About This Guide

Precautions
Follow the procedures listed below and in this manual to ensure safe handling of
components and to prevent harm to both you and the HP NetServer.
WARNING Before removing a cover, always disconnect the power cord(s)
and unplug telephone cables. Disconnect the power cords to
avoid exposure to high energy levels that may cause burns
when parts are short-circuited by metal objects, such as tools
or jewelry. Disconnect telephone cables to avoid exposure to
shock hazard from telephone ringing devices. Note that the
power switch does not turn off the standby power. Disconnect
the power cord(s) to turn off standby power.
CAUTION This processor module is sensitive to static electricity and can
easily be damaged by improper handling. Use of a grounding
strap is recommended. Read the following information
carefully before you handle the processor:
•Leave the processor in the sealed antistatic bag until you
are ready to install it.
•Use an antistatic service kit, such as 3M8501/8502/8505
or equivalent.
•Before you remove the processor from the antistatic bag,
touch a grounded, unpainted metal surface on the system to
discharge static electricity.

Processor Upgrade
Introduction
The HP NetServer LH 6000/6000r supports up to six processor modules and the
accompanying voltage regulation modules (VRMs) on the system board assembly.
Processor modules are available at different clock speeds, but in a multi-processor
configuration, all processors must operate at the same speed.
You can use this upgrade accessory to replace an existing processor module
with a higher speed processor, or to add additional processor modules to a
single-processor system. See Figure 1-1.

Tools Required
The following tools are required to remove and replace processor modules and
there respective VRM.
•An antistatic service kit (3M8501/8502/8505 or equivalent). This kit
includes a static-dissipating work surface, a chassis clip lead, and a wrist
strap. Use this kit to prevent damage to the system from static electricity.

Upgrade Overview
To upgrade a processor, or processors in the HP NetServer LH6000/6000r, you
will follow these basic steps:
l Shut down the NOS and the HP NetServer.
l Remove the required covers and cables (AC and I/O).
•Remove the system board and processor cage covers.
•Remove the terminator (if you are adding an additional processor).
or
Remove the existing processor module and VRM (if you are replacing a
processor).
•Install the new processor module.
•Install a VRM.
•Set the configuration switch settings, if necessary.
•Complete the hardware installation.
•Update the BIOS and if necessary reinstall your network operating system.
Configuration Guidelines
l Use only processor upgrade kits with the same HP product number. This
ensures the processor type, thermal heat sink, clock speed, and cache size,
and processor stepping are compatible.
l Install processors in consecutive order; that is, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
l Ensure the VRM is installed in the proper slot with the respective
processor module associated with it. For example, the processor module in
slot 2 must have a VRM installed in VRM slot 2.
CAUTION Ensure the processor module remains sealed in the antistatic
bag until you are ready to install it.
Before you remove a processor from the antistatic bag, touch a
grounded, unpainted metal surface on the HP NetServer to
discharge static electricity.

Processor Installation
Do not set the processor speed switches to a different speed from the one labeled
on the processor, as this can result in unreliable or intermittent performance, and
data integrity may also be at risk.
System Preparation
The installation procedure is the same for the rack-mount and the pedestal
NetServer once you gain access to the system board assembly.
1. Log off all users and, if necessary, backup the system.
2. Gracefully shut down the NOS according to directions in your NOS
documentation.
3. Press the power switch on the HP NetServer’s control panel when
prompted by the NOS.
4. Disconnect the power cords and signal cables and, if necessary, label each
one to support reassembly.
CAUTION The power supplies will continue to provide standby current to
the NetServer until the power cable is disconnected.
5. Gain access to the system board assembly for either model, rack-mounted
or pedestal, by following the instructions in the HP NetServer LH
6000/6000r Installation Guide.
NOTE In the LH 6000r, this assembly is under the right cover, in the
LH 6000, it is under the top cover.
6. Remove the two screws securing the system board assembly to the chassis.
7. Loosen the two captive fasteners securing the system board assembly to
the chassis.
8. Unlatch the blue retaining latches to release the assembly.
9. Pull the assembly out until it clears the chassis guides.
CAUTION The system board assembly weighs approximately 30 lbs. (14
kgs.) and requires extra support as you remove it from the
chassis.

CAUTION Wear a wrist-strap and use a static-dissipating work surface
connected to the chassis when handling components. Ensure
the metal of the wrist strap contacts your skin.

10. Refer to the next topic to decide on your next step.
Removing the Terminator or Existing Processor
In this topic you decide between removing the terminator(s) or an existing
processor module.
•If your system has one processor module and you are installing an
additional processor, remove the terminator as described in the next section
"Removing the Terminator."
•If you are upgrading an existing processor or processors, remove the
existing processors as described in section "Removing a Processor Module
and VRM."
Removing the Terminator
If your system has at least one processor module, there are terminators installed in
all remaining slots. You mustremove a terminator for each new processor before
installing an additional processor module into the next available slot.
1. Loosen the thumbscrew and open the access cover to the processor slots.
See Figure 1-4.
Both sides of the processor cage have covers and thumbscrews.

