Description
Intelligent Provisioning is one of the embedded management features of the HP iLO Management
Engine, and is a single-server deployment tool embedded in all HP ProLiant Gen8 servers. Intelligent
Provisioning supplies most drivers required for your operating system.
Intelligent Provisioning replaces the SmartStart CDs and Smart Update Firmware DVD shipped with
previous generation HP ProLiant servers. The CDs and DVD do not ship with HP ProLiant Gen8 servers.
These release notes provide information about this release of Intelligent Provisioning, including support
information, enhancements, and known issues and their potential workarounds.

Product models
Intelligent Provisioning supports HP ProLiant Gen8 servers.
HP ProLiant SL and SE servers do not support operating system installations with Intelligent Provisioning,
but do support the maintenance features described in the Performing Maintenance section of the HP
Intelligent Provisioning User Guide and online help.
Operating systems and devices
NOTE: Intelligent Provisioning does not support all server-supported operating systems, including
32-bit Windows operating systems.
The following operating systems are supported for use with Intelligent Provisioning:

Enhancements
•Added support for Microsoft Windows Server 2012.
•Added support for SR-IOV, using Windows Server 2012 Intel virtual function (VF) drivers.
•When using the guest OS, added support for installing VF NIC drivers.
•Added the ability to enroll this server for Insight Remote Support services.
•Simplified the Erase utility options and screen display.
Prerequisites
•Hardware, firmware, and software requirements for this release are listed in the HP Intelligent
Provisioning Server Support Guide.
•Prerequisites and support information are documented in the HP Intelligent Provisioning User
Guide.
•Intelligent Provisioning does not support connecting to an FTP server through a proxy.
Installation instructions
HP ProLiant Gen8 servers are pre-loaded with a basic set of firmware and operating system components
that are installed with Intelligent Provisioning. After the server is running, use the Intelligent Provisioning
Firmware Update utility to update any components that have been outdated since the server was
manufactured.
Updating instructions are documented in the HP Intelligent Provisioning User Guide.
Installation notes
Windows Small Business Server 2011: If you see the message The Username or Password is
incorrect, click OK and enter the same Password entered with the OS Product Information.
Windows and VMware: Only flat files are supported over FTP. ISO files are not supported.
An embedded NIC card on the motherboard of the server takes the position of eth0 and eth1, pushing
the LOM to eth2 and eth3.
VMware: VMware ESX and ESXi require a custom HP ISO. You can download the ISO from the
VMware website (http://www.hp.com/go/esxidownload).

Known issues and suggested actions
HP strongly recommends that the resolutions listed in this document be applied accordingly to instructions
in the resolution documents. Failure to do so might result in issues that can cause disruption to the
operation and functionality of HP ProLiant servers. This list is updated as new issues are discovered
and resolved.
Operational issues
•When installing Windows Server 2012 operating systems, error messages about untested Windows
versions may be displayed while the drivers are being installed.
Suggested action: Disregard these messages.
•On systems with HP H220, H222, and H210i Host Bus Adapters, the installation may stall when
using Intelligent Provisioning to install VMware ESX 4.1 U2.
Suggested action: Wait. The installation will proceed and the OS will come up successfully.
•Manual OS installation fails in iSCSI profile environments.
Suggested action: Manually install the required boot drivers, so that the logical drives can be
detected.
•A device was not updated through the Firmware Update Utility.
Suggested action: Use HP SUM to update the component from the SPP.
•If no logical drives are present when performing an OS installation, the installation fails and the
server reboots. In addition, on the Hardware Settings screen, if Recommended Settings is selected,
but there are no logical drives, there is no error indicating that the installation will fail.
Suggested action: Before installing the OS, create logical drives through Array Configuration
Utility.
•If hard drives are not installed or if the arrays are not configured, OS installation through
Deployment Settings does not complete.
Suggested action: Be sure hard drives and arrays are configured before installing an OS
Deployment Settings.
•After generating an Array Diagnostic Report through Array Configuration Utility and saving it to
a USB key, the USB key is not detected in other Intelligent Provisioning utilities.
Suggested action: Reboot the server.
•During product launches, HP might experience down times in which online files might be
unavailable. These files might include those needed for downloading Intelligent Provisioning, SPP,
and Scripting Toolkit. Connection errors might also be experienced during these times.
•When Create a deployment setting from the assisted install is selected in the Step 4: Review screen,
customized SNMP and WBEM settings are not saved in the deployment profile as expected.
Suggested action: After creating a deployment settings profile, open the profile and navigate
through the settings. Make changes as needed.
•When attempting manual installation using FCOE Personality, the installation does not complete.
The FCOE driver is not present on VID.
Suggested action: Manually install the required drivers before performing a manual installation
using FCOE Personality.
•When running a deployment with Firmware Update settings enabled, the firmware is not updated.
Suggested action: Update the firmware using the Firmware Update utility from the Perform
Maintenance screen.

