1 Introduction
About This Guide
This guide contains instructions for installing a D6077A upgrade kit to add a
second hot-swap mass storage cage to your HP NetServer LH 3/3r or LH 4/4r. The
HP NetServer LH 3 or LH 4 is the floor-standing pedestal configuration, and the
HP NetServer LH 3r or 4r is the rack-optimized configuration, as shown in
Figure 1-1.

This guide uses the following names for rack enclosures:
•HP Rack: This guide’s designation for all of the following rack enclosures:

Chapter 3 tells how to configure the disk drives in non-RAID configuration (also
called "JBOD," or "Just a Bunch of Disks" configuration), which is the factory
default mode.
Appendix A tells where to find information on configuring the disk drives in
RAID configuration under control of the integrated HP NetRAID controller.
Appendix B contains warranty and support information, and Appendix C contains
regulatory information.

Precautions
Follow the procedures listed below to ensure safe handling of components and to
prevent harm to both you and the NetServer:
WARNING Hazardous voltages and high energy levels are present inside
the NetServer. ALWAYS disconnect the AC power cord(s)
from the NetServer before removing the cover. Serious injury
may result if this warning is not observed.
WARNING To prevent the rack from tipping over, extend the anti-tip foot
or attach the anti-tip feature before extending the NetServer
from the rack. Also lower the leveler feet of the rack to
improve stability and to prevent the rack from rolling. Failure
to use the anti-tip foot or feature and the leveler feet could
result in serious injury.
CAUTION This accessory is sensitive to static electricity and can easily
be damaged by improper handling. Use of a grounding strap is
recommended. Read the following information carefully
before you handle the accessory:
• Leave the accessory in the antistatic container until you are
ready to install it.
• Use an antistatic service kit, such as 3M®8501/8502/8505
or equivalent.
• Before you remove the accessory from the antistatic
container, touch a grounded, unpainted metal surface on
the system to discharge static electricity.

Verify Contents
Unpack and verify the contents of the shipping box. This mass storage upgrade kit
contains the following:
•Hot-swap mass storage cage, shown in Figure 1-3
•Screws to mount the hot-swap mass storage cage
•SCSI cable to connect the hot-swap mass storage cage
•HP NetServer LH 3/3r and LH 4/4r Mass Storage Upgrade Kit Guide (this
document)
If anything is missing or damaged, contact your reseller.

CAUTION An insulating sheet covers the cage’s management boardand
backplane. Leave it in place, and be careful not to damage it.
Tools You Need
The following materials are also required to install this upgrade:
•Antistatic Service Kit (3M®part number 8501/8502/8505 or equivalent)
containing a wrist strap, antistatic mat, and cable. Use this kit to prevent
damage to the system from static electricity.
•T-15 Torx driver
•T-25 Torx driver
•HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM (required for RAID configuration)

2 Installation
Installation Overview
Installing a second hot-swap mass storage cage in your NetServer requires these
general steps, which are described in this chapter:
•Step 1: Power Down and Disconnect
•Step 2: Remove Front Bezel
(If the NetServer is in a rack enclosure, remove it.)
•Step 3: Remove Cover 1 and Cover Plate
•Step 4: Install Mass Storage Cage
•Step 5: Remove Fan Assemblies
•Step 6: Install SCSI Cable
•Step 7: Connect Power Harness
•Step 8: Replace Fan Assemblies
•Step 9: Replace Cover 1 and Front Bezel
(Also replace the NetServer in the rack, if necessary.)
•Step 10: Install Hard Disk Drive Modules
•Step 11: Reconnect Power Cord(s) and Other Cables
•Step 12: Verify Hard Disk Drive LEDs
After you finish the installation, go to Chapter 3 to configure your mass storage.
Step 1: Power Down and Disconnect
Do the following to power down and disconnect the NetServer:
1. Back up your system.
2. Bring down the network properly.

