Removing and Replacing the Cover
Removing and Replacing the Cover
WARNING For your safety, never remove the PC Workstation’s cover without first
removing the power cord from the power outlet, and any connection to
a telecommunications network. Always replace the cover on the
PC Workstation before switching it on again.
Removing the Cover
1Switch off the display and computer.
2Disconnect all power cables and any LAN or telecommunications
cable.
3If necessary, unlock the cover using the key on the back panel, and
remove any floppy diskettes from the floppy drive.
4Push the two latches on the sides of the computer upwards.
5Grasp the cover on both sides of the computer, and carefully slide it
forwards and off the computer.

Replacing the Cover
1Ensure that you have installed all your accessories and that all
internal cables are properly connected and safely routed.
2Lower the cover completely onto the computer (aligning the back of
the cover with the inner back edge of the PC Workstation’s case),
and firmly slide it backwards into place. Ensure that the retaining
latches click into position.
3If required, lock the cover using the key provided.
4Reconnect all the power cables and telecommunications cables.

Moving the Power Supply
1Disconnect the computer’s power cord and any LAN cable.
2Remove the computer’s cover (refer to page 3).
3Lift the front of the power supply up and move it forwards to
disengage the hinge on the rear.
4Rotate the power supply and lay it upside down on the drive unit.
WARNING To avoid electrical shock, do not open the power supply. There are no
user-serviceable parts inside the power supply unit.

1Check that all internal cables are safely routed.
2Rotate the power supply into the computer. Tilt the back of the
power supply unit until it engages with the computer’s case. Adjust
the power supply’s cable to ease replacement of the unit.
3Carefully lower the front of the power supply completely into
the computer, until it clicks into position.

Installing Memory
Main Memory Modules
If you need more main memory to run your application software, you
can install up to 768 MB of memory in three 100 MHz DIMM slots.
Main memory upgrades are available in single non-buffered 32 MB,
64 MB and 128 MB or 256 MB SDRAM memory modules.
CAUTION Static electricity can damage electronic components. Turn off all
equipment. Do not let your clothes touch the accessory.
To equalize the static electricity, rest the accessory bag on top of the
power supply while you are removing the accessory from the bag.
Handle the accessory as little as possible and with car

1Disconnect the computer’s power cord and any LAN or
telecommunications cable.
2Remove the computer’s cover (refer to page 3).
3Press the retaining buttons on each side of the HP UltraFlow airflow
guide and remove it from the PC Workstation’s case.

6Firmly press the memory module completely into the connector
until the retaining clips click into position.
7Repeat this procedure for each additional memory module you want
to install.
8Install any other accessories if necessary, then replace all units and
reconnect all cables and power cords. Replace the cover (refer to
page 4).
9Check the HP Summary Screen to verify the new configuration.
Video Adapter
Accessories Available
from Other Sources
Additional accessories, including a video MPEG module, are available
for your video adapter. However, these accessories cannot be ordered
from HP. Contact your dealer for more details about these accessories.
NOTE A video MPEG module is only available if your PC is equipped with the
Matrox Millennium G200 graphics accelerator.

Connecting Devices
If you add an IDE Zip drive, hard disk drive, CD-ROM drive, CD-RW
drive, or tape drive, you need to connect it to power and data cables.
The data cables and connectors provided are shown below:

Before Installing an
IDE Hard Disk
Refer to the drive’s installation guide to see if you must set jumpers or
if there is a special installation procedure to follow.
Before Installing a
SCSI Hard Disk
If you are installing an additional SCSI drive, you should assign an
unused SCSI ID to this accessory. SCSI IDs range from 0 to 15 for Ultra
wide 16-bit SCSI. SCSI ID 0 is used by the first SCSI hard disk drive and
SCSI ID 7 is reserved for the integrated SCSI controller (the default for
narrow and wide SCSI devices).
NOTE You do not need to select a SCSI ID for Plug and Play SCSI hard disks
(SCSI hard disks that support the SCAM protocol).
You should assign an unused SCSI ID to the second SCSI hard disk
drive (for example, SCSI ID 1).
The SCSI ID is usually configured with jumpers on the SCSI hard disk
drive. Refer to the installation guide supplied with the drive for
information on selecting a SCSI ID.
Some internal SCSI disk drives may have termination resistors that
must be removed or disabled before installation in your computer.
Refer to the drive’s installation guide for more details and to see if
there is a special installation procedure to follow.

