These units MUST use one of the vent systems
described in the Installing the Fireplace section of
the Installers Guide. NO OTHER vent systems or
components MAY BE USED.
This gas fireplace and vent assembly MUST be
vented directly to the outside and MUST NEVER be
attached to a chimney serving a separate solid fuel
burning appliance. Each gas appliance MUST USE
a separate vent system. Common vent systems are
PROHIBITED.
INSPECT the external vent cap on a regular basis to
make sure that no debris is interfering with the air
flow.
The glass door assembly MUST be in place and
sealed, and the trim door assembly MUST be in
place on the fireplace before the unit can be placed
into safe operation.
DO NOT OPERATE this appliance with the glass
door removed, cracked, or broken. Replacement of
the glass door should be performed by a licensed
or qualified service person. DO NOT strike or slam
the glass door.
The glass door assembly SHALL ONLY be
replaced as a complete unit, as supplied by the gas
fireplace manufacturer. NO SUBSTITUTE material
may be used.
DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners on the glass door
assembly. DO NOT ATTEMPT to clean the glass
door when it is hot.
Turn off the gas before servicing this appliance. It is
recommended that a qualified service technician
perform an appliance check-up at the beginning of
each heating season.
Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing
must be replaced before operating this appliance.
READ and UNDERSTAND all instructions carefully
before starting the installation. FAILURE TO
FOLLOW these installation instructions may result
in a possible fire hazard and will void the warranty.
Prior to the first firing of the fireplace, READ the
Using Your Fireplace section of the Owners Guide.
DO NOT USE this appliance if any part has been
under water. Immediately CALL a qualified service
technician to inspect the unit and to replace any part
of the control system and any gas control which has
been under water.
THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR USE WITH SOLID FUEL.
Installation and repair should be PERFORMED by a
qualified service person. The appliance and venting
system should be INSPECTED before initial use
and at least annually by a professional service
person. More frequent cleaning may be required
due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding
material, etc. It is IMPERATIVE that the unit’s
control compartment, burners, and circulating air
passageways BE KEPT CLEAN to provide for
adequate combustion and ventilation air.
Always KEEP the appliance clear and free from
combustible materials, gasoline, and other
flammable vapors and liquids.
NEVER OBSTRUCT the flow of combustion and
ventilation air. Keep the front of the appliance
CLEAR of all obstacles and materials for servicing
and proper operations.
Due to the high temperature, the appliance should
be LOCATED out of traffic areas and away from
furniture and draperies. Clothing or flammable
material SHOULD NOT BE PLACED on or near the
appliance.
Children and adults should be ALERTED to the
hazards of high surface temperature and should
STAY AWAY to avoid burns or clothing ignition.
Young children should be CAREFULLYSUPERVISED
when they are in the same room as the appliance.

Installation Codes
Thefireplaceinstallationmustconformtolocalcodes.Before
installing the fireplace, consult the local building code
agency to ensure that you are in compliance with all
applicable codes, including permits and inspections.
Intheabsenceoflocal codes,thefireplace installationmust
conform to the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1 (in
theUnited States)ortheCAN/CGA-B149InstallationCodes
(in Canada). The appliance must be electrically grounded
in accordance with local codes or, in the absence of local
codes with the National Electric CodeANSI/NFPA No. 70
(intheUnitedStates),ortothe CSAC22.1CanadianElectric
Code(inCanada).
Thesemodels(naturalgasandpropane)canbeinstalledin
a bedroom (in the United States) which has a total volume
ofunconfinedspaceappropriatetotheparticularinstallation.

(current edition). The Uniform Mechanical Code - (current

in obtaining an effective bedroom volume of unconfined
space.
Thesemodels(naturalgasandpropane)canbeinstalledin
abedroom(in Canada)ifa thermostat(Model WH-STAT)is
installed with the unit. Consult local code authorities.
Detailed installation instructions for Model WH-STAT are
included with the kit.
HighAltitude Installations
U.L. Listed gas appliances are tested and approved with-
outrequiringchangesforelevationsfrom 0 to 2,000 feet in
the U. S.A. and in Canada.
Wheninstallingthisapplianceat an elevation above 2,000
feet, it may be necessary to decrease the input rating by
changingtheexistingburnerorificeto a smaller size. Input
rate should be reduced by 4% for each 1000 feet above a
2000 foot elevation in the U.S.A. or 10% for elevations
between2000 and4500feet inCanada.Iftheheating value
of the gas has been reduced, these rules do not apply. To
identify the proper orifice size, check with the local gas
utility.
Ifinstallingthisapplianceatanelevationabove4,500feet
(in Canada), check with local authorities.

