Arrangement and number of connectors may vary by model.
The monitor connector on the system board is inactive if an AGP expansion card is installed in
the computer. The monitor must be connected to the monitor connector on the installed APG
card for proper operation. If the monitor is not connect to the correct connector, it will not
function properly.

Easy Access Keyboard
Easy Access Keyboard Components

Function Keys Perform special functions depending on the software application
being used.

Easy Access Buttons Provide quick access to specific Internet destinations.

Editing Keys Includes the following: Insert, Home, Page Up, Delete, End,
and Page Down.

Status Lights Indicate the status of the computer and keyboard settings
(NumLock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock).
5 Numeric Keys Work like a calculator keypad.
6 Arrow Keys Used to navigate through a document or Web site. These keys
allow you to move left, right, up, and down, using the keyboard
instead of the mouse.
7 Application Key* Used (like the right mouse button) to open pop-up menus in a
Microsoft Office application. May perform other functions in other
software applications.

Windows Logo Key* Used to open the Start menu in Microsoft Windows. Used in
combination with other keys to perform other functions.

Ctrl Key Used in combination with another key; its effect depends on the
application software you are using.

Customizing the Easy Access Buttons
All Easy Access buttons can be reprogrammed to open any software application or
data file on the hard drive, or any Internet address.
To reprogram the Easy Access buttons, complete the following steps:
1. Double-click the keyboard icon in the notification area (lower right corner) of the
Windows taskbar. The Keyboard Properties dialog box is displayed.
2. Click the Help button on the Keyboard Properties dialog box for instructions.
Windows Logo Key
Use the Windows Logo key in combination with other keys to perform certain
functions available in the Windows operating system. Refer to the “ Easy Access
Keyboard” section to identify the Windows Logo key.
Windows Logo Key Functions
Windows Logo Key Displays or hides the Start menu.
Windows Logo Key + dDisplays the Desktop.
Windows Logo Key + mMinimizes all open applications.
Shift + Windows Logo Key + m Undoes Minimize All.
Windows Logo Key + eLaunches My Computer.
Windows Logo Key + fLaunches Find Document.
Windows Logo Key + Ctrl + f Launches Find Computer.
Windows Logo Key + F1 Launches Windows Help.
Windows Logo Key + lLocks the computer if you are connected to a network
domain, or allows you to switch users if you are not
connected to a network domain.
Windows Logo Key + rLaunches the Run dialog box.
Windows Logo Key + uLaunches the Utility Manager.
Windows Logo Key + Tab Activates the next Taskbar button.

Special Mouse Functions
Most software applications support the use of a mouse. The functions assigned to
each mouse button depend on the software applications you are using.
Serial Number Location
Each computer has a unique serial number that is located on the top cover or the back
panel of the computer. Keep this number available for use when contacting customer
service for assistance.

Serviceability Features
The Microtower computer includes features that make it easy to upgrade and service.
Installation Sequence
It is very important that you follow this sequence of steps to ensure the proper
installation of any optional equipment. For more information about Computer Setup,
refer to the Computer Setup (F10) Utility Guide. If the computer is powered on, turn
it off and disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from electrical shock
and/or hot surfaces, be sure to disconnect the power cord from the wall
outlet, and allow the internal system components to cool before touching.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electrical shock, fire, or damage to the
equipment, do not plug telecommunications/telephone connectors into
the network interface controller (NIC) receptacles.
CAUTION: Static electricity can damage the electronic components of
the computer or optional equipment. Before beginning these procedures,
ensure that you are discharged of static electricity by briefly touching a
grounded metal object. Refer to Appendix E “Electrostatic Discharge” in this
guide for additional information on preventing electrostatic discharge.

1. Open the computer by removing the access panel. See the procedure in
“Removing the Computer Access Panel and Front Bezel” for details.
2. Install any optional equipment. See the applicable sections of this guide or the
documentation provided with the optional equipment for instructions.
3. Replace the computer access panel.
4. Turn on the monitor, computer, and any devices you want to test.
5. Reconfigure the computer, if necessary. Refer to the Computer Setup (F10)
Utility Guide on the Documentation Library CD for instructions about using
Computer Setup.
6. If you normally lock the Smart Cover Lock, use Computer Setup to relock the
lock and enable the Smart Cover Sensor. Refer to the Desktop Management
Guide on the Documentation Library CD for more information about the Smart
Cover Lock and Smart Cover Sensor.