Installing a Hard Disk Drive in an Internal Shelf
NOTE The internal shelves can house one hard disk drive that is up to
1.6 inches in height, and one hard disk drive of up to 1 inch in height.
1Disconnect the computer’s power cord and any LAN or
telecommunications cable.
2Remove the computer’s cover (refer to page 3).
3Remove the four (outer) retaining screws from the top of the hard
drive unit.
4Lift the hard drive unit partly out of the PC Workstation’s case and
disconnect the data and power connectors from the existing drive.
5Remove the hard drive unit from the PC Workstation’s case.
6Place the hard drive unit carefully on a flat surface.
Take care when handling the hard disk drive and ensure that it is
placed on an anti-static bag whenever you set it down.

7If you want to install the new hard drive in the shelf of the existing
drive, remove the four retaining screws from the top of the hard
drive’s unit and remove the drive.
8Slide the hard disk drive(s) into the required shelf. Ensure that the
drive’s data and power connectors are facing the right way.

9For a drive in the upper shelf, tighten the four retaining screws on
top of the hard drive unit.
For a drive in the lower shelf, use the four spare screws from the
top (center) of the hard drive unit, to secure the hard disk drive on
either side.
10 Connect the power and the data cables to the rear of the drives.
(The connectors are shaped to go in one way only.)

11 Lower the hard drive unit back into the PC Workstation’s case and
tighten the four (outer) retaining screws.
12 Install any other accessories before completing the installation.
13 Follow the instructions below to complete the installation.
Completing the Installation of a Hard Disk Drive
When a New SCSI
Hard Disk Drive Is
Installed
1Switch on the computer.
2To enter the SCSI Configuration Utility press F6 when the message

during the PC Workstation’s start-up routine.
3Verify or modify the configuration of your new SCSI hard disk drive.
For more information on configuring a SCSI hard disk drive, refer
to the SCSI Administrator’s Guide available on HP’s Web site at

4When configuration is complete, exit the SCSI Configuration Utility
and re-boot the computer to save any changes.

When an IDE Drive
Is Installed
1Switch on the computer.
2To display the device in POST, press Esc while the PC Workstation
re-starts.
3If an error message appears, follow the instructions provided by the
Error Message Utility.
4To verify the configuration of your hard disk drive, press F2 to enter
Setup when prompted. Once in Setup, select the Advanced menu,
then the IDE Devices submenu. In the Primary Master item, check that the
details for the device have been correctly detected by the Setup
program.
5Press F3 to save and exit Setup.
Refer to the operating system documentation for information on
formatting a drive.
NOTE If an IDE drive is removed, switch on the computer. The system BIOS
will detect that the device is missing. Press F4 to confirm that you want
to remove the device. The system configuration will be updated
automatically.
Installing a Drive in a Front-Access Shelf
These instructions explain how to install a drive (such as a floppy disk
drive, CD-ROM drive, CD-RW drive, or tape drive) in one of the front-
access drive shelves. You should also refer to the manual supplied with
the drive for any additional installation instructions.

10 Remove the plastic panel from the cover by pulling the panel from
the left and unhinging its right-hand side. Store the panel in a safe
place.
11 Install any other accessories before replacing the cover and
completing the installation.
12 Follow the instructions below to complete the installation.
Completing the Installation of a Drive
When an IDE CD-ROM

1Switch on the computer and press F2 when F2 Setup appears.
2In the Setup program, select the Advanced menu, the IDE Devices
submenu. Check that the CD-ROM drive has been detected on the
IDE channel.
3Press F3 to save and exit the program.

Installing Accessory Boards

The PC Workstation has the following accessory board slots (from left
to right):
•Slot AT 2 for full-length 16-bit ISA boards
•Slot AT 1/PCI 4 for either a 16-bit ISA board or a full-length 32-bit
PCI board
•Slot PCI 3 for a full-length 32-bit PCI board
•Slot PCI 2 for a full-length 32-bit PCI board
•Slot PCI 1 for a full-length 32-bit PCI board
•Slot AGP for the video adapter board.
Installing the Board
NOTE PCI boards are configured automatically when installed in the
PC Workstation.
1Disconnect the computer’s power cord and any LAN connection or
telecommunications cable.
2Remove the computer’s cover (refer to page 3).
3Find an empty accessory board slot. Identify the location of the slot
type you want to use (ISA or PCI).
Some boards may have preferred locations and special installation
instructions detailed in their manuals.