For all side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment
installed in every dwelling, building or structure used in
whole or in part for residential purposes, including those
owned or operated by the Commonwealth and where the
side wall exhaust vent termination is less than seven (7)
feetabovefinished grade intheareaof theventing,includ-
ing but not limited to decks and porches, the following re-
quirements shall be satisfied:
Installation of Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Atthetimeofinstallationof the side wall horizontal vented
gas fueled equipment, the installing plumber or gasfitter
shallobservethatahardwiredcarbonmonoxidedetector
with an alarm and battery back-up is installed on the floor
level where the gas equipment is to be installed. In addi-
tion,theinstallingplumberorgasfittershall observe that a
battery operated or hard wired carbon monoxide detector
with an alarm is installed on each additional level of the
dwelling,buildingorstructureservedby the side wall hori-
zontalventedgas fueled equipment.Itshall be therespon-
sibilityofthe property ownertosecure the servicesofqual-
ifiedlicensedprofessionals fortheinstallation ofhardwired
carbonmonoxidedetectors.
In the event that the side wall horizontally vented gas fu-
eledequipmentisinstalled in a crawl space oranattic,the
hard wired carbon monoxide detector with alarm and bat-
tery back-up may be installed on the next adjacent floor
level.
In the event that the requirements of this subdivision can
not be met at the time of completion of installation, the
ownershallhave a period ofthirty(30) days to complywith
theaboverequirements;provided,however,thatduringsaid
thirty(30)day period, a batteryoperatedcarbonmonoxide
detector with an alarm shall be installed.
Approved Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Eachcarbonmonoxide detectorasrequired in accordance
withtheaboveprovisions shall comply withNFPA720 and
beANSI/UL2034 listed and IAS certified.
Signage
Ametalorplasticidentificationplateshallbepermanently
mountedtothe exteriorofthebuilding ataminimumheight
of eight (8) feet above grade directly in line with the ex-
haust vent terminal for the horizontally vented gas fueled
heating appliance or equipment. The sign shall read, in
print size no less than one-half (1/2) inch in size, “GAS
VENT DIRECTLY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALL OB-
STRUCTIONS”.
Inspection
Thestateorlocalgasinspectorofthesidewallhorizontally
ventedgasfueled equipmentshallnotapprove theinstalla-
tionunless, uponinspection,the inspectorobservescarbon
monoxidedetectorsandsignageinstalledinaccordancewith
theprovisions of248CMR5.08(2)(a)1through 4.
Exemptions
Thefollowingequipmentisexemptfrom248CMR5.08(2)(a)1
through4:
• Theequipmentlistedin Chapter 10 entitled“Equipment
Not Required To Be Vented” in the most current edition
of NFPA54 as adopted by the Board; and
• ProductApproved side wall horizontally vented gas fu-
eled equipment installed in a room or structure sepa-
ratefrom thedwelling, buildingorstructureusedinwhole
orinpartforresidentialpurposes.
MANUFACTURERREQUIREMENTS
Gas Equipment Venting System Provided
Whenthemanufacturer of ProductApprovedsidewall hor-
izontallyventedgasequipmentprovidesaventingsystem
designorventingsystem components with the equipment,
the instructions provided by the manufacturer for installa-
tionoftheequipment and the ventingsystemshallinclude:
• Detailed instructions for the installation of the venting
system design or the venting system components; and
• A complete parts list for the venting system design or
ventingsystem.
Gas Equipment Venting System NOT Provided
When the manufacturer of a Product Approved side wall
horizontallyventedgas fueled equipment doesnotprovide
the parts for venting the flue gases, but identifies “special
venting systems”, the following requirements shall be sat-
isfiedbythemanufacturer:
• Thereferenced“specialventingsystem”instructionsshall
beincludedwith the appliance orequipmentinstallation
instructions;and
• The“specialventingsystems”shallbeProductApproved
by the Board, and the instructions for that system shall
includeapartslistand detailed installation instructions.
A copy of all installation instructions for all Product Ap-
provedsidewall horizontally ventedgasfueledequipment,
all venting instructions, all parts lists for venting instruc-
tions, and/or all venting design instructions shall remain
with the appliance or equipment at the completion of the
installation.

