Introducing the Switch
HP ProCurve 6120G/XG Blade Switch
The HP ProCurve 6120G/XG Blade Switch is a blade switch for the HP BladeSystem c-Class
enclosures. The 6120G/XG Blade Switch supports advanced layer 2 switching. This switch can
be used to build high speed switched networks between servers in the data center.

Designed for the c-Class BladeSystem enclosure, the HP ProCurve 6120G/XG Blade Switch
provides sixteen 1Gb backplane connections to the c-class server blade ethernet ports and four
1Gb copper uplinks, two 1Gb SFP uplinks along with three 10Gb uplinks and a single 10Gb
inter-switch link.
A robust set of industry standard layer 2 switching functions, QOS metering, security and High
Availability features are also included.
The inter-switch link (ISL) is an internal port that connects to an identical device in the adjacent
interconnect bay in the c-class enclosure. This port is under the control of both the switch and
the Onboard Administrator (OA) for the c-class enclosure. The OA automatically enables this
port if an identical device is detected in the adjacent bay - there is no user interface for
controlling this port via the OA Web interface or CLI. Administrative control of this port is only
possible using the ProCurve switch CLI or web GUI. This port is disabled by default in the
ProCurve switch factory default configuration.
The 6120G/XG is perfectly suited for data centers in transition where a mix of 1Gb and 10Gb
network connections are required. The 6120G/XG blade switch provides consistency and
interoperability across existing network investments to help reduce the complexity of network
management through resilient core-to-edge connectivity and automated provisioning technol-
ogies. With a variety of connection interfaces the 6120G/XG switch offers excellent investment
protection, flexibility, and scalability, as well as ease of deployment and reduced operational
expense.

HP ProCurve 6120XG Blade Switch
The HP ProCurve 6120XG Blade Switch is a blade switch for the HP BladeSystem c-Class
enclosures. The 6120XG Blade Switch supports advanced Layer two switching. This switch can
be used to build high speed switched networks between servers in the data center.

Designed for the c-Class BladeSystem enclosure, the HP ProCurve 6120XG Blade Switch
provides one 10GBASE-CX4 port and eight SFP+ (10-GbE) uplinks. A robust set of industry
standard layer 2 switching functions, QOS metering, security and High Availability features are
also included.
The HP ProCurve 6120XG Blade Switch provides 24 ports with 10 Gbps per channel connec-
tivity, 3 of which are utilized as shared 10 Gbps ports. There are sixteen 10 Gbps downlink ports
to the server blades, five dedicated front-panel SFP+ ports, front-panel CX4 port, and two 10
Gbps ports individually selectable as front-panel SFP+ port or inter-switch-links. In the
configuration guide these ports are referred to as ISCs.
There are two 10 Gbps ports that can be individually selectable as front-panel SFP+ ports or

Dual-personality ports
Port 17 consists of a CX4 port shared with an SFP+ port. Only one may be active. The SFP+
port takes precedence: if it contains a module, it is the active port and the CX4 port is inactive.
Ports 23 and 24 are each shared with inter-switch link ports on the blade switch's backplane.
Either the SFP+ port on the front panel or the backplane port can be active, but both can not
be active at the same time. The SFP+ port on the frontplane takes precedence: if it contains a
module, it is the active port and its corresponding backplane port is inactive.
The ISL ports are disabled in the default configuration on the 6120/XG. When the port is changed
from ISL to transceiver or from transceiver to ISL the port is disabled. The port must be
manually enabled by way of a switch configuration interface and the OA interface before the
ports will link. Do not attempt to enable these ports unless the interconnect blade adjacent to
this switch is an identical ProCurve switch. For more information see the HP BladeSystem OA

Note To prevent loops, LACP is on by default on these two ports, and Spanning Tree is on by default
for the whole switch.

