terrific whether it’s playing from your smartphone or any portable
audio device. This Owner’s Guide is intended to provide a useful
overview of the features of your new HE400S and how to best
operate it for many years of enjoyment, safety and reliability.

Headphone Overview
Outstanding Sound Quality and Spatial Soundstage
Compared to traditional dynamic headphones, the planar magnetic
technology oers largely superior sounding experience in terms of
quality and soundstage. Dynamic headphones utilize conductors that
vibrate in select areas of the diaphragm. This results in a large percent-
age of the diaphragm that cannot be directly driven by those conduc-
tors. Planar magnetic headphones are fundamentally dierent, and
operate on a dierent technical principle. Firstly, the weight of the
planar headphone (conductors + diaphragm) is much lower than that
of the dynamic headphones. This results in planar headphones’ superior
performance in treble. Therefore, the HE400S has a wide range of
frequency response (20Hz-35KHz) to yield spatial expansion.
Moreover, planar headphones have conductive layers distributed
throughout the surface of diaphragm. The diaphragm is evenly driven by
the magnetic force so that planar headphones have significantly lower
distortion when compared with conventional dynamic headphones.
Easily Driven
Benefit from the newest planar driver technology, HE400S
headphones have extraordinary high sensitivity and low impedance
(22 Ohm). In other words, they are one of the simplest to drive planar
magnetic headphones. No longer are you tied to your bulky desktop
amplifier, nor is a portable amplifier necessary to achieve optimal
audio reproduction. You can listen to the music directly from your
smartphone headphone output at reasonable volumes.
This lower distortion results in better overall reproduction of minute
details. Instrumental positioning and imaging are improved, and the
headphone has very natural soundstaging capabilities.

Set-up Instructions
The HE400S is designed to be used with its earpads on at all times. If for
some reason you need to remove the earpads, please replace them as
soon as possible.

User-Replaceable Connector Design
The cables are user-replaceable and have orientation indicators for
left and right channel with a “L” and “R” symbol indicated inside the
headband. The package includes one ” 3.5mm connector so it can
be used with a wide array of equipment via a mini 6.35mm plug. The
plugs are easy to switch and replace if you wish to connect dierent
cables or amplifiers.

If the ear cups do not comfortably rest on your ears, you can move the
sliding black block on each side of the headband to adjust the length
to suit the shape of your head.

To replace the earpads, first carefully remove them by lifting the inner
tabs back. Then you will see there is gap between two screws inside
the driver. Insert the two adjacent plastic clips inside the earpads into
the gap. Use your middle finger to hold the earpads inside while your
thumb holding the outside. Push the earpads slightly with your thumb
until the remaining clips are inserted. Rotate the earpad so that it is
firmly installed.

Please allow for at least 150 hours of consistent playback to properly
break-in your new headphones. This break-in period does not have to
be at high volume.
The connectors utilize 2.5 mm mini plugs on the headphone side.
Push the connector straight onto the socket. Repeat the process with
the other mini plug connector.
The supplied cable adapter with the large ” (6.35mm) jack is
connected with the typical headphone output of an amplifier or even
better with a headphone amplifier. Please be aware that many home
amplifiers may mute the loudspeaker output when a headphone is
connected. For most portable audio devices, the smaller 1/8”
(3.5mm) jack may be used.
To clean your headphone, please use a soft, slightly damp cloth only.
Do not use any detergents and make sure not to let any fluid enter
the open sides of the headphone. The pleather headband can be
maintained using standard leather care products. When your ear
pads become suciently worn, you should replace them with a new
pair, available through HIFIMAN or through your local retailer. Note:
The internal drivers do not require maintenance. Any attempt to
remove or modify them will void your warranty.
