Hitachi Sabrent USB-DSC8 User manual

Sabrent USB-DSC8 3.0 USB to SATA/IDE Hard Drive Adapter
2.5” otebook IDE Hard Drive
1. Connect the short 2.5” IDE connector from the Sabrent adapter to the pins on your 2.5” Hard Drive. Note the
keyed pin and s ot and make sure that the drive and the device ine up proper y and are secure y connected:

Please ote: When you remove a hard drive from an existing aptop, you may need to first remove the outer cage and
sometimes an additiona converter that is covering the IDE or SATA connectors.
(The hard drive is in a cage that needs to be removed, and there is a converter covering the pins.)
The Hard Drive connectors must be exposed to connect the Enc osure:

2. Connect the USB cab e from the Hard Drive Adapter to an avai ab e USB port on your computer.

3. In most cases, the USB cab e wi supp y sufficient power for the drive to spin up and initiate. Some arger
capacity Hard Drives may require more power than USB to provide sufficient power to initiate. You may need to
use the supp ied power supp y to provide the extra needed power:

3.5” Desktop IDE Hard Drive
1. Most 3.5” IDE Hard Drives have Jumpers. Make sure they are set to Master Only. ( ote: Please refer to the
drive manufacturer’s website for more information regarding your specific hard drive model.):

2. Connect the IDE power adapter direct y in the IDE drive:

3. Connect the ong 3.5 inch IDE connector to the pins on your hard drive. Note the keyed pin and s ot and make
sure that the drive and the device ine up proper y and are secure y connected:

4. Connect the USB cable from the DSC5 to a USB port on your computer.

2.5/3.5 Inch SATA Drive
1. Connect the Sabrent converter to the power adapter, and then p ug the SATA power end into the SATA drive
direct y:

2. Connect the SATA data cable into the Sabrent Converter, and then connect the other end direct y into the SATA
drive:

3. Connect the USB cab e from the Sabrent converter to an avai ab e USB port on your computer.

The Hard Drive should now spin/vibrate, indicating that the Hard Drive is powering up.
***If the Hard Drive does not spin, it may indicate that the hard drive itself is no longer working.
Quite often, older laptops or desktops that have failed may also have a malfunctioning hard drive.
HDD Enclosures can only access working drives.
e. A Drive letter should appear in MY COMPUTER, indicating that the Hard Drive has mounted and
the data is accessible.
1. try connecting to a different USB port on the computer (Sometimes rear ports work more reliable than front panel
ports)
2. try connecting to a different computer.
3. Try using a different Hard Drive.
If that still does not work, that may indicate that the Adapter itself is not working and needs to be replaced.
If 2.5” drives work but 3.5” drives do not, you may only need a new pwer supply.
Hard Drive Setup
For Windows 2000/XP/VISTA/7, no drivers or software are necessarry.
If the Hard-Drive is brand new you may need to initialize it first in order to cause the Drive Letter to appear:
1. Click the Start button, right-click on “My Computer”, and se ect “Manage”:
2. Click on “Disk Management”:
3. Locate the drive in the right co umn and right-click on the drive and click “ ew Simple Volume”:
4. At the fo owing prompt, click “ ext”:
5. Click “ ext”:
6. Assign a drive letter to the drive, then click “ ext”:
7. Click on “Format this volume with the following settings:” Change the “File system” to “ TFS”. Change the
“Volume label” to what you want the drive to be named. Click the checkbox for “Perform a quick format”.
Click “ ext”:
8. Click “Finish”. Windows wi now begin formatting and initia izing the disk:
9. Open “My Computer” and verify that the drive shows up proper y:
If the drive has already been formatted, you can skip these steps.
1. Check the “Device Manager” to make sure that the “USB Mass Storage Device” driver appears under the
“Universal Serial Bus Controllers” section. A so check that the drive shows up under “Disk drives” as a “(Hard
drive model number) USB Device”. There shou d be no error message in your Device Manager, such as a bo d ?

2. You may a so need to change the HDD settings from Dynamic to Basic, then format NTFS, and give it a drive
etter, but you shou d back up the data on your drive before doing this. To convert the disk from Dynamic to

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. My drive died or was damaged in my previous computer. Will it work with this adapter?
This adapter is the equiva ent of p ugging in the drive direct y into your computer’s IDE or SATA port. If the drive
was damaged to the point where it doesn’t work when p ugged direct y into the computer, then it is ike y that it
wi not work using this adapter.
2. I set my IDE drive’s Jumper to the Master setting, but it still doesn’t show up on my computer.
Usua y you wi have to set the Jumper to Master, but depending on the specific drive and the specific settings
of the computer, you may have to set it to S ave or Cab e Se ect.
3. My drive doesn’t show up on my computer, but it has data and works elsewhere.
Make sure you are connecting the Hard Drive in the correct sequence: First connect the power supp y, and then
connect the USB Cab e to the computer.
