Essential Operator Skills
•The operator must be the trained in the safe use of the machine.
•The operator must be experienced in handling the animals to be shorn.
Electrical Safety
•Use only on a 220-240 volt AC 50 Hz electricity supply.
•Use a Circuit Breaker (RCD) with this machine.
•Use a 3 amp fuse in the plug.
•Never insert the plug into a damaged socket.
•Keep the electric lead up, out of the way of animals.
•Switch off and unplug the machine before changing the comb or cutter and before
any maintenance.
•Never use the machine if you suspect it of being in contact with liquids.
•Check the machine body and electrical cable for defects before use.
Operation
•Switch. Position I - the power is ON. Position O – the power is OFF.
•Switch to off (position O) before plugging into, or disconnecting from, the Power
supply.
•Always disconnect the power supply before changing combs and cutters.
•Never wrap the power cable around the machine.
•Keep away from all liquids.
•Never shear wet animals.
•Do not use combs with missing or broken teeth.
•Look out for wire, etc, in the fleece: remove before shearing.
•Keep clear of ear tags.
•Keep children away from the working area and store the machine out of their
reach.
•Sharpen combs and cutters on a specialist grinder.
Fitting the comb and cutter
•Loosen the tension nut, slacken off the comb screws and remove the old comb and
cutter.
•Make sure the new comb and cutter are clean.
•The sharp surface of the cutter must sit on the sharp side of the comb.
•Place the new cutter in the chicken feet’s carrier cones.
•Push the new comb between the loosened screws. Semi-tighten the comb screws.
•Move the comb until the sharp surface of the comb projects 1.2mm – 2.0mm
beyond the tips of the cutter.
•Note: the cutter must not overhang the hollows on the end of the comb teeth.
•Tighten the combs screws. Tighten the tension nut until the cutter is pressed
against the
comb and you can feel a slight resistance.
•Always check that both conical pins are still in the holes in the cutter, before using.
•All persons using this machine must be trained in its safe use. Operating
instructions should
be kept in the storage case and accessible at all times.
Safety Feature
•This machine incorporates a sacrificial gear which is designed to strip in the event
of the machine jamming or encountering an obstruction, e.g. wire in wool, improper
comb setup (see illustration) or lack of oiling.

Tension Adjustment before Shearing
•While the machine is still switched off, ensure that the conical pins on the chicken
feet sit exactly into the positioning holes in the cutter.
•Tighten the tension nut until resistance is felt (illustration 1). Do not over-tighten.
•If it is not cutting properly at the very start of shearing add a little more tension.
•Do not slacken off tension while the machine is running.
•If tension is not sufficient, hair may collect between the comb and cutter.
Lubrication
•At least every 3 minutes. Place a few drops of oil across the combs and cutters.
•Every 10 minutes place a few drops of oil into the lubrication holes on the
shearing head (illustration 2, item 2).
•Lack of oiling causes the head to overheat, and causes excessive wear.
•Inadequately oiled combs and cutters will get hot and go blunt quickly.
•NOTE: The Zipper does not slow down or sound differently when in
need of oil…so it must be oiled frequently.

Illustration 2 - Oiling
Turn clock-wise to tighten Points 1 & 3 – oil every 3 minutes
Point 2 – oil every 10 minutes
When to Change Combs and Cutters
•On clean wool, the cutter can be changed more often than the comb (e.g. use 2
cutters to one comb). This must be done while the comb is still cutting cleanly.
•Replace both comb and cutter when they are not cutting cleanly.
Cleaning the Air Filter
•Clean the air filter with a dry soft brush frequently.
•The machine must never be operated without the air filter element.
Storage
•Store the machine in a clean and dry place, out of the reach of children.

Care of Combs and Cutters
•Wash used combs and cutters each day.
•Left dirty, the salt in sheep grease, and dirt, eats into the metal.
•Once pitted or rusted, it is impossible to get sharp edges again when sharpening.
This pulls on the wool, unsettling the sheep, and makes shearing slower and more
difficult.
Cleaning
•Wash blunt combs/cutters after shearing each day.
•Use very hot soapy water.
•Brush to remove all grease, dirt and oil. Rinse in hot water.
•Dry immediately. Store in a dry place.
To Post
•Wrap the clean, dry combs and cutters together securely, covering all sharp points,
and preventing any movement.
•Put in a Jiffy bag, or box. Include your name, address and phone number.
•Ask for a ‘Certificate of Posting’ at the Post Office – it is free.
Note: Combs and cutters cannot be sharpened unless free from all dirt and oil.
