This manual contains important information on proper use and maintenance
of the Hausted®Horizon Series Model 468XRY – X-Ray Trauma Stretcher. All
personnel involved in the use and maintenance of this equipment must
carefully review and comply with the warnings, cautions and instruc-
tions contained in this manual. These instructions are important to protect
the health and safety of personnel operating a Model 468XRY – X-Ray Trauma
Stretcher and should be retained in a conveniently accessible area for quick
reference.
Complete instructions for uncrating and connecting utilities, as well as
equipment drawings, have been furnished. If missing, contact STERIS for
replacement copies, giving the serial number and model numbers of the unit.
STERIS carries a complete line of accessories for use with this washer. A
STERIS representative will gladly review these with you.
The Hausted®Horizon Series Model 468XRY – X-Ray Trauma Stretchers are
intended for use in patient treatment, transport or recovery.
Indications for Use
A thorough preventive maintenance program is essential to safe and proper
unit operation. This manual contains maintenance schedules and procedures
which should be followed for satisfactory equipment performance.
You are encouraged to contact STERIS concerning our comprehensive
Annual Maintenance Agreements. Under the terms of these agreements,
preventive maintenance, adjustments, and replacement of worn parts are
done on a scheduled basis to assure equipment performance at peak
capability and to help avoid untimely or costly interruptions. STERIS maintains
a global staff of well equipped, factory-trained technicians to provide this
service, as well as expert repair services. Please contact your STERIS
representative for details.
Service Information
A listing of the safety precautions to be observed when operating and
servicing this equipment can be found in SECTION 1 of this manual. Do not
operate or service the equipment until you have become familiar with this
information.
Any alteration of this equipment not authorized or performed by STERIS
Engineering Service which could affect its operation will void the warranty,
could adversely affect use, could violate national, state, and local regulations,
and could jeopardize your insurance coverage.

The following Safety Precautions must be observed when operating or servicing this Hausted®Horizon®Model 468XRY –
X-Ray and Trauma Stretcher. WARNING indicates the potential for personal injury and CAUTION indicates the potential
for damage to equipment. For emphasis, certain Safety Precautions are repeated throughout the manual. Itisimportant
toreview ALL SafetyPrecautions beforeoperating or servicing theunit.
Strictly following these Safety Precautions enhances your ability to safely and effectively utilize the unit and helps the
customer avoid improper maintenance methods which may damage the unit or render it unsafe. It is important to
understand that these Safety Precautions are not exhaustive; customers are encouraged to develop their own safety
policies and procedures to enhance and compliment these Safety Precautions.
WARNING – LACERATION HAZARD:
When cutting bands always use a tool specifically designed for that purpose. This will help to avoid personal
injuries frequently incurred when bands are cut and tension released.
WARNINGS – PERSONAL INJURY:
The stretchers have a warning label located at the foot end stating: Maximum patient weight 226 Kilograms
(500 lbs).
Patient entry, egress and transfer should always be done with the brakes locked.
The brakes should always be on and patient side rails up when the patient is not in transport.
Be sure rail is locked before leaving patient.
Do not sit on end – tipping may ocur.
WARNING – PROPER OPERATION HAZARD:
Floors must be smooth and level to maintain optimum fifth wheel steering. Fifth wheel steering functions can be
influenced by floor irregularities (bumps or dips) greater than 1/2" (13 mm) across the span of the stretcher.

IMPORTANT: Report any shipping damage immediately! Inform shipper of
any damages – leave carton intact. Leave the stretcher in the receiving area
until inspection is complete.
Your Hausted®Horizon Series Model 468XRY – X-Ray Trauma Stretcher has
been carefully packaged at our manufacturing plant to ensure safe shipment to
you medical facility. There are several procedures you must follow to put your
new stretcher into service. These procedures only take a few minutes to
complete and are required to ensure proper operation of the stretcher.
Step 1 – Cut the two bands around the shipping carton.
Step 2 – Remove the top half of the carton and cut one side of the bottom half.
Step 3 – Remove the stretcher from the carton. Cut the bands from around the
stretcher.
Step 4 – Check to see if all features of the stretcher work properly. If all features
work properly, go to step 5. If any of the features of the stretcher do
not work properly, call STERIS for service.
Step 5 – Clean the stretcher using a mild detergent to remove any dirt
accumulated during shipment.
Step 6 – Place the unit into service.

