RECOMMENDED OPERATION PRACTICES
N40 HANDSET with SUPPORT BRACKET
Note:
The following Recommended Operation Practices (ROP) summarize the results of observations
experienced during In-Service operation of the N40 handset with support bracket for several years.
This Recommended Operation Practices manual intends to give some advice to operational and
maintenance staff on how to handle handsets with support brackets for a safe operation, aiming to
improve their life cycle and reduce maintenance costs. Nevertheless damages cannot be avoided
completely herewith.

A. INTRODUCTION
1. GENERAL
A. Cockpit and cabin crews are requested to read this manual carefully to be able to use
N40 handsets with support brackets in an adequate and proper way to avoid any
unexpected damages.
B. This document describes operational and recommended handling practices for the
component in service. It does not describe maintenance of components. For
maintenance procedures, please refer to applicable CMM under ASSOCIATED
PUBLICATION.
C. This document contains:
-Information about operation of the component
-Recommended handling practices
-Equipment cleaning procedure
2. REVISION SERVICE
This manual will be revised by revision if necessary.

1. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION OF THE HANDSET WITH SUPPORT BRACKET
A. SUBASSEMBLIES
The handset with support bracket consists out of three main assemblies:
- Handset
- Cable (Coiled cord)
- Support bracket.

iii. RELEASE MECHANISM
The handset is automatically held by a snap-in locking mechanism of the support bracket when it
becomes hooked on.
a. CABIN HANDSET
The cabin handset has a locking mechanism, which allows locking / unlocking the handset on /
from its support bracket.
To unlock the handset from its support bracket press the Release Button, lift handset up and
move it away from its support bracket.

To release the handset –press the Release
Button, lift the handset up and move it away
from its support bracket

To lock the handset, first place the lower side of
the handset on the bracket (the locking nose of
the support bracket should engage the hole
located at the lower side of the handset, it
should fit if the microphone side is correctly put
in the bracket) and then push without using too
much force on the upper side of the handset to
get it rested in, then make sure it is safely locked.
See fig. 6.
Unlocked handset is going to drop and could
lead to an unserviceable handset.
WARNING:
Unlocked handset may also drop and harm
persons!

b. COCKPIT / FLIGHT DECK HANDSET
The cockpit handset has a release mechanism, which allows to lock / unlock the handset on /
from its support bracket.
NOTICE: Cockpit / flight deck handset does not have a release button
To release a handset from its support bracket, handset needs to be pulled out by torsion force.
To lock the handset, please refer to the procedure for cabin handset.

iv. COILED CORD (CABLE)
The cable assures the electrical connection
between Handset and its support bracket.
To avoid any kind of damages of coiled
cord, handset or support bracket, do not
stretch the cable more than
2 meters.
Overstretching the cable can result in
electrical disconnections and could lead to
an unserviceable handset.

v. HANDLING DURING ANNOUNCEMENT/ INTERCOMMUNICATION
To make any announcement or
intercommunication, hold the Handset close
to ear and mouth as you do normally when
you talk using a telephone.
Then speak into the microphone at a
distance between 1 and 2 cm.

Holding the handset differently, for instance
as shown in fig. 10, may decrease the
audibility of the announcement or even
disturb it.

C. HOW TO AVOID DAMAGE DUE TO IMPROPER HANDLING
1. INTRODUCTION
Please use the handset only for the intended use and advise your maintenance crew to check the
handset if you detect these or similar damages to avoid equipment failures and operational interrupts
(delays).
2. OVERSTRETCHED CABLE
When the cable gets overstretched to a length of more than 2 meters, it will lose its capability to retract
to regular condition and could lead to an unserviceable handset.
3. DAMAGED HOUSING
When the housing is not opened with the dismantle tool (P/N 24-13-90001) as advised in the relevant
CMM, it may retain permanent damage.

4. BROKEN BRACKET
When the handset gets pressed too hard or not locked onto the bracket as shown in this ROP, the
bracket may retain permanent damage. This can lead to the handset no longer being locked and results
in falling down which can damage the unit or injures people.
5. DAMAGED CABLE HOLDER
When the torque of the screwdriver is not adjusted as described in the relevant CMM, the cable holder
may retain permanent damage.
6. BROKEN SMD PLUG CONNECTOR
When the SMD plug gets not plugged in and out as described in the relevant CMM, the plug and the
connector may retain permanent damage.

7. DAMAGED BEND RELIEF
When the cable gets overstretched or excessively kinked, the bend relief can retain permanent damage.
This may result in a free play of the cable in the bend relief and damaging the SMD plug connector.
8. DAMAGED RECEIVER CAPSULE
When the handset gets pushed too hard onto the bracket, the housing of the handset & the receiver
capsule may retain permanent damage.

9. DAMAGED PROTECTIVE SIEVE
The protective sieve is qualified to resist a force up to 300 N*. It usually resists a typical force of
400-500 N*. The protective sieve may retain permanent damage if it is exposed to a force more than
500 N. Nevertheless please do not deform the protective sieve by other objects.
* tested with a compression strut, surface of 4 cm²
10. DAMAGE DUE TO LIQUID PENETRATION
If liquids penetrate the keypad, it may cause malfunctions and failures of electrical components. Please
pay attention when cleaning or using the handset near liquids.
11. DAMAGE DUE TO HIGH PRESSURE ONTO THE KEYPAD
Please press the keys of the keypad for activation until you hear a -CLICK- and get a tactile feedback.
If the keys are pressed repeatedly and with to high pressure, the keys may get wear. This may result in a
higher required pressing force for activation. When the required force gets too high, it can be hard to
activate the keys.
The keys are designed for a pressure of 9N for the PTT and a pressure of 8N for all other keys only.
Pressing with a higher force then 8-9N can cause pain in the finger.

D. EQUIPMENT CLEANING PROCEDURE
Please follow the cleaning instructions and obtain the warnings and notes below.
WARNING: USE SOLVENTS/CLEANING AGENTS WITH A GOOD SUPPLY OF AIR.
STRICTLY FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS AND SAFETY DATA SHEET!
USE APPROVED PROTECTION WHEN YOU APPLY THE SOLVENTS/ CLEANING AGENTS. DO
NOT DRINK SOLVENTS, SMOKE OR BREATHE THE GAS. SOLVENTS/CLEANING AGENTS ARE
POISONOUS AND FLAMMABLE.
IF YOU GET THE SOLVENTS/CLEANING AGENTS ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES:
• FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS AND SAFETY DATA SHEET,
• IF NECESSARY GET MEDICAL AID.
CAUTION: USE ONLY THE SPECIFIED MATERIALS AND SOLUTIONS OR THEIR EQUIVALENTS. THE
SURFACE PROTECTION COULD BE DAMAGED IF UNSPECIFIED MATERIALS ARE USED.
(1) Carefully clean the parts with a soft and lint-free cloth moistened with the appropriate cleaning
agent.
Note: Please apply cleaning agent only on the lint-free cloth and not directly on the equipment. To
avoid contamination of the cleaning agent, do not put the cloth into the cleaning agent. Pay
attention not to use too much cleaning agent. The cloth should only be moistened and not too
wet.
(2) Dry cleaned parts with a clean lint-free cloth or use compressed air of max. 2.0 bar (29.0 psi).
Note: Please do not apply compressed air directly to the microphone. This can damage the
microphone.
We advise to use the Aqueous Cleaner-Aircraft Interior recommended by Airbus (Material Ref. 08ACA1)
and warm clean water as cleaning agent.
