IMPORTANT:
Included with your storage system is the HP StorageWorks Storage System Recovery DVD. This DVD
is used to restore the system to factory defaults. Keep this DVD in a safe place.

Software Target and HP X1000 Automated Storage Manager (HP ASM) included.
The HP StorageWorks X3000 Network Storage System comes preinstalled with the Microsoft
Windows® Storage Server™ 2008 Enterprise x64 Edition operating system with Microsoft iSCSI
Software Target and a Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) license included.
Automated Storage Manager version 3.8.0
Automated Storage Manager (HP ASM) is a storage hosting and management tool that simplifies
hosting application and shared folder storage, data protection, managing storage, and monitoring
storage. Designed for IT generalists, HP ASM software enables you to create, migrate, manage, and
protect shared storage without the need for storage expertise. It includes tools to quickly and easily
migrate and manage data using automated best practice settings.
NOTE:
HP X1000 Automated Storage Manager is preinstalled on all HP StorageWorks X1000 Network
Storage Systems. HP ASM is not supported on HP X3000 Network Storage Systems.
Benefits of using ASM include the following:
•ASM can be installed on existing ProLiant Storage Server 64–bit platforms
•File share creation and scheduled snapshots
•Hosting block-based storage for Exchange, SQL, and other applications
•Support for backup of file shares or application stores to disk, tape, or other removable media
using application-aware snapshots (HP Data Protector Express required)
•Streamlined data replication for file shares or application storage (HP StorageWorks Storage
Mirroring required)
The following limitations apply to ASM:
•No SAN Gateway support
•No clustering support

•No MSA 2000 or EVA support
•No support for creating or growing LUNs larger than 2 terabytes
•No dynamic disk support
•No IPV6 support
HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software update
An evaluation version of the HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software version 5.1 is available
for all HP StorageWorks X1000 and X3000 Network Storage Systems. You can install the 5.1 version
from the HP Web site (http://www.hp.com/) for your evaluation. If you have already licensed a
previous version, the license includes 1 year of free upgrades. When prompted, enter the key evaluation
to begin the evaluation period if you have not already purchased a license.
Server Manager includes a link to install HP StorageWorks Storage Mirroring Software version 5.1.
Issues and workarounds
The following issues and workarounds apply to HP X1000 and X3000 Network Storage Systems
applications and utilities. For issues and workarounds applying to HP Automated Storage Manager
and HP Data Protector Express software, see the HP StorageWorks Automated Storage Manager
release notes (part number 5697-8166).
Server Manager
This section describes issues related to using Server Manager.
Issue: The pie chart under Server Manager > Storage Management may indicate a larger amount of disk
space than actually exists
This issue may occur if both of the following are true:
•A hard quota is set and enabled on the root folder of one or more volumes.
•A volume with a hard quota on the root folder also has Single Instance Storage (SIS) enabled.
This is due to an interoperability issue between directory quotas and SIS.
Workaround: Disable the hard quota on the root folder of the volume, or change the hard quota to be a soft
quota.
Issue: The storage system and Microsoft MMC quota plug-in fail when creating a new quota
When creating a new quota using the Server Manager, the creation may fail with the event log message: A
File Server Resource Manager configuration file or import-export file is
corrupted. If the corrupt file is a configuration file, it is required that the
system or volume be restored from backup. If the file is an import-export file,
export the items again and retry the operation without editing the file contents.
Workaround: If the volume has existing quotas, recover the volume from backup. If the volume does not have
existing quotas, use an Administrator login to rename the <Drive Letter>:\System Volume
Information\SRM\quota.xml file and try to create the quotas again. Recover from backup if the creation
continues to fail.

Issue: Creating quotas on a newly-installed cluster might cause File Server Resource Manger to fail with an
unexpected error
After creating a cluster, if you try to create a quota using the Server Manager (Storage Management > Share
and Storage Management > File Server Resource Manager > Quota Management > Quotas), the Quota
Creation window might not open, the File Server Resource Manager will fail with the message An unexpected
error occurred, and an entry will be added to the event logs.
Workaround:
1. Close the Server Manager.
2. Restart the File Server Resource Manager service.
3. Reopen the Server Manager.
Issue: Disk Management snap-in fails
The Disk Management snap-in can fail in the following instances:
•If multiple Server Manager instances are open and the Disk Management snap-in in is selected in more
than one Server Manager instance
•If the Disk Management snap-in is opened in Server Manager and also from the Disk Manager console in
Administrative tools
•If multiple Disk Management snap-ins are opened in Server Manager
Workaround: This is a Microsoft issue which will be resolved in a future release. To work around this issue,
use only one Disk Management snap-in instance at a time.
Additional applications and utilities
This section provides additional information on using certain applications and utilities on the storage
system.
Issue: HPSUM incorrectly reports a ProLiant Support Pack component as not installed
Even though the StorageWorks Fibre Channel Array Notification Driver is installed with the image, when the
HPSUM utiltiy is run to check for required updates, this driver is listed as Ready for installation instead of
Already up-to date as expected.
Workaround: This issue will be resolved in a future release.
Issue: Adding the hardware ID in MPIO properties results in losing access to MPIO LUNs
In rare cases, configuring MPIO when connected to an MSA array will result in losing access to the MPIO
LUNs. The correct MPIO configuration can be determined by opening device manager and confirming that
the LUNs presented from the MSA array are enumerated as a "Multi-path Disk Device". If incorrectly configured,
the LUNs are not present in the device manager or are enumerated twice.
Workaround: Use the MPIO control panel to remove and re-add the MSA array device.
Issue: DFS and NFS errors logged in Event Viewer
There may be errors from DFS and NFS logged in the Event Viewer after the storage system is configured.
Workaround: These errors can be ignored.

