This manual describes the operation of the MLSS meter, HU-200SS SS-90.
Be sure to read this manual before using the product to ensure proper and safe operation of

Safety Precautions
This section provides precautions to enable you to use the product safely and correctly and to
prevent injury and damage. The terms of DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION indicate the
degree of imminency and hazardous situation. Read the precautions carefully as it contains
important safety messages.
WARNING
To connect any load exceeding the contact capacity or any induction load (e.g., a motor or a pump),
be sure to use a power relay exceeding the load rating.
If there is a possibility of a lightning strike, install an arrester on the output side of the converter and on
the side of receiving instruments.
Be sure to ground the grounding terminal (class D grounding).
Electric shock hazard
Be sure to check that no power is supplied before starting work.
The air contained in the covered biological processing tank is of a low oxygen concentration, so there
is the danger of suffocation.
CAUTION
If the instrument's power source is OFF, the C-NC contact is short-circuited. Therefore, be careful
about the connection of any load.
If there is corrosive gas in the installation environment, send clean instrumentation air from the air
purge inlet to the device.
Since the operation of the device at any voltage outside the rated range can cause damage to the
unit, confirm the power supply voltage.
Do not turn the sensor head (tip part). Otherwise, the detector may be damaged.
Do not drop anything in the biological processing tank, such as a MLSS detector, tools, and
holdbacks. Perform your work carefully.
The sensor head is not provided with a protective cover against drop impact.
Handle the sensor head with care when taking it out in air.

Operational Precautions
Use of the equipment in a manner not specified by the manufacturer may impair the protection
provided by the equipment. And it may also reduce equipment performance.
Therefore, exercise the following precautions:
zDo not press any operation key with the tip of your fingernail or with any pointed object.
zDo not use organic solvents or the like.

Overview
Overview of equipment
Thank you very much for purchasing our Industrial-Use HU-200SS SS-90 MLSS Meter.
This Industrial-Use MLSS Meter consists of a HU-200SS converter and a SS-90 immersion
type detector.
With this MLSS Meter, a wide range (from 0 mg/L to 20000 mg/L) of SS contents can be
measured with excellent reproducibility using the near-infrared-radiation transmission method.
Any of the working curves of MLSS, Clay (inorganic mud) and Kaolin may be used as
standard substances of SS.
If “MLSS” is selected for an activated sludge treatment tank, “Clay” for the precipitation
treatment of construction sludge, or “Kaolin” for white mud, a concentration can be obtained
closer to an analyzed value. However, Kaolin has transmission properties that are different
from those of other components and a signal stops changing if the concentration is too high.
So measurement is limited up to 10000 mg/L.
The outputs from the converter are a concentration signal of 4 mA to 20 mA DC, contact
output of two channels, and FAIL contact output. The MLSS detector is connected by five
wires; two for communication, two for the power, and one for the ground potential. Cables may
be extended up to a length of 50 m. The sensor head (tip part) of the SS-90 detector is made
of PFA resin to which dirt does not adhere easily. A light source and detectors are attached in
a face-to-face position to the two sticks of the sensor head. The decay of transmitted light in
the gap of about 7 mm is converted to a concentration. The amount of light from a light source
is monitored by an optical detector for a reference purpose, and variations in the amount of
light are corrected by computing a ratio to a transmitted light signal. A near infrared radiation
LED light source blinks at approx. 10 Hz, and the influence of ambient light is canceled by
taking out the signal of the difference between when the light is ON and OFF.
Since the span sensitivity of the transmission method remains stable, sensitivity correction
over elapsed time is not required. In general, only zero calibration is performed at regular
intervals.
For MLSS measurement, the MLSS detector is attached to an immersion type holder or is
dropped in a pipe. A cleaner for spraying water or air on the holders is available as option. If a
cleaner is installed, the power source that can directly drive solenoid valves, etc. used for
cleaning is output from the converter.
The self-diagnosis capability checks the status of this equipment continuously and outputs an
error signal when any abnormality is found.

JDescription of operation keys
The operation keys are used to toggle between displayed information, to enter any setting
values, or to perform calibration work.
When the indication is blinking, the figures and parameters can be changed.
Use the ▲/▼(UP/DOWN) key to select a blinking value or item, and then press the ENT key.
The setting will flash and then be established.
Note
Do not press any operation key with the tip of your fingernail or any pointed object.

Description of operation modes and menu items
This equipment offers three types of operation modes and four types of menus.
QOperation mode
Meas mode
In this mode, samples are measured, and transmission signals and relays are controlled.
Cal mode
This mode allows you to perform zero calibration and span calibration.
The Cal menu is also used to perform calibration.
Hold mode
This mode allows you to stop measurements to do the processing in the Setup menu, the Cal
menu or the User Check menu.
QMenu
The Meas mode and the Hold mode have the following menus in the lower tier.
For selecting each mode or item, see the corresponding paragraph.

Cal/Control Value Setting menu
This menu allows you to check the calibrated value or to set/change some controlled values
while checking the output.
Hold mode

Prior to operation, this menu allows you to set all the measurement-related parameters, such
as the detector information input and the allocation output.
Cal menu (CAL)
This menu allows you to perform zero calibration and span calibration of the MLSS detector.
User Check menu (USr)
This menu allows you to check the output status, the measured value, and other data. The set
values can be reset to the factory settings.

Installation environment
To ensure the stable use of the HU-200SS SS-90 condition, install the HU-200SS SS-90 in a
location that meets the following requirements.
QInstrument mainframe
zThe location should be well ventilated to prevent build-up of moisture.
zThe ambient temperature should be between −20°C and 55°C.
zThe HU-200SS SS-90 should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
zThe HU-200SS SS-90 should not be exposed to direct high radiation heat.
zThe relative humidity should be 90% or lower.
zThe HU-200SS SS-90 should not be exposed to splashed water or chemical agent.
zThe mechanical vibration in the location should be minimal.
zThe location should have adequate space to allow maintenance and wire connecting
work.
zThe location should be free from dust and corrosive gas.
zThe location should be minimally affected by an electromagnetic fields.
zThe altitude should be no more than 2000 m.
zThe range of fluctuations in supply voltage should be within 100 V to 240 V AC ±10%.
QDetector
zThe location should have adequate space to allow for checking and maintenance of the
detector.
zSpilled water should not adversely affect the location.
zUtilities should be made available for zero water.
zMeasured liquids should be those that will not damage the portion of the detector that
comes into contact with the liquid.
zThe solution being measured should be free from air bubbles.
zMeasured liquid should be adequately agitated to be uniform.
zIf measured liquid is aerated, air bubbles do not directly come in contact with the detector.
Note
If measured liquid flows in only one direction, install and orient the sensor head to the downstream
side.

Procedures for connections
QOpening the converter cover
1. Remove the two rubber-made screw caps located on the upper part of the front of
the converter. Do not lose the removed screw caps that will be reattached after the
work.
2. Open the front cover.
3. Completely loosen the four screw located on the front of the converter. These
screws will not drop off. Make sure that these screws are pushed out forward by
the force of a spring.
4. Open the front case of the converter.

For wire-connecting work, pull forward and raise the black resin-made terminal cover that is
covering the power terminal, or remove the terminal cover by detaching a hinge.
Note
zThe screws on the front case and the terminal block are structurally prevented from dropping off.
zTo attach a round-shaped terminal, turn the screw counterclockwise until the screw is floated.
zIf the outside of the case is wet, wipe off all water before opening the case.
