Customer self repair
HPE products are designed with many Customer Self Repair (CSR) parts to minimize repair time and allow for greater
flexibility in performing defective parts replacement. If during the diagnosis period HPE (or HPE service providers or
service partners) identifies that the repair can be accomplished by the use of a CSR part, HPE will ship that part directly to
you for replacement. There are two categories of CSR parts:
• Mandatory—Parts for which customer self repair is mandatory. If you request HPE to replace these parts, you will be
charged for the travel and labor costs of this service.
• Optional—Parts for which customer self repair is optional. These parts are also designed for customer self repair. If,
however, you require that HPE replace them for you, there may or may not be additional charges, depending on the
type of warranty service designated for your product.
NOTE: Some HPE parts are not designed for customer self repair. In order to satisfy the customer warranty, HPE requires
that an authorized service provider replace the part. These parts are identified as "No" in the Illustrated Parts Catalog.
Based on availability and where geography permits, CSR parts will be shipped for next business day delivery. Same day or
four-hour delivery may be oered at an additional charge where geography permits. If assistance is required, you can call
the HPE Technical Support Center and a technician will help you over the telephone. HPE specifies in the materials
shipped with a replacement CSR part whether a defective part must be returned to HPE. In cases where it is required to
return the defective part to HPE, you must ship the defective part back to HPE within a defined period of time, normally
five (5) business days. The defective part must be returned with the associated documentation in the provided shipping
material. Failure to return the defective part may result in HPE billing you for the replacement. With a customer self repair,
HPE will pay all shipping and part return costs and determine the courier/carrier to be used.

Parts only warranty service
Your HPE Limited Warranty may include a parts only warranty service. Under the terms of parts only warranty service,
HPE will provide replacement parts free of charge.
For parts only warranty service, CSR part replacement is mandatory. If you request HPE to replace these parts, you will be
charged for the travel and labor costs of this service.

Safety considerations
Before performing service procedures, review all the safety information.
Preventing electrostatic discharge
To prevent damaging the system, be aware of the precautions you need to follow when setting up the system or handling
parts. A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor may damage system boards or other static-
sensitive devices. This type of damage may reduce the life expectancy of the device.
• Avoid hand contact by transporting and storing products in static-safe containers.
• Keep electrostatic-sensitive parts in their containers until they arrive at static-free workstations.
• Place parts on a grounded surface before removing them from their containers.
• Avoid touching pins, leads, or circuitry.
• Always be properly grounded when touching a static-sensitive component or assembly.
Warnings and cautions
To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to equipment, heed all warnings and cautions listed.

WARNING:
• Be sure to bolt the rack to the floor by using the concrete anchor kit.
• Extend rack leveling feet to the floor.
• Rest the full weight of the rack on the leveling feet.
• In multiple rack installations, properly couple the racks together.
• Extend only one component at a time. If more than one component is extended, the rack might become
unstable.
• Observe local occupational health and safety requirements and guidelines for manual material handling.
• Use a lift or get help to lift and stabilize the product during installation or removal, especially when the product
is not fastened to the rails. You must adequately support the chassis during installation and removal. The
chassis weighs more than 8165 kg (18000 lb), so at least four people must lift the chassis into the rack
together. An additional person may be required to help align the chassis if the chassis is installed higher than
chest level.
• Install the chassis starting from the bottom of the rack, and then work your way up the rack.
• To reduce the risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the drives and the internal system components to
cool before touching them.
• To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equipment, never reach inside the chassis while the
system is powered up.
• Perform service on system components only as instructed in the user documentation.
• Always be sure that the equipment is properly grounded and that you follow proper grounding procedures
before beginning any installation procedure. Improper grounding can result in ESD damage to electronic
components.
CAUTION: When performing non-hot-plug operations, you must power down the chassis and/or the system.
However, it may be necessary to leave the chassis powered up when performing other operations, such as hot-plug
installations or troubleshooting.