3.3 Braking and
Steering Operation
3.3.1 Applying the Brakes The four-wheel central braking system is activated by depressing the red
pedal at any of the four corners of the unit (Figure 3-1). To fully engage the
brakes, the pedal should be pressed approximately 45°. All four caster wheels
should be locked from swiveling and rotating.
3.3.2 Releasing the Brakes Depress the green pedal at any of the four corners of the unit, until the pedal
is in the horizontal position (Figure 3-2). All four wheels should rotate and swivel
freely.
NOTE: The brakes should always be activated when unit is not in transport.
3.3.3 Applying The
Steering Lock/Fifth Wheel
From any corner of the stretcher, depress the green pedal downward into the
locked position. (Figure 3-3). Push the stretcher forward. Either one caster at
the foot end will lock into a non-swivel mode, or the optional fifth wheel will lower
and apply pressure to the floor. This allows straight steering by the attendant.

3.3.4 Releasing the
Steering Lock/Fifth Wheel
Depress the red pedal at any of the four corners of the unit, until the pedal is
in a horizontal position (Figure 3-2). All four wheels should rotate and swivel
freely, and/or the optional fifth wheel will lift off the floor.
3.4 Litter Top Height
Adjustment
3.4.1 Height Adjustment Press the pump pedal to the floor (Figure 3-4), then release. Repeat this
process until the desired height is obtained. Use smooth strokes on pump
pedal to ensure patient comfort.
3.4.2 Lowering the Litter
Top
Press down on the two release pedals at the same time (Figure 3-5) until
desired height is obtained.
NOTE: Do not stand on release pedals.
3.4.3 Trendelenburg
Adjustment
Place the unit at maximum height; see “Height Adjustment.” Press down on the
release pedal nearest the head end (Figure 3-6), until desired position is
obtained, then remove pressure.

3.4.4 Reverse
Trendelenburg Adjustment Place the unit at maximum height; see “Height Adjustment.” Press down on the
release pedal nearest the foot end (Figure 3-7), until desired position is
obtained, then remove pressure.
NOTE: Do not stand on release pedals.

3.5 Retracto Rail
Operation
3.5.1 Raising the Rail Grasp rail top cap in the middle of the rail (Figure 3-8), and lift.
3.5.2 Half Height Grasp the rail (Figure 3-8); lift up on the red trigger under the litter top (Figure
3-9) while lowering the rail. When rail starts to move down release trigger.
Lower rail until it locks into half height position.
3.5.3 Lowering the Rail Grasp the rail (Figure 3-8), lift up on the red trigger under the top (Figure
3-9) while lowering the rail. Hold up on the trigger until the rail is all the
way down.
NOTE: Be sure rail is locked before leaving patient.

3.6 Fowler Backrest
Operation
3.6.1 Raising the Backrest Grasp the fowler backrest tube and the gas spring activating handle (Figure
3-10), squeeze the handle and the tube together and lift. Once the desired
incline is achieved, release the handle. (Amount of manual lifting required will
vary depending on patient size; the gas springs are intended only to assist you
in lifting the patient).
3.6.2 Lowering the
Backrest Grasp the fowler backrest tube and the gas spring activating handle (Figure
3-10). Place you opposite hand on the backrest (Figure 3-11). Squeeze the
handle and the tube together while supporting tube. Adjust incline by either
slowly lowering patient or by pressing the fowler down. (The amount of manual
lifting or supporting required will vary, depending on patient size; the gas
springs are intended only to assist you in lifting or lowering the patient.)
3.7 Chest X-Ray
Cassette System
Operation
3.7.1 Loading Cassettes Raise the fowler to 90°. Rotate the red angles out until they are 90° to the tube
(Figures 3-12 & 3-13). Insert the cassette between fowler angles (Figure
3-14). Support the cassette while rotating the pressure rods out (Figure 3-15),
until they are pressing on the cassette (Figure 3-16). Reposition the cassette
as required (Figures 3-17, 3-18 and 3-19). Once the cassette is removed be
sure to place pressure rods and angles back against the fowler tube (Figure
3-20), eliminating them from radiolucent area of the fowler.