Removing the Computer Access Panel and
Front Bezel
To remove the computer access panel:
1. If you have locked the Smart Cover Lock, use Computer Setup to unlock the lock.
Refer to the Desktop Management Guide on the DocumentionLibrary CD for
more information about the Smart Cover Lock.
2. Shut down the operating system properly, then power off the computer and any
external devices.
3. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet 1and the compuer 2, and
disconnect any external devices.

CAUTION: Before removing the computer access panel, ensure that the
computer is turned off and that the power cord is disconnected from
the electrical outlet.

4. Loosen the captive thumbscrew 1that secures the access panel to the computer
chassis..
5. Slide the computer access panel back 2about 1 inch (2.5cm), then lift it off the
unit.

6. To remove the front bezel, gently press in on the two bottom tabs on the left side
of the bezel 1so that they release from the chassis. Then press in on the upper
tab on the left side of the bezel 2so that it release from the chassis. The bezel
will rotate out slightly from left to right.
CAUTION: Do not over-rotate or try to pull the bezel off at this point,
otherwise you may break the remaining hocks on the inside of the bezel.

7. Press down on the upper right corner of the bezel to release the hook that secures
the top of the bezel to the chassis 1. Continue to rotate the bezel, then push the
bezel to the left to rotate the bezel off the chassis from the left to right 2.

Installing Additional Memory
The computer comes with Double Data Rate-Synchronous Dynamic Random access
Memory (DDR-SDRAM) Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMMs).
DIMMs
The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with industry-standard
DIMMs. These memory module slots are populated with at least one preinstalled
memory module. To achieve the maximum memory support, you may be required to
replace the preinstalled DIMM with a higher capacity DIMM.
IF you are adding a second DIMM, it is recommended that you add a DIMM
identical to the preinstalled DIMM in order to achieve a higher performing dual
channel mode. The system board must be populated with DIMMs of identical type
and speed for the system to operate in dual channel mode.
DDR-SDRAM DIMMS
For proper system operation, if the computer supports DDR-SDRAM DIMMs, the
DIMMs must be industry-standard 168-pin, unbuffered PC1600 200 MHz- or PC
2700 333 MHz- compliant CAS Latency 2.5 (CL = 2.5) 2.5 volt DDR-SDRAM
DIMMs. They must also contain the mandatory Joint Electronic Device Engineering
Council (JEDEC) Serial Presence Detect (SPD) information. DIMMs constructed
with x4 SDRAM are not supported; the system will not start using unsupported
DIMMs.

Installing DDR-SDRAM DIMMs
CAUTION: The memory module sockets have gold metal contacts. When upgrading
the memory, it is important to use memory modules with gold metal contacts to
prevent corrosion and/or oxidation resulting from having incompatible metals in
contact with each other.
CAUTION: Static electricity can damage the electronic components of the computer
or optional cards. Before beginning these procedures, ensure that you are
discharged of static electricity by briefly touching a grounded metal object. Refer to
Appendix E “Electrostatic Discharge” for more information.
CAUTION: When handling a memory module, be careful not to touch any of the
contacts. Doing so may damage the module.
1. If you have locked the Smart Cover Lock, use Computer Setup to
unlock the lock.
2. Shut down the operating system properly, then power off the computer and any
external devices.
3. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet.
4. Remove the computer access panel and located the memory module sockets.

5. Open both latches of the memory module socket 1, and insert the memory
module into the socket 2. Begin by installing a module into the socket nearest the
preinstalled module, and install the modules following the numerical order of the
sockets.
Installing a DIMM
A memory module can be installed in only one way. Match the notch on the module
with the tab on the memory socket.
6. Push the module down into the socket, ensuring that the module is fully inserted
and properly seated. Make sure the latches are in the closed position 3.
7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for any additional modules that you want to install.
8. Complete the procedure described in “Reassembling the Computer” section of this
chapter.

Replacing or Upgrading a Drive
The computer supports up to six drives that may be installed in various
configurations.
This section describes the procedure for replacing or upgrading the storage drives. A
Torx screwdriver is needed to replace the guide screws on a drive.
CAUTION: Make sure you back up your personal files on the hard drive to an
external storage device, such as a CD, before removing the hard drive. Failure to do
so will result in data loss. After replacing the primary hard drive, you will need to run
the Restore Plus! CD to load the Compaq factory-installed files.