Pre-Installation Planning
Before beginning installation complete the following tasks:
■It is recommended the firmware revisions on all ProCurve Blade Switches are at the same
revision level. Some versions of the firmware might not be compatible.
■Determine which mezzanine cards, HBAs, and interconnect Switches are going to be used
and where they will be installed in the enclosure. For installation and information on
mapping server ports to interconnect bays, see the appropriate HP BladeSystem enclosure
setup and installation guide on the HP Web site www.hp.com/go/bladesystem/documentation.
■Determine which Ethernet networks will be connected to or contained within the
enclosure.
Most installations will have multiple Ethernet networks, each typically mapped to a
specific IP subnet. Each physical NIC on a server blade can be connected to any one of
these Ethernet networks.
■Coordinate with data center personnel to ensure Ethernet network cable connections to
the enclosure are installed or scheduled to be installed.
■Set passwords. Identify the administrators for the environment and identify what roles and
administrative privileges they will require.
Hardware setup overview
The following steps provide an overview of setting up the Blade Switch:
1. Install and set up the enclosure. See the appropriate HP BladeSystem enclosure setup and
installation guide on the HP Web site www.hp.com/go/bladesystem/documentation.
2. Install the Blade Switch see (“Installing the Blade Switch into the enclosure” on page 9).
3. Note default network, user name, and password for the HP OA, which can be found on the
tag that shipped with the HP OA. See the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator User
Guide on the HP Web site www.hp.com/go/bladesystem/documentation.
4. Apply power to the enclosures.
5. Use the HP OA for basic setup of the enclosures (including enclosure name and pass-
words). See the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator User Guide.
6. Be sure the HP OA firmware is v2.60 or later.
7. Enclosure Bay IP Addressing is used to specify IP addresses for the interconnect Switches,
which are then provided to the Switches by the OA. Be sure all ProCurve Blade Switch
management interfaces and server blade iLO interfaces have IP addresses and valid
gateway IP addresses using one of the following methods:
• Run DHCP on the management network connected to the OA.
• Configure the OA to set enclosure bay IP addresses.
•StaticmanualIP.
Note For proper management of enclosure devices there must be an Ethernet connection from the
OA module to the external management network. For information on OA module cabling, see
the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator User Guide.

Installation guidelines
Observe the following guidelines:
■To support a redundant configuration for the Blade Switch, install a second Blade Switch
of the same type in an adjacent bay.
■To avoid connectivity loss, do not install different types of Blade Switches in interconnect
bays connected to the same server blade mezzanine card.
■Do not mix the 6120XG or the 6120G/XG Blade Switch with any non-Ethernet switches,
(for example, a Virtual Connect Fibre Channel switch) in interconnect bays connected to
the same server blade mezzanine card because this action generates an enclosure elec-
tronic keying error.
■All 6120XG and 6120G/XG Blade Switches in the enclosure require valid and unique IP
addresses, which must all be on the same subnet. Use a DHCP server or the OA EBIPA
feature to assign each switch an IP address. The switch requires an IP address only if it
needs to be directly accessed over the management LAN. Otherwise the menu and CLI of
the switch can be accessed through the enclosure manager user interface as described on
page 11, “Accessing the Blade Switch from the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator”.

determines the installation location of the interconnect switches.

differ by server blade type.
Installing the Blade Switch into the enclosure
These images are examples only. Your switch may look different.
1. Remove the interconnect blank.

2. Prepare the Blade Switch for installation.
3. Install the Blade Switch into the interconnect bay.
4. If the enclosure configuration includes more than one Blade Switch, install the other Blade
Switches now.
5. Connect the data center network cables to any Blade Switch port not being used.
Note The 1000BASE-SFP, 10GBASE-XFP, and 10-GbE SFP+ ports can be used to connect to the data
center if they are populated with a supported pluggable SFP, XFP, or SFP+ optical transceiver.
See the Installing or Removing SFP (mini-GBIC) or XFP transceivers section (page 13) for
more information.
At this point, the switch is fully installed. See “Getting Started With Switch Configuration”
on page 18 for switch configuration information and for some basic configuration steps. For