Powering on and o the system
Powering up the D6020
NOTE: Always power up the D6020 first, and then the node.
Prerequisites
All components of the D6020 are installed. For example, disk drives should be installed so that the connected host
controllers can identify and configure them at power up.
Procedure
1. Complete node hardware installation and cabling. For more information, see the documentation for your specific node.
2. Connect the SAS cables and power cords to the D6020.
3. Press and hold the Power On/Standby button.
Observe the system power LED and system fans. After the D6020 powers up, the system power LED illuminates solid
green and the system fans spin to a high speed, and then spin down to a low speed.
4. Note the status LEDs on the I/O module and do one of the following:
a. If the first LED for both SAS port LEDs and the middle I/O module LED are illuminated green and are not blinking,
continue to step 5.
b. If the LEDs are not green or are blinking, resolve the issue, and then continue to step 5. For more information, see
Troubleshooting.
5. Power up the nodes. For more information, see the documentation for your specific node.
Powering down the D6020
Be sure that the partner nodes are the first units to be powered down and the last to be powered back up. Taking this
precaution ensures that the system and the OS are shut down in an orderly manner.
IMPORTANT: If installing a hot-plug device, it is not necessary to power down the D6020.
Procedure
1. Power down the partner nodes. For more information, see the documentation for your specific node.
2. Press and hold the Power On/Standby button for approximately 4 seconds.
Both disk drive drawers are powered down.
When the D6020 is powered down, note that all LEDs, except for the Power On/Standby button LED, turn o. When
in Standby mode, the Power On/Standby button is amber. When the entire system is fully powered o, all LEDs are
o.

Removal and replacement procedures
Required tools
The following items are required for some procedures:
• T-8 Torx screwdriver
• T-10 Torx screwdriver
• T-15 Torx screwdriver
• Philips screwdriver
Extending the disk drive drawer
CAUTION: To prevent improper cooling and thermal damage, do not operate the D6020 for more than 10 minutes
with the drawer open. If the drawer is extended for more than 10 minutes while the system is powered on, the
system could shut down unexpectantly. This shutdown can occur even though internal fans maximize their speed
to cool down the system.
Prerequisites
• Verify that all I/O bays contain either an I/O module or an I/O blank. If I/O bays are empty, then the disk drive drawer
does not open.
• Verify that the I/O modules or I/O blanks are fully seated and their handles are in the locked position. If I/O modules or
I/O blanks are not fully seated with their handles in the locked position, then the disk drive drawer does not open.
Procedure
1. Extend the disk drive drawer.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment:
• Do not extend the disk drive drawers beyond the supporting surface when the unit is not installed in a rack.
• Ensure that only one disk drive drawer is extended at a time.

CAUTION: To prevent improper cooling and thermal damage, do not operate the D6020 unless all bays are
populated with either a disk drive or drive blank. Remove a blank only if a drive is ready to install or the D6020 is
powered down.
Procedure
1. Extend the disk drive drawer.
2. Remove the disk drive or drive blank.

Replacing a disk drive
CAUTION: To prevent improper cooling and thermal damage, do not extend the disk drive drawer for more than 10
minutes. Do not operate the D6020 unless all bays are populated with either a component or a blank. Remove a
drive only if another drive is ready to be installed or the D6020 is powered down.
Prerequisites
• Verify the status of the drive to be replaced by reviewing the disk drive LEDs (see Disk drive LEDs) and disk drive
LED combinations (see Disk drive LED combinations).
• Confirm the RAID status and configuration to be sure that data loss does not occur if the drive is removed. For more
information, see the HPE Smart Storage Administrator User Guide on the HPESC website.
• Be sure that the replacement disk drive is the same interface and the same or larger capacity.
Procedure
1. Extend the disk drive drawer.
CAUTION: To avoid data loss, be sure that the drives are labeled and returned to the same bays from which
they were removed.
2. As appropriate, remove the drive blank or disk drive.

3. To install a disk drive or drive blank:
a. Fully extend the disk drive lever.
b. Push the disk drive or drive blank all the way into the drive bay.
c. Close the lever.
Removing and replacing the D6020 fan
IMPORTANT: Remove the power cord before removing the fan (in accordance with the power cord label on power
cord part number 142263-004).