2Getting Started
Introducing the Gateway Fireplace
The Gateway fireplace is designed to operate with all ex-
haust gases expelled to the outside.
The information contained in this Installers Guide, unless
noted otherwise, applies to all models and gas control
systems.Gas fireplacediagrams,includingthedimensions,
are shown in this section.
Pre-install Preparation
Thisgasfireplaceanditscomponentsaretestedandsafe
when installed in accordance with this Installers Guide.
Report to your dealer any parts damaged in shipment,
particularly the condition of the glass. Do not install any
unit with damaged, incomplete, or substitute parts.
The vent system components are shipped in separate
packages. The gas logs are shipped in the fireplace and
mustbeonunwrappedbeforefiring the unit.
Read all of the instructions before starting the
installation. Follow these instructions carefully during
the installation to ensure maximum safety and benefit.
Failure to follow these instructions will void the
owner’s warranty and may present a fire hazard.
When planning a fireplace installation, it’s necessary to
determine:
•Where the unit is to be installed.
•Theventsystemconfigurationtobeused.
•Gas supply piping.
•Electricalwiring.
•Framingandfinishingdetails.
•Whetheroptionalaccessories—devices such as a fan,
wallswitch,fresh air kit orremotecontrol— are desired.
If the fireplace is to be installed on carpeting or tile, or on
any combustible material other than wood flooring, the
fireplace must be installed on a metal or wood panel that
extends the full width and depth of the fireplace.
Warranty
TheHeat&GloWarrantywill be voided by,andHeat& Glo
disclaims any responsibility for, the following actions:
• Installationof anydamaged fireplaceor ventsystem com-
ponent.
• Modificationofthefireplaceorventsystem.
• Installation other than as instructed by Heat & Glo.
• Improper positioning of the gas logs or the glass door.
• Installationand/oruseof any component partnotmanu-
factured and approved by Heat & Glo, not withstanding
anyindependenttestinglaboratoryorotherpartyapproval
of such component part or accessory.
ANY SUCH ACTION MAY POSSIBLY CAUSE A FIRE
HAZARD.

Constructing the Fireplace Chase
A chase is a vertical box-like structure built to enclose the
gasfireplaceand/oritsvent system. Vertical ventsthatrun
on the outside of a building may be, but are not required to
be, installed inside a chase.
CAUTION: TREATMENT OF FIRESTOP SPACERS AND
CONSTRUCTIONOFTHECHASE MAYVARYWITHTHE
TYPE OF BUILDING. THESE INSTRUCTIONSARE NOT
SUBSTITUTES FOR THE REQUIREMENTS OF LOCAL
BUILDINGCODES.THEREFORE, YOURLOCALBUILD-
ING CODES MUST BE CHECKED TO DETERMINE THE
REQUIREMENTSFORTHESESTEPS.
Factory-builtfireplacechases should beconstructed inthe
manner of all outside walls of the home to prevent cold air
draftingproblems.Thechaseshould not break the outside
buildingenvelope inanymanner.
Thismeansthat thewalls,ceiling, baseplateand cantilever
floorofthe chaseshouldbe insulated. Vaporandair infiltra-
tionbarriersshould beinstalledin thechaseas perregional
codesfor therestofthehome.Additionally,inregions where
cold air infiltration may be an issue, the inside surfaces
maybesheetrockedandtapedformaximumairtightness.
To further prevent drafts, the firestops should be caulked
with high temperature caulk to seal gaps. Gas line holes
andotheropenings shouldbecaulked withhightempcaulk
or stuffed with unfaced insulation. If the appliance is being
installedonacementslab,alayerofplywoodmaybeplaced
underneathtopreventconducting cold upintotheroom.
THECHASESHOULD BECONSTRUCTEDSO THATALL
CLEARANCES TO THE FIREPLACEARE MAINTAINED
AS SPECIFIED WITHIN THIS INSTALLERS GUIDE.
Clearance Requirements
The top, back, and sides of the fireplace are defined by
stand-offs.Theminimum clearance toaperpendicularwall
extendingpastthe face ofthefireplace is oneinch(25mm).
The metal endsof the fireplace may NOTberecessedinto
combustible construction.
The distance from the unit to combustible construction
is to be measured from the unit outer wrap surface to
thecombustibleconstruction,NOTfrom thescrewheads

Step 2. Framing the Fireplace

NOTE: A 1” clearance (B-Vent) or 1-1/2” clearance

the pipe in a horizontal configuration and any

combustible materials.