Issue: The Create LUN operation fails
The Storage Manager for SAN Create LUN operation fails if there are no free physical disks.
Workaround: This failure occurs when there are no unused physical disks available to create a new LUN. To
work around this issue, use the Array Configuration Utility to create the LUNs.
Issue: The iSCSI Initiator is sometimes unable to connect properly to the iSCSI Target
When Windows Storage Server 2008 Standard Edition is restarted, the iSCSI Initiator is sometimes unable
to connect properly to the iSCSI Target. The iSCSI Initiator persistent targets connections indicate a reconnecting
status.
Workaound: Manually enable the connections using iSCSI Initiator:
1. In the iSCSI Initiator user interface, select the Targets tab.
2. For the inactive target, click Log on.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Set the Local adapter to Microsoft iSCSI Initiator.
5. Set the Source IP to the appropriate IPv4 or IPv6 address.
6. Click OK.
7. Select the Discovery tab.
8. Click Add Portal.
9. Click Advanced.
10. Set the Local adapter to Microsoft iSCSI Initiator.
11. Set the Source IP to the appropriate IPv4 or IPv6 address.
12. Click OK.
13. Set the IP or DNS name for the iSCSI Target.
14. Click OK.
Issue: Event Notification Wizard Help is not available
The Event Notification Wizard Help is not available after changing the system language to a non-English
language. The Event Notification Wizard is used to manage HP Management Agents events.
Workaround: Open the help file manually by clicking Start > HP Management Agents > Event Notifier Help
Issue: The links in the right panel of the Share and Storage Management snap-in do not function properly
In Server Manager under Share and Folder Management there is a provision provided on the right panel to
Manage Open Files. The wizard displays open files under Open Mode with a Read status instead of Read/Write
or Write.
Workaround: There is currently no known workaround. This issue may be resolved by Microsoft in a future
release.
Issue: The HP Smart Array P411 controller does not allow a LUN extend operation and the VDS provider fails
Because the controller's cache status is set to disabled, the Array Configuration Utility does not display the
extend option. This generally occurs if the Battery Backed Write Cache (BBWC) is not available or enabled.
Enabling BBWC is required for array expansion / LUN extension features.
Workaround: Set the controller's cache status to enabled.

System installation and recovery
This section describes issues related to the system installation and recovery process.
Issue: Data volumes are not remounted after system recovery
Mounted data volumes are not remounted after performing a system recovery. These data volumes are not
damaged or destroyed but they are not visible after a system recovery operation.
Workaround: In order to restore the mount points to their original locations, you must record them prior to
running system recovery.
1. Using Windows Disk Manager, record the mount points of the volumes within the root directory of each
volume.
2. After running system recovery, scan the system to find data volumes that are not assigned drive letters.
3. Temporarily mount the volumes that are not assigned drive letters.
4. Locate the recorded list of mount points and remount the temporarily mounted volumes to the correct loc-
ations according to the record.
Issue: System recovery may fail on storage systems with external arrays
System recovery may sometimes fail on storage systems with external arrays that have virtual disks attached.
Workaround: Disconnect the array and restart the system recovery process. After the image has been restored,
reconnect the array.
Issue: When a non-English language is used during system recovery, the Windows Storage Server 2008 user
interface is displayed in English
During system recovery, the Windows Storage Server 2008 user interface is displayed in English when a
different language is selected at the beginning of the system recovery process.
Workaround: Change the system language after the system recovery process is complete.
1. In Control panel, double-click Regional and Language Options.
2. Select the Keyboards and Languages tab.
3. Click Install/Uninstall Languages.
4. Click Install Languages.
5. Select the desired language file folder and then click Next.
NOTE:
Language files are located in the C:\hpnas\Components\languagepacks folder.
6. Accept the license terms and then click Next.
7. Click Install.
8. Check the Change my display language to and Apply Changes to system accounts check boxes and then
click Log off.
9. After logging on again, configure additional regional settings by navigating to Start > Control Panel >
Regional and Language Options.
Issue: System recovery fails on some storage systems with the SC11Xe SCSI HBA installed
HP StorageWorks X1800 and X3800 Network Storage Systems that have the SC11Xe SCSI HBA installed
may fail to complete the system recovery process and do not respond after the process is initiated.
Workaround: Uninstall the SC11Xe SCSI HBA card, run the system recovery, and then re-install the HBA card.

Issue: A VDS Dynamic Provider error is displayed and Event ID 10 is logged during system recovery
During the system recovery process, the error message HP StorageWorks MSA VDS Hardware Provider has
stopped working may be displayed and Event ID 10 may be logged in Event Viewer.
Workaround: This error can be ignored and is a known issue as described in Microsoft support KB article #
948275 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948275).
