Installation Instructions
Before Installation
General Equipment Required
1. Figure 1 shows dimensions for TP979A-E Dual Zero
Energy Band Pneumatic Thermostats (“Thermostats”).
Installation requires the following:

2. Thermostats mount to a deep wall box or on a surface.
3. Table 1 describes Thermostat action and the component

Installation
1. If flush mounting, mount Deep WalI Box or standard
utility conduit box in wall as required.
2. Pull tubing through wall or box.
5. Install backplate on box with screws provided (Fig. 4).
3. Attach three-port airhead to tubing (Fig. 2).

Attach backplate to surface with appropriate fasteners.
Use Wall Mounting Ring if required (Fig. 5).

6. Engage bottom tab of manifold in slot on backplate and
push manifold straight onto
backplate and airhead (Fig. 9.

7. Remove dust covers from Thermostats. With heating
Thermostat on left and cooling Thermostat on right,
engage center- and side-mounting ears and push
Thermostats straight onto manifold (Fig. 7).

8. Remove shipping stops from Thermostats. To install
cover, hook two slots on bottom of cover over tabs on
bottom of backplate. Swing cover up and over
thermostats (Fig. 8).

9. Use Thermostat Tool to back setscrews at top of
backplate into holes in top of cover (Fig. 9).

Calibration
General Calibration Check;
After installation, set the thermostats to the desired setpoints
and let the system operate long enough to stabilize. Verify that
the system has stabilized before checking calibration.
Thermostats are factory calibrated and should require only a
bleed-off check to
verify correct operation. The throttling range
is factory set and
should not require adjustment under normal
operating conditions. Figure 10 shows thermostat components.

Throttling Range Adjustment

Use Thermostat Tool to remove cover. Assemble Gage
and Gage Port Needle.
Insert Gage Port Needle in thermostat gage tap.
Slide throttling range (TR) adjustment to desired
position on TR scale.
Mechanically check TR by moving setpoint indicator to
determine difference in
setpoint indication when
branchline pressure reads 3 psi (21 kPa) and 13 psi
(91 kPa).
NOTE: If required, turn calibration screw to adjust TR
into thermostat range.
Reset TR to within
&2 degrees F (HK) of required setting.
Follow applicable procedure under CALIBRATION
CHECK.
Direct-Acting Thermostats (TP970A,
TP971A, D)

Use Test Thermometer to measure actual temperature
of space.
Turn setpoint indicator down to 5 degrees F (2.8K)
below room temperature.
Wait 5 to 10 seconds to allowthermostat to build up
branchline pressure.
Turn setpoint indicator up slowly.
If thermostat begins to bleed off between
1 degree F
(0.6K) and 3 degrees F (1 .7K) below room temperature,
no recalibration is necessary. If recalibration is needed,
see RECALIBRATION.
Reverse-Acting Thermostats (TP970B,
TP971B, E)

Use Test Thermometer to measure actual temperature
of space.
Turn setpoint indicator up to 5 degrees F (2.8K) above
room temperature.
Wait 5 to 10 seconds to allow thermostat to build up
branchline
pressure.
Turn
setpoint indicator down slowly.
If thermostat begins to bleed off between 1 degree F
(0.6K) and 3 degrees IF (1.7K) above room temperature,
no further calibration is necessary. If recalibration is
needed, see
RECALIBRATION.
Recalibration
The procedures in this section assume that a calibration check
has been performed (see CALIBRATION CHECK) and that
the thermostat did not operate correctly.
NOTE:Verify that the adhesive paper dot (see Fig. 10) is in
place before beginning recalibration.

1. Use Thermostat Tool to remove thermostat cover.
Assemble Gage and Gage Port Needle.
2. Insert Gage Port Needle into thermostat gage tap.
3, Turn setpoint adjustment until setpoint indicator reads
measured room temperature.

Single-Temperature Thermostats

1. Turn calibration screw until Gage reads 0 psi.

Turn calibration screw in opposite direction until Gage
reads 8 psi (56 kPa) +1 psi (k7 kPa).

Remove Gage. Set thermostat at desired temperature.
Replace thermostat cover.
General Procedure (All Thermostats) Dual
Temperature Thermostats
With main air at pressure specified for DAY operation,
turn DAY calibration screw until Gage reads 0 psi.
Turn calibration screw in opposite direction until Gage
reads 8 psi (56 kPa) +l psi (k7 kPa).
With main air at pressure specified for NITE operation,
rotate
NITE setpoint dial until setting agrees with
measured temperature.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 using NITE calibration screw.
Remove Gage. Turn setpoint adjustment until setpoint
indicator reads desired room temperature.
Replace thermostat cover.
Cover Information
Installing Cover Inserts
Cover inserts are removable. Covers with setpoint scales ship
with
setpoint slots open (without inserts). The DAY/AUTO
lever slot is open on all covers.
The following cover inserts are available for the setpoint and
DAY/AUTO lever slots at the bottom of the cover:

14004437-001 Insert (satin chrome finish) is used with
14004756-XXX Covers (satin chrome fmish).
-
14004437-002 Insert (beige plastic finish) is used with
14004757-XXX Covers (beige plastic finish).
Painting (Beige Plastic Covers Only)
Beige plastic covers can be painted with recommended paints
before or after cover installation.
Recommended Paints
If
a nonlatex paint is required use Rust-Oleum Enamel (a
fish-oil type enamel). No primer is needed.
If a latex paint is required, use one of the following as a
primer and follow with any latex wall paint:

Sears Anti-Rust Enamel (a soya-alkyd type enamel in a
spray can)
True Value Tru-Test X-O Stain Primer/Sealer Stain
Killer XOS-1 White ( a white-pigmented, shellac
type primer)
Painting Procedure
1, Order the following equipment:
- 14004757-001 cover
- 14004437-002 Cover Insert (optional)

14004065-XXX or 14004066XXX Window from

Remove or add Inserts to Cover as required.
6, Remove liner from adhesive on back of Window, Slide
Wash Cover with mild dish detergent solution and dry
Window into Cover opening (Fig. 11) and press in place.
When Window has been assembled to Cover,
disassembly might damage Window. Therefore, before
installing Window, note the following:

Check that Window display is correct for
job requirements.
Check
Window orientation to cover. Cover setpoint
and DAY/AUTO lever slots should be on the bottom.
If using 14004065-XXX Window (with display),
leave
Window out of cover, paint with approved
paint, and allow to dry. Proceed to Step 6.
If using 14004066-XXX Window (blank with or
without logo), add window to Cover, paint with
approved pair& and allow to dry. Painting is complete,
with paper towel.