3.8 Loading the
Cassette Carrier
3.8.1 Placing Carrier in
Loading Position
NOTE: The following instructions can be done from either side of the unit.
Before attempting to access the carrier, you must first place it in the proper
position for loading. Grasp the red handle (Figure 3-21) and rotate it slightly
toward the head end of the stretcher (Figure 3-22). This operation de-activates
the built-in brake with the handle rotated; slide the carrier toward the foot end.
Position the red handle anywhere between the digit 22 and 46 on the red row
of numbers on the position label.
3.8.2 Accessing the
Carrier
NOTE: Do not attempt to load the carrier without placing into loading position.
Grasp the black handle located in the tunnel (Figure 3-23). Pull out on the
handle until the tray is fully exposed (Figure 3-24 and 3-25).

3.8.3 Loading and
Centering Cassette in
Carrier
With the tray exposed, place the cassette between the two angles built into the
carrier (Figure 3-26). Once the cassette is in the tray, push the angle up against
the side of the cassette (Figure 3-27). This automatically centers the cassette
in the carrier. Lock the cassette in place by tightening the small knob on the
angle (Figure 3-28).
3.8.4 Centering Carrier
on Unit
With the cassette installed, grasp the black handle and push the carrier back
into the tunnel (Figure 3-29). The carrier will click multiple times as it passes
over the offset positions, but continue until the black handle is just at the outside
of the tunnel Figure 3-23). You will feel a click as the carrier locks into the center
position.

3.9 Positioning the
Cassette Carrier
3.9.1 Proper Usage of Side
Label Markings
Running along both sides of the stretcher on the lower tubes is a label that is
used to assist in defining accurate location of the center point of the cassette
along the longitudinal axis of the stretcher. The upper set of (green) numbers
define the approximate center point that the X-ray will be taken on the stretcher
(Figure 3-30). The lower set of (red) numbers defines where the red handle on
the carrier must be positioned to locate the center of the cassette relative to the
point of the X-ray.
Example: The X-ray position required is determined by the technician (Figure
3-31). The center location pf that position is the defined visually on the upper
set of numbers (green) on the label. The center location in this instance is set
at the #5 on the upper set of (green) numbers (Figure 3-32), but the red handle
on the carrier is located at the #22 on the lower set of (red) numbers (Figure
3-33). To properly center the cassette under the x-ray location, you must
reposition the carrier. By adjusting the red handle on the carrier to the
corresponding #5 on the lower set of (red) numbers (Figure 3-34), you have
accurately located the center of the cassette as the center of X-ray position
(Figure 3-35).

3.9.2 Adjust the Carrier
Location
Determine the required location of the cassette carrier (See “Proper Usage of
Side Label Markings” on Section 3.9.1). Grasp the red handle (Figure 3-36)
and rotate it slightly toward the head end of the stretcher (Figure 3-37). This
process de-activates the built-in brake. With the handle rotated, slide the a
carrier to the required location (Figure 3-38), and release the handle, The
handle provides a built in braking system that allows the unit to be placed into
trendelenburg without the carrier changing positions.
3.9.3 Raising and
Lowering the Carrier
NOTE: Do not attempt to raise the carrier if the carrier is in an offset position.
Grasp the blue handle located under the lower tube on either side of the unit
(Figure 3-39), rotate the handle toward the foot end (Figure 3-40) of the
stretcher to raise cassette carrier closer to the underside of the litter top. To
lower the carrier, simply reverse the above process. Keep in mind, with a
cassette and grid loaded, the handle will lower quickly.

3.10 Loading the
Built-In Grid Holder
Position the carrier all the way toward the head end (see “Adjusting The Carrier
Location,” above). Raise the fowler backrest to an upright position (Figure 3-
41), exposing the carrier. Carefully place one end of the grid into the angle
mounted to the carrier (Figure 3-42). Lower the other end of the grid into the
opposite angle of the carrier (Figure 3-43). To remove the grid, reverse the
above process. The grid can be left in the carrier, as it will not interfere with
accessing the cassette tray from the side of the stretcher.

3.11 Loading
Cassettes Laterally
3.11.1 Lower the retracto
rails on stretcher
NOTE: Be sure patient is secured with restraint straps.
Slide one corner of the cassette between the gray rail cap and the pad (Figure
3-44). Continue inserting cassette until it is securely captured between rail and
pad (Figure 3-45). Once in place the cassette can be slid up and down the
length of the top as required (Figure 3-46).
