Symbol Definition
ESD HAZARD: Danger of an electro-static discharge to which

Protective Earth (PE) terminal:. Provided for connection of the
protective earth (green or green/yellow) supply system conductor.

Fiber Optic Coupling Scheme
Coax to Fiber Optic Links
The ControlNet Repeater Adapter and ControlNet Fiber Module quickly connect to form
a Repeater/Fiber hub that lets you extend the length of a coax segment through fiber optic
links – See Figure 1. This is similar to using a coax repeater, but fiber optic cable
provides a more secure transmission over a greater distance.
The ControlNet Repeater Adapter (or the fiber optic repeater) connects to a coax trunk
cable using a standard tap and drop cable. Each Repeater Adapter supports up to four
Fiber Modules. Each Fiber Module has a pair of Receive and Transmit ports for fiber
optic cable connections.

Repeater/Fiber Hub
The Repeater Adapter and Fiber Module are designed to plug together on a user supplied
35 x 7.5 mm metal, top hat rails (DIN EN50022). The Repeater Adapter model TC-
RPA002 requires a 24 Vdc power supply and it supplies the power to the Fiber Module.
The Fiber Module is available in a short distance model TC-RPFS01 and a medium
distance model TC-RPFM01. The TC-RPFS01 short-distance, Fiber Module supports
fiber optic trunk segments up to 300 meters (984 feet) in length. The TC-RPFM01
medium-distance, Fiber Module supports fiber optic trunk segments up to 3 kilometers
(9,842 feet) or more in length. The actual distance supported depends upon the quality of
the fiber cable and the quantity and quality of cable splices and connectors, including
patch panels
Fiber optic cable considerations
Since cable routes can vary from using plenum air returns to being buried underground,
we suggest that you work with a cable manufacturer to select the wiring that meets your
particular installation requirements. If you have access to the internet, you can visit the
Belden Wire and Cable Company web site at www.belden.com for helpful technical data
on a wide variety of wire and cable types.

You can purchase prefabricated cable with Versalink fiber termination or a termination
kit and bulk cable from the Allen-Bradley Company, Inc. as noted below. This is 200/230
micron HCS cable for use with the short-distance Fiber Module only.

Fiber Optic Cable Handling Guidelines
WARNING
•Never look directly into the fiber ports or the end of a cable
connected to an active transmitter. The light levels may damage
your eyesight.
•Never use a microscope to view an active cable system. The
concentration of the light from the microscope could permanently
damage your eye.
Please observe the following general guidelines when handling fiber optic cable, as well
as all manufacturer recommendations.
•Do not bend the cable beyond the minimum radius specified.
•Do not touch the end of the fiber optic strands.
•Always protect the ends of a fiber optic strand from coming in contact with dust, dirt,
or other contaminants.
•Always put protective caps on disconnected fiber cable connectors.
•Clean any contaminated ends with a soft, clean, lintless cloth and alcohol.
•Observe all local regulations for installation, including the use of personal safety
equipment.
•Always dispose of any fiber waste. This prevents the contamination of clothes, fingers,
or eyes by glass fragments.
•Review all cable parameters and specifications before installation. Be sure you have
the proper amount of connectors and installation equipment. Never attempt to use non-
compatible connectors and installation tools.

Segment and link planning considerations
ATTENTION
The segment and link planning considerations covered in the Experion PKS
Planning Guide in Knowledge Builder also apply for ControlNet fiber media.
The following considerations are specifically related to using fiber media in a ControlNet
system. They are intended to supplement the ControlNet coax system considerations.
•The total number of coax Repeaters and/or fiber optic Repeaters that can be connected
in series between two nodes is five (5) or less. The total number of repeaters includes:
−Each coax Repeater used to connect one coax segment to another in the path.
−Each Repeater/Fiber hub used to connect a coax segment to a fiber optic segment in
the path.
−Each Fiber Module used to connect one fiber optic segment to another in the path.
•The total length of ControlNet coax and fiber optic cable between any two nodes can
not be more than 10 km (32,808 ft).