3. Turn off power to the HP NetServer.
4. Disconnect the AC power cord(s) and all external cables from the
NetServer.
WARNING Before removing the cover, always disconnect the power
cord(s) and unplug telephone cables. Disconnect telephone
cables to avoid exposure to shock hazard from telephone
ringing voltages. Disconnect the power cord(s) to avoid
exposure to high energy levels that may cause burns when
parts are short-circuited by metal objects such as tools or
jewelry.
Note that the power switch does NOT turn off the standby
power. Disconnect the power cord(s) to turn off standby
power. If the backlight on the front panel LCD is still on,
standby power is still on.
Step 2: Remove Front Bezel
To remove the front bezel, follow the procedure for your NetServer configuration:
•HP NetServer in pedestal configuration
•HP NetServer in an HP rack
•HP NetServer in a Compaq rack
For a Pedestal NetServer
For an HP NetServer in pedestal configuration, do the following to remove the
front bezel:
1. If the NetServer is on casters, lock them to prevent movement of the
NetServer.
2. Unlock the front bezel lock with the key, if necessary.
3. The front bezel snaps into the face of the NetServer chassis with connectors
at the top front of the chassis, and it fits into slots on the bottom front of the
chassis. Pull the bezel forward until it unsnaps from these connectors, then
lift the bezel forward and upward from the chassis face, as shown in
Figure 2-1.

For a NetServer in an HP Rack
For an HP NetServer in an HP rack, refer to the NetServer documentation and
your rack documentation as you do the following to remove the front bezel:
1. Ensure that all anti-tip and anti-roll features are installed and in use:
◊For HP Rack System racks and HP Rack System/E racks, extend
the anti-tip foot from under the front of the rack, and lower the four
leveler feet at the corners of the rack.
◊For HP Rack System/U racks, ensure that the anti-tip feature is
attached, and lower the four leveler feet at the corners of the rack.

WARNING To prevent the rack from tipping over, extend the anti-tip foot
or attach the anti-tip feature before extending the NetServer
from the rack. Also lower the leveler feet of the rack to
improve stability and to prevent the rack from rolling. Failure
to use the anti-tip foot or feature and the leveler feet could
result in serious injury.
2. If there is a door on the rack, remove it.
3. The NetServer uses a chassis retention bracket (steel z-bracket) to secure
the rear of the NetServer to the rack assembly. Unscrew the NetServer from
the chassis retention bracket by removing the two screws shown in
Figure 2-2. Leave the bracket attached to the rack column.

4. Clips attach the front bezel to the NetServer chassis. To remove the bezel,
simply pull it toward you until it comes free, as shown in Figure 2-3.

5. Unscrew the NetServer chassis from the front of the HP rack, as follows:
a. Remove two screws securing the bezel hinge to the rack, as shown in
Figures 2-4 and 2-5. Do not unscrew the entire hinge from the chassis;
remove only the outer screws, so the hinge remains attached to the
NetServer chassis.
b. Remove two screws securing the bezel latch assemblyto the rack, as
shown in Figures 2-4 and 2-5. Do not unscrew the entire assembly from
the chassis; remove only the outer screws, so the latch assembly
remains attached to the NetServer chassis.

6. Pull the NetServer forward from the rack until the lockout device engages
with a click.
For a NetServer in a Compaq Rack
For an HP NetServer in a Compaq rack, refer to the NetServer documentation and
your rack documentation for instructions as you do the following to remove the
front bezel:
1. Verify that the anti-tip feature is installed on the rack and that the leveler
feet are lowered.
WARNING To prevent the rack from tipping over, ensure that the anti-tip
feature is installed before extending the NetServer from the
rack. Also lower the leveler feet of the rack to improve
stability and to prevent the rack from rolling. Do NOT extend
more than one piece of equipment at a time out from the front
of the rack. Failure to take these precautions could result in
serious injury and equipment damage.
2. If there is a door on the rack, remove it.

3. Clips attach the front bezel to the NetServer chassis. To remove the bezel,
simply pull it toward you until it comes free, as shown in Figure 2-6.

4. Unscrew the NetServer chassis from the Compaq rack, as follows:
a. Remove two screws securing the left recessed bracket to the rack
column, as shown in Figure 2-7. Do not unscrew the bracket from the
NetServer.
b. Remove two screws securing the right recessed bracket to the rack
column, as shown in Figure 2-7. Do not unscrew the bracket from the
NetServer.

5. Pull the NetServer forward from the rack until the lockout device engages
with a click.
Step 3: Remove Cover 1 and Cover Plate
Remove Cover 1, shown in Figures 2-8 and 2-9, by unscrewing the thumbscrew
and then pulling the cover forward to disengage it. Lift it outward and away from
the chassis.
