes,thatcannotstandalone, are illegal.
Foreignwords are illegalunlesstheyappear inthedictionary.
8. CHALLENGINGA WORD
You can challengean opponent's word ifyouthink it's misspelledor
an illegalword.The word must
be challengedbeforeanother word is
played.Use adictionarytodecide ifthechallengedword is legalor
illegal.lf thechallengedword is illegal,the playerwho played it removes
thelettertilesfrom the boardandeither playsanotherword or passes.
9. PASSING
You may passyourturn at any timeduringthe game.Sometimes it is to
your advantagetopass, especiallytowardtheendofthegame, toallow
abetterscoringopportunitytoopenupfor you.