Network Update Time (NUT) considerations
The default NUT settings for every ControlNet Interface (CNI) module are as follows:
•NUT Time = 10000 microseconds
•Smax = 1
•UMax = 20 (w/KTC card) or 24 (w/PCIC card)
•Number of Repeaters = 0
•Cable Length = 1000 Meters
•Cable Usage = A+B
•My System uses Fiber Optics = No Checkmark
Since the Number of Repeaters and Cable Length settings affect the maximum
communications delay time in the network, you may need to adjust these settings to
match your network configuration. Set the Number of Repeaters to equal the number of
repeaters (fiber and/or coax) used in series in the longest cable (fiber and/or coax) path
between two nodes in the link. Set the Cable Length to equal the longest communications
distance (fiber and/or coax cable) between two nodes in the link, if greater than 1000
meters (3,280 feet). Also, if you use fiber optic cable in your network, you must check
the checkbox for the My System uses Fiber Optics selection.
You can use the Network Tools (NTools) utility supplied with the Experion PKS
Engineering Tools to change the network parameters (Keeper Values) in a CNI with an
address of one. Please refer to the NTools online Help for more information.

About the optical power budget
The maximum allowable attenuation for a system using a medium distance Fiber Module
is 9.3 dB. The connectors, splices, and fiber cable all contribute to the attenuation of a
system. You can use the following formula to determine the length of cable you can use.
Maximum cable length (km) = (Rx - Tx) (total attenuation of connectors, splices, etc.
)
cable attenuation (dB/km @ 1300nm)
For example, a fiber optic trunk segment could have the following attenuation
characteristics:
•A cable with an attenuation of 1 dB/km @ 1300 nm.
•Two cable connectors with an attenuation of 0.5 dB each.
•A splice with an attenuation of 0.3 dB.
•Repeater/Fiber hubs with maximum attenuation of 9.3 dB
Maximum cable length = (9.3 dB) (2 0.5 dB + 0.3 dB
)
1 dB/km
For this example, the maximum cable length is 8 km.
Installation declaration
ATTENTION
This equipment shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of the
National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70, or the Canadian Electrical
Code (CEC), C22.1. It is supplied as “open equipment” that is intended to be
mounted on a sub-panel within an enclosure. The suitability of the enclosure
and installed system shall be acceptable to the local “authority having
jurisdiction,” as defined in the NEC, or “authorized person” as defined in the
CEC.

ATTENTION
•You are responsible for obtaining and mounting the 35 x 7.5 mm
metal, top hat rails (DIN EN50022) to be used for mounting the
Repeater Adapter.
•The Repeater Adapter supports non-redundant ControlNet media
communications. For redundant ControlNet media support, a
second Repeater Adapter is required.
•Be sure you install the ControlNet Repeater Adapter at the left end
of a Repeater Adapter and Fiber Module hub.

Step Action
1Orient the Repeater Adapter so the top of the unit is over the top of the DIN
rail.
2Slightly rotate the module to slip its top mounting flange on the top of the DIN
rail.
3Press the module down flush with the DIN rail so its locking tab snaps into
place, securing the module to the rail. If necessary, you can use a
screwdriver to manually retract the lock while pressing the module firmly
against the rail and then releasing it when in position.
4Leave the protective covers on the connectors until you are ready to make
the connections.
5For redundant ControlNet media, repeat this procedure to mount a second
Repeater Adapter on a separate DIN rail.

Wiring
ATTENTION
•To comply with CE Low Voltage Directives, you must use a Safety Extra
Low Voltage (SELV) or Protected Extra Low Voltage (PELV) power supply
(24 Vdc) to power the Repeater Adapter. To comply with the requirements
of the National Electrical Code (NEC) ANSI/NFPA 70 and the UL Listing of
this equipment, you must use a UL Listed Class 2 power supply. To
comply with the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC)
C22.1 and the CSA Certification of this equipment, you must use a CSA
Certified Class 2 power supply.
•Be sure the Repeater Adapter is attached and secured before applying
power to it. Failure to do so may cause damage to the Repeater.
•Do not connect more that four Fiber Modules or exceed the power limit
(1.6 A @ 5 Vdc) to avoid damaging the Repeater and Fiber Modules.