2. Open the latches and remove the terminator from the next available slot as
shown in Figure 1-5.

3. Save all terminators for future use.
4. If adding more processor modules, repeat steps 2 and 3 for each new
processor.
Removing a Processor Module and VRM
If you are upgrading an existing processor, you must first remove the existing
processor module and its respective VRM.
1. Rotate the retaining latches to release the processor module.
2. Remove the desired processor module from the slot and place it on
antistatic surface. See Figure 1-6.
3. Identify the respective VRM for the processor module. See Figure 1-1.
For example, if you remove processor 1, you must remove the VRM 1.
4. Open the retaining latches of the desired VRM.
5. Pull the VRM out of the slot. See Figure 1-6.
6. Ensure you keep the processor module with its associated VRM.

7. If upgrading more processor modules, repeat Steps 1–6 for each existing
processor module and its VRM.

Installing the Processor
1. Unpack the processor shipping box and check the contents against its
packing list.
CAUTION Ensure the processor module remains sealed in the antistatic
bag until you are ready to install it.
2. Remove the desired processor from the sealed bag.
3. Open the latches on top of the processor module. See Figure 1-7.
4. Align the new processor in front of the next available slot.
The heat sinks for processors 1, 2, and 3 face away from the system board
and the heat sinks for processors 4, 5, and 6 face toward the system board.
See Figure 1-7.

5. Gently push down on the new processor until it is fully seated.
6. Rotate the retaining latches to seat the processor firmly into the slot.
7. If installing more processor modules, repeat Steps 1–6 for each new
processor module.
8. Close the access covers to the processor slots and tighten the thumbscrews.
See Figure 1-4.
Installing the VRM
1. Select the correct slot for the VRM and align it with the respective slot.
NOTE The component side of the VRM will face down toward the
system board.
CAUTION Do not touch the VRM components as you push it into its slot.
Use the edges of the VRM board to insert it into the slot.
2. Gently insert the VRM into the desired slot. See Figure 1-8.

3. If installing more processor modules, install a new VRM for each new
processor module, by repeating Steps 1–2.
Setting the Processor Speed
If you are installing processors with a faster (or slower) speed setting than
installed previously, you must change the switch settings of the configuration
switch located on the system board. All processors in the system must operated at
the same speed.
1. Determine the processor speed setting from Table 1-1.

NOTE Some processor speeds listed in Table 1-1 and shown in Figure
1-9 may not be supported. For the latest support information,
visit the HP web site: http:/www.hp.com/go/netserver.
2. Set the speed switches as listed in Table 1-1 and shown in Figure 1-9.
A small, flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool may be used.

CAUTION Do not set the configuration switches to a different (faster)
speed, than the stated speed of the processor’s design. All
processors in the system must operate at the same speed.
Setting the processor speed to another speed may result in
unreliable or intermittent performance. Data integrity may
also be placed at risk if processors are operated at speeds other
than the one specified on the processor module.

Completing the Hardware Upgrade
Complete the hardware installation as follows:
1. Reinstall the system board assemblyinto the chassis. See Figures 1-2
and 1-3.
2. Reconnect cables and power cords to the NetServer.
3. Follow the instructions for closing up the NetServer in the HP NetServer
LH 6000/6000r Installation Guide.
4. Restore power to the HP NetServer.
CAUTION Operating the system without all covers in place reduces
critical cooling airflow over some components, such as hard
disk drives and processor modules. Continuous operation of
the system without all covers in place will increase
temperatures and may reduce the reliability of some
components.
5. Check the boot messages to see if the system detects the additional
processors.
6. If boot messages indicate the additional processor(s) has/have not been
found, verify:
a. The processor retest function in the Setup Utility is set to Enabled.
b. All processors use the same speed and cache size.
c. The processor(s) and the VRM(s) are installed in the correct slots and
seated properly.
d. Check the System Event log for debug information.
7. If boot messages still fail to report the new processor(s), you must reinstall
the NOS.
8. Go to Chapter 3, "Updating the BIOS," in this guide to reinstall the NOS.
Updating Firmware
Refer to the instructions in Chapter 3 in this guide to update your BIOS and
if necessary, reinstall your network operating system (NOS).

Introduction
The HP NetServer supports LT 6000r up to six processor modules and the
accompanying voltage regulation modules (VRMs) on the system board assembly.

Tools Required

•T-15 Torx driver may only be needed the first time the HP NetServer is
opened.
Upgrade Overview
To upgrade a processor, or processors in the HP NetServer LT 6000r, you will
follow these basic steps:
l Shut down the NOS and the HP NetServer.
l Remove the required covers and cables (AC and I/O).
•Extend the NetServer from the rack.
l Open the NetServer for access to the system board.
•Remove the system board and processor cage covers.
•Remove the terminator (if you are adding an additional processor).
or
Remove the existing processor module and VRM (if you are upgrading
processor modules).
•Install the new processor module.
•Install a VRM.
•Set the configuration switch settings, if necessary.
•Complete the hardware installation.
•Update the BIOS and, if necessary, reinstall the NOS.