•Settings in the Intelligent Provisioning Preferences screen are saved only after you exit the screen.
•In the Perform Maintenance screen, if Insight Diagnostics is double-clicked, a message is displayed,
notifying you that you attempted to have two sessions of Insight Diagnostics open at the same
time.
Suggested action: When selecting menu options in the Perform Maintenance screen, only a single
click is necessary. To correct this situation, follow the instructions in the message.
User interface issues
•The latest version of the online help was not incorporated into the Intelligent Provisioning firmware.
Some new features are not described and the help is not available in all languages.
Suggested action: For the latest information, see the Intelligent Provisioning User Guides on the
HP Intelligent Provisioning website.(http://www.hp.com/go/intelligentprovisioning)
•When deploying a profile in the Deployment Settings screen, the Reset to Default Settings First
option does not reset the boot order.
Suggested action: None, this is working as designed.
•When deploying a profile in the Deployment Settings screen, the Intelligent Provisioning language
is not being set as specified.
Suggested action: After the deployment is complete, access Intelligent Provisioning on the sever
and manually set the interface language.
•Un-translated language content is displayed on Navigation buttons and in the Insight Diagnostics
screen.
Suggested action: None available.
•AHS file logs can be created for an invalid date range.
Suggested action: Re-create the AHS log, using a valid date range.
•The default System Profile displayed in the Hardware Settings screen does not match the profile
of the individual settings that were entered in the RBSU.
Suggested action: Expand the System Profile drop-down box and select the desired profile.
•The System Profile displayed in the Review screen does not match the profile selected in the
Hardware Settings screen.
Suggested action: After the Intelligent Provisioning installation and configuration tasks for the
server completes, reboot the server and go to the Quick Configs screen. Confirm that the desired
system profile is displayed as the default. If needed, change the setting to the desired profile.
•The System Profile displayed in the Quick Configs screen does not match the profile displayed in
the Hardware Settings screen.
Suggested action: Ensure that the desired system profile is displayed in the Quick Configs screen.
If needed, change the setting to the desired profile in the Quick Configs screen.
•When updates are performed though the Firmware Update screen, NIC components might be
displayed twice.
Suggested action: None required.
•The ACU component is installed during OS Installation. However, upon running HP SUM, HP
SUM discovery fails to determine that the ACU was installed.
Suggested action: Confirm that the ACU is already installed and that it is not still showing Ready
for installation.
6 Known issues and suggested actions

•When saving ACU logs, if the iLO LUN partition is selected, the logs are not accessible.
Suggested action: Do not save logs to this partition.
•For Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V installations, the installation fails if the Windows standard
option is selected in the OS Information screen.
Suggested action: When installing Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, be sure to select the Windows
Hyper-V option as the OS in the OS Information screen.
•When reading the Intelligent Provisioning EULA, clicking URLs on Ancillary software screen results
in a Server not found error.
Suggested action: Reboot the server and press F10 to access Intelligent Provisioning. Do not click
any links on the Ancillary software page. To access the desired website, on a system with access
to the Internet, copy the link into a web browser.
•When running a deployment with OS settings, it stops at Browse for OS files. When
selecting System Info or Help, the screen is blank.
Suggested action: Reboot the server.
•The Local Repository option in the Update From field of the Deployment Settings Firmware Options
trait is the same as the HTTP/FTP (Use URL Syntax) option in the System Software update field of
Intelligent Provisioning Preferences. Both options are Firmware Update URL options.
Windows-specific issues
•When doing a recommended or custom installation of Windows Datacenter Core editions, the
system reboots after successfully copying Intelligent Provisioning and operating system files. After
Windows initializes, the Administrator account is not available. This issue also occurs with Windows
Server 2008 SP2 x64-bit Hyper V, Enterprise x64 Edition Core, and Windows Server 2008 SP2
x64bit Hyper V, Standard x64 Edition Core.
Suggested action: After installing Windows Datacenter Core editions, log into the Administrator
account with a blank password. In this mode, you will see only a command line (cmd) page.
•The Windows Small Business Server 2011 (base) operating image is too large for a FAT32 format
USB flash drive.
Suggested action: Instead of using a flash drive, use real media, do a network installation via
ISO, or mount virtual media through iLO.
•SNMP cannot be installed on HP-branded Windows Server 2008 Combo media using Intelligent
Provisioning. SNMP can be installed on HP-branded Windows Server 2008 R2 Combo media,
which is supported.
Suggested action: Upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 or install the operating system manually
without Intelligent Provisioning.
•When installing Windows Server 2008 SP2, the recommended and custom installation methods
require a product key and will not proceed without it.
Suggested action: Have the product key available during the installation in case it is needed.
•No information is populated on the System Management Homepage after a recommended
installation on Windows. This is expected behavior because by default only AMS is installed.
Suggested action: To populate the information in the SMH, install WBEM or SNMP agents.
•When installing Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Network Configuration Utility (NCU) is
automatically installed. If NCU is installed, you cannot enable Hyper V. You should ideally enable

Hyper V before installing NCU, but installing NCU is required with this OS, and cannot be
excluded.
Suggestion action: Install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 manually, without using Intelligent
Provisioning. After adding Hyper V, update with the latest version of SPP.
Linux-specific issues
•If SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 is updated using the base operating system image in
Intelligent Provisioning, the connected operating system media will be scanned as Valid media,
but after booting connected media hard disk will not be detected.
Suggested action: When installing SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 via Intelligent Provisioning,
a kISO (kernel update ISO) must be used.
VMware-specific issues
•After installing VMware ESXi 4.1 U2 operating system files, when the server reboots and the
operating system starts initializing, the message Invalid Keyboard type US appears.
Suggested action: Press Enter, if necessary, to continue initialization.
•After copying Intelligent Provisioning and VMware ESXi 4.1 U2 operating system files, when the
server reboots and the operating system starts initializing, the message No DEFAULT or UI
configuration directive found! appears.
Suggested action: Try rebooting again.
•For VMware ESXi 4.1 U2 custom installations, the message No matching licenses appears.
Suggested action: On the OS information screen, either enter the correct license key or leave the
field blank. This field is optional.
•When performing a customized installation for VMware ESX using Disc,Network Share, or USB
source media types, the installation does not occur.
Suggested action: Use FTP source media type for VMware ESX customized installation. FTP is the
only supported source media type for VMware ESX custom installation.
•On the OS Information screen for ESXi custom installation, the Continue arrow is visible. If a host
name is entered in the Host Name field, the Continue arrow disappears.
Suggested action: Make sure the Host Name field contains at least three characters.
