Preface
Purpose of this Guide
This guide describes the steps you need to perform to convert the HP NetServer
LH 3 (pedestal configuration) to the LH 3r (rack configuration).

Tools You Need
To install this accessory kit, you need the following tools:
¨A slotted head screwdriver.
¨An anti-static service kit (3M8501/8502/8503 or equivalent). This kit
includes a static-dissipating work surface, a chassis clip lead, and a wrist
strap.

1Introduction
Installation Overview
This guide describes the tools required and the procedure for converting the HP
NetServer LH 3 (the pedestal configuration) to the HP NetServer LH 3r (the
rack-mountable configuration.)
Briefly, the conversion takes several steps:
1. Gather the tools and documentation needed to perform the conversion.
2. Remove the Bezel and the Rack Rail Cover, Hard Disk Drives, and Power
Supply Modules.
3. Move the NetServer to a bench area and position it on its side. Remove
the casters from the NetServer and install any additional memory or
accessory cards. Attach the rack mounting handles to the NetServer.
4. Remove the plastic lock pawl (which engages and secures the bezel lock
mechanism) from the NetServer chassis front. Unfasten the control panel
from the chassis and reorient it, then secure it to the chassis again. Install
the control panel bezel
5. Install the rails in the rack.
6. Install the LH 3r in the rack.
7. Install the bezel hinge and latch plate to the front of the NetServer. Install
the LH 3r bezel.

Verifying Contents
The contents of the shipping box include:
•New bezels for the NetServer, one for the Compaq rack configuration, and
one for the HP rack configuration
•Bezel hinge plate and bezel hinge
•Bezel latch plate and bezel latch
•Control panel bezel (for HP or Compaq rack configuration)
•Rack mounting rails (for HP or Compaq rack configuration)
•Mounting screws and hardware
Prepare for Installation
Gather the tools and the setup information you need before beginning the
conversion. Locate the HP NetServer where there will be sufficient space to
remove the covers, power supply modules, and disk drives. If you plan on adding
accessory cards or additional memory, reserve bench space at a comfortable level
so you can reach the interior of the LH 3r easily.

CAUTION Never operate this NetServer without first installing all
covers and the front bezel. Operating the system without all
covers in place reduces critical cooling airflow over some
components, such as hard disk drives and processor modules.
Operating the system without all covers in place may result in
failure of these components.
The HP NetServer LH 3 must have its covers in place for
proper cooling. When you open the HP NetServer while it is
operating, do not run it for more than 3 minutes. Do not
operate the HP NetServer for more than 2 minutes without a
working fan mounted immediately behind the power supplies.
Failure to observe these precautions may result in thermal
damage to the HP NetServer.
WARNING Before removing the cover, always disconnect the power cord
and unplug telephone cables. Disconnect the power cord to
avoid exposure to high energy levels that may cause burns
when parts are short-circuited by metal objects, such as tools
or jewelry. Disconnect telephone cables to avoid exposure to
shock hazard from telephone ringing devices.
Note that the power switch does not turn off the standby
power. Disconnect the power cord to turn off standby power.
If the backlight on the LCD display is on, standby power is
still on.
CAUTION Wear a wrist strap and use a static-dissipating work surface
connected to the chassis at all times.

Removing the Bezel and Rack Rail Cover
The NetServer has three hand-removable cover panels (and the bezel):
•Cover 1 covers the side where the I/O Board is located.
•Cover 2 covers the area above the processor.
•Cover 3 covers the side where the processor is located.
The Rack Rail Cover is a fourth cover secured with a screw. This is the only
cover you need to remove to perform the LH 3 to LH 3r conversion.
To remove the Rack Rail Cover, first unlock the bezel, using the supplied key,
and remove it from the front of the NetServer.
Bezel
The bezel connects to the front of the NetServer chassis with two snap-in
connectors at the top front of the chassis and three tabs that fit into three slots on
the bottom front of the chassis. To remove the bezel, unlock the bezel lock and
pull the bezel forward until it unsnaps. Then lift the bezel forward and upward
from the chassis face, as shown in Figure 2-1.

Rack Rail Cover
Remove the Rack Rail Cover by unscrewing it and pulling it forward to
disengage it. Lift it outward and away from the chassis.

Removing Hot-Swap Hard Disk Drives
Before you lift the NetServer, remove the hard disk drives. This will lighten the
NetServer so fewer people will be needed to lift it.
CAUTION The HP NetServer LH 3r weighs up to 160 pounds (73 kg.)
when fully loaded. Take out power supplies and hot-swap
hard disk drives before lifting the NetServer into the rack.
Follow all local regulations when moving the NetServer. In
the USA, OSHA regulations require one lifter for every 40
pounds of weight or fraction thereof.

1. Refer to Figure 2-3 below. To unlock the drive, push the locking latch in
and then pull the ejector handle toward you.
2. Gently pull the drive out about an inch to disengage the power connection.
3. Use your hand to support the bottom of the drive. Slowly pull the drive
straight out. Do not allow the drive to fall.
4. Place the drive in an electrostatic protected container. Do not stack drives.

Removing Power Supply Modules
To remove the Power Supply Modules, unscrew the modules and pull them away
from the NetServer, as shown in Figure 2-4. Put them aside for later
reinstallation.

Moving the NetServer
Using one person for every 40 pounds of NetServer weight, lift the NetServer
onto an empty work surface for easy access to the interior and to the face of the
chassis. Rotate the NetServer so that Cover 1 is now on top, as shown in
Figure 2-5.
Removing the Casters
Remove the casters from the LH 3 by unfastening the screws that secure them to
the NetServer chassis.

Installing Memory or Accessory Cards
If you are going to install additional memory or an accessory card, refer to the
documentation accompanying the memory or accessory card and install it now.
Installing the Handles
The four handles mount two to a side. Use the provided screws to mount them, as
shown in Figure 3-1 below.

Reorienting the Control Panel
The control panel must be repositioned so it is easily readable in the rack-mount
position, as shown below in Figure 3-2.
Before rotating the control panel, remove the lock pawl, located near the control
panel. This is a small plastic part that engages the lock assembly in the bezel.
NOTE There are two possible positions for the reinstallation of the
control panel, depending in which rack the NetServer will
reside. Refer to Figure 3-3 below.
For HP Racks
1. Unhook the control panel from the face of the chassis, as shown in
Figure 3-2.
2. Remove the lock pawl by squeezing the base until the lips disengage from
the mounting slots, as shown in Figure 3-2.
3. Rotate the control panel until it is aligned with the rack position of the
NetServer, as shown in Figure 3-3.
4. Refer to Figure 3-3. Mount the control panel in the set of slots on the
right. The other set of slots on the left are used for mounting the control
panel in a configuration for the Compaq rack.
5. Refer to Figure 3-4. Mount the control panel bezel over the control panel
in the set of slots on the right.
For Non-HP ( Compaq) Racks
1. Unhook the control panel from the face of the chassis, as shown in
Figure 3-2.
2. Remove the lock pawl by squeezing the base until the lips disengage from
the mounting slots, as shown in Figure 3-2.
3. Rotate the control panel until it is aligned with the rack position of the
NetServer, as shown in Figure 3-3.
4. Refer to Figure 3-3. Mount the control panel in the set of slots on the left.
The other set of slots on the right are used for mounting the control panel
in a configuration for HP racks.