Draft is the pressure difference needed to vent fireplaces
successfully. Considerations for successful draft include:
• Preventingnegative pressure
• Locationoffireplaceandchimney
Negative pressure resultsfromtheimbalanceofair avail-
able for the fireplace to operate properly. Causes for this
imbalanceinclude:
• Exhaust fans (kitchen, bath, etc.)
• Rangehoods
• Combustion air requirements for furnaces, water heat-
ersandothercombustionappliances
• Clothesdryers
• Locationofreturn-airtofurnace or air conditioning
• Imbalances of the HVAC air handling system
• Upperlevel airleaks(recessed lighting,attichatch open-
ing, duct leaks)
To minimize theeffectsofnegative air pressure, the follow-
ing must be considered:
• Install the fresh air kit. Install the intake on the side of
the house towards prevailing winds during the heating
season.
• Ensureadequateoutdoor air is suppliedforcombustion
appliancesandexhaustequipment.
• Ensurefurnaceand air conditioningreturnvents are not
located in the immediate vicinity of the fireplace.
• Avoid installing the fireplace near doors, walkways or
small isolated spaces.
• Recessedlightingshouldbeof“sealed can” design; at-
tichatchesweatherstripped or sealed;andatticmount-
ed ductwork and air handler joints and seams taped or
sealed.
• Basement installations should be avoided due to stack
effect. Stack effect creates negative pressure in lower
levels. Hearth & Home Technologies recommends the
use of direct vent fireplaces in basements.
Locationofthefireplaceandchimneywillaffectperformance.
As shown in Figure 3.3, the chimney should:
• Be installed through the warm space enclosed by the
buildingenvelope.This helps toproducemore draft, es-
peciallyduringlightinganddie-downof the fire.
• Penetrate the highest part of the roof. This minimizes
theeffectsofwindturbulence.
• Be located away from trees, adjacent structures, un-
evenrooflinesand other obstructions.
Offsetscanrestrictdraftsotheiruse should be minimized.
Consider the fireplace location relative to floor and ceiling
and attic joists.
Asphyxiation Risk.
•Negative pressure can cause spillage of
combustion fumes and soot.
• Fireplaceneedstodraftproperlyforsafety.

This unit is equipped to accept outside air. It is recom-
mended that an AK-TV air kit be used with this appli-
ance. By using outside make-up air, the amount of room
airusedfor combustion willbereduced. However,in a neg-
ative pressure condition the outside air kit MUST be in-
stalled to obtain proper performance and to help prevent
spillage of combustion gases.
A 4-inch side collar/damper (found in AK-TV Kit) must be
installedonthefireplacebyattachingthesidecollartothe
outerwrapofthefireplaceattheright-handrearcornerusing
sheetmetalscrews.Attachdamperhandle(extendedhandle
foundinmanualbag)tothe damper door prior to attaching
doortoouter wrap. Thenliftthe handle intothenotch under
the fireplace. See Figure 3.5. Attach one end of a 4-inch
flexible air duct (not provided in theAK-TV Kit) to the side
collar and the other end of the duct to the make-up air
termination cap. Use plastic tie straps to secure the ends
of the flex duct to each collar.
Air Damper
Before lighting the burner, open the damper. Close the
damperwhentheburneris off.
Detailedinstallation instructions for ModelAK-TVOutside
Air kit are found in the kit.

Step 4. Installing the Vent System
A. Vent System Approvals
Model GATEWAY is approved to use Duravent 4-inch
(102mm)diameterB-typeventfor installationsthatterminate
vertically. ThePV-Flex Seriesventpipeis approved foruse
ininstallationsthatterminate horizontally.This pipeis tested
andlistedasanapproved component of the fireplace.
This model may also use single wall rigid or flexible gas
vent IF and ONLY IF the vent system is installed within
non-combustibleconstructionsuch as amasonrychimney.
The same diameter noted above for B-type vent must be
usedforsingle-wallvent(see Figure 3.6).
For B-type vent the clearance to combustibles is 1-inch.
Followvent manufacturersREQUIREDclearances.ForPV-
Flextheclearancesare 1-1/2” top and 1”sidesandbottom
whenventinghorizontally. For PV-Flextheclearancesare
1” all sides when passing vertically through combustible
materials.

NOTE:DuetothepositivepressurewithintheGateway
ventingsystem,when usingPV-FLEX usea1/2” bead
of silicone caulk on ALL pipe ends and connectors
throughoutthevent runtoensurea completelysealed

Vent pipes must be installed within the conditioned house
envelope in order to avoid flue gas condensation. Vertical
termination through an unconditioned attic space is
permissible.
The flame and ember appearance may vary based on the
typeoffuelburnedand the venting configuration used.

Install Support Brackets
For Horizontal Runs -The vent system must be sup-
ported every five (5) feet of horizontal run by a horizontal
pipe support for B-Vent (see Figure 3.21 for PV-Flex pipe
supportbrackets).
To install support brackets for horizontal runs:
• Place the pipe supports around the vent pipe.
• Nail the pipe supports to the framing members.
To install firestops for horizontal runs that pass through
eitherinteriororexteriorwalls:
• Cuta7in.x8in.(178mmx204mm)holethroughthewall.
• Position the firestops on both sides of the hole previ-
ously cut and secure the firestops with nails or screws.
• Continuetheventrunthrough the firestops.

For Horizontal Runs - Firestops are REQUIRED on both
sidesofacombustible wall through whichtheventpasses.