Prerequisites
• Replace only one fan at a time. Fans are N+1 redundant.
• Verify that all other fans are installed for proper redundancy and that their LEDs are green before replacing a fan.
• Verify the status of the fan to be replaced by reviewing rear panel LEDs and buttons (see Front panel LEDs and
buttons).
• Make sure that your configuration can support your actions. If the proper redundancy is not in place, power down the
D6020 before beginning this procedure.
• For best cooling practices, do not operate the enclosure for more than 10 minutes when:
◦The system is powered on
◦More than one component or blank is removed
• After removing an active component, promptly replace it with a blank or the appropriate component.
Procedure
1. Make sure that the disk drive drawer is closed.
2. Remove the fan.
3. To replace the fan:
a. Insert the fan in to the fan bay.
b. Push until the fan locks into place.
Removing and replacing the hot-pluggable I/O module
Prerequisites
• Verify that the disk drive drawer is closed and the software solution indicates that the module is safe to remove.
• Verify the status of the I/O module to be replaced by reviewing rear panel LEDs and buttons (see Rear panel
components).
• For best cooling practices, do not operate the enclosure for more than 10 minutes when:

◦The system is powered on
◦More than one component or blank is removed
• Be sure that your configuration can support your actions. If the proper redundancy is not in place, power down the
D6020 before beginning this procedure.
WARNING: Removing an I/O module if a datapath is not redundant can result in data outage.
Procedure
1. Disconnect the SAS cables.
2. Release the I/O handle by pushing the I/O handle down until it ejects the I/O module, and then remove the I/O module.
3. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure. Be sure that the I/O module is fully seated and the I/O
module handle is in the locked position.
Removing and replacing the I/O module blank
Prerequisites
For best cooling practices, do not operate the enclosure for more than 10 minutes when:
• The system is powered on
• More than one component or blank is removed
Procedure
1. Remove the I/O module blank as shown in the following image.

2. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure.
Be sure that the I/O module blank is fully seated and the I/O module blank handle is in the locked position.
Removing and replacing the D6020 power supply
Prerequisites
• Replace only one power supply at a time. Power supplies are N+1 redundant.
• Ensure that all other power supplies are installed and their LEDs are illuminated green.
• Verify the status of the power supply to be replaced by reviewing rear panel LEDs and buttons (see Rear panel
components).
• Be sure that your configuration can support your actions. If the proper redundancy is not in place, power down the
D6020 before beginning this procedure.
Procedure
1. Disconnect the AC power cord.
2. Remove the component as shown in the following figure.

3. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure.
Removing and replacing the D6020 power block
Procedure
1. Power down the D6020 (see Powering down the D6020).
2. Disconnect all cables.
3. Remove all power supplies (see Removing and replacing the D6020 power supply).
4. Remove all fan modules (see Removing and replacing the D6020 fan).
5. Remove all I/O modules (see Removing and replacing the hot-pluggable I/O module).
6. Release the disk drive drawers:
a. Pull down the handle on the front of the drawer, but do not extend the drawer.
b. Push up and hold the two release mechanisms on the I/O bays.

c. Move the drawer forward about 15 cm (6 in).
7. Disengage the power block:
a. Loosen the screw securing the power block to the chassis (1).
b. Press down on the release lever (2).
c. Slowly pull out the power block (3) 254 cm to 508 cm (1 in to 2 in).
Do not remove the power block any further because the cable management arm is still attached.

8. Disengage the cable management arm lock from each hard drive drawer:
a. Pull the mechanism up and then toward the rear of the chassis to disengage it from the locking plate.
b. Slide the cable management arm o both locking plates.
9. Slowly remove the power block.
The signal and power cables are still attached.

10. While supporting the power block, disconnect the signal and power cables on each side of the power block.
11. To replace the component, reverse the removal procedure.
12. Power on the system as follows:
a. Make sure that only the primary I/O module is inserted.
b. Power on the system.
c. Wait until the primary I/O module is ready (less than 1 minute).
d. Insert the secondary I/O module.