Accessing the Blade Switch from the HP BladeSystem Onboard
Administrator
These instructions assume that you have already set up the HP BladeSystem Onboard
Administrator (OA) using the First Time Setup Wizard. See the HP BladeSystem Onboard
Administrator User Guide for details on OA setup. For information on OA command line
interface (CLI) commands, see the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator Command Line
Interface User Guide. Both guides are available at www.hp.com/go/bladesystem/documentation.
1. Connect a workstation or laptop computer to the serial port on the c3000/c7000 OA module
using a null-modem serial cable (RS232).
2. Using a terminal program (such as HyperTerminal or TeraTerm), open a connection to the
serial port using connection parameters of 9600, 8, N, 1.
3. Press Enter. OA prompts you for login information.
4. Enter a valid username and password. The OA system prompt appears.
5. Enter the command:
connect interconnect <bay_number>
where <bay_number> is the number of the bay containing the blade switch. OA connects
you to the initial screen of the blade switch CLI.
6. Press Enter. The blade switch CLI prompt appears You are now ready to enter blade switch
CLI commands.
Note Before accessing the ProCurve Manager (PCM), verify the HP BladeSystem OA firmware is at
revision 2.60 or later. For specific instructions, see the HP Web site www.hp.com/go/bladesys-
temupdates.
For proper operation, always assign an IP address to each server blade iLO and 6120 Blade
Switch. Verify each server blade iLO and interconnect switch has been assigned an IP address
by reviewing the bay summary screens in OA. Each IP address must be valid and unique, and
all iLOs and 6120 Blade Switches must be on the same subnet. For more information, see the
HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator User Guide on the HP Web site www.hp.com/go/
bladesystem/documentation.
(Optional) Connect a Console to the Switch
The switch has a full-featured, easy to use console interface for performing switch management
tasks including the following:
■monitor switch and port status and observe network activity statistics
■modify the switch’s configuration to optimize switch performance, enhance network traffic
control, and improve network security
■read the event log and access diagnostic tools to help in troubleshooting
■download new software to the switch
■add passwords to control access to the switch from the console, web browser interface,
and network management stations
The console can be accessed through these methods:
■Out-of-band: The switch comes with a USB cable for connecting a laptop, to be used as
a console, directly to the switch.

■OnBoard Administrator:
• (preferred) Through the enclosure manager as described on page 11, “Accessing the
Blade Switch from the HP BladeSystem Onboard Administrator”
• Telnet to the out-of-band management port IP address. This is the IP address described
on page 8.
■In-Band: Access the console using Telnet from a PC or UNIX station on the network, and
a VT-100 terminal emulator. This method requires that you first configure the switch with
an IP address and subnet mask by using either out-of-band console access or through
DHCP/Bootp. For more information on IP addressing and on starting a Telnet session, see
the “Getting Started With Switch Configuration” section, and the Management and
Configuration Guide for the Series 6120 Switches, which is on the HP Web site
www.hp.com/go/bladesystem/documentation.
The Switch can simultaneously support six console sessions. One through the USB Console
Port, four through in-band Telnet console sessions, and one through the enclosure manager.
Direct Console Access
To connect a console to the switch, follow these
steps:
1. Connect the laptop or terminal to the
switch’s Console Port using the console
cable included with the Switch.
2. Turn on the laptop or terminal’s power and,
if using a laptop, start the laptop terminal
program.
3. Press [Enter] two or three times and you will
see the copyright page and the message
“Press any key to continue”. Press a key,
and you will then see the switch console
command (CLI) prompt, for example:
ProCurve Switch 6120G/XG#

management of the switch at this time, see the,
“Getting Started With Switch Configuration”
section for some basic configuration steps. For
more detailed information, refer to the
Management and Configuration Guide for the

The blade switch console supports out-of-band access through a direct connection to the mini
USB console port from a Windows computer. To communicate with the blade switch:
1. Download the USB driver onto the PC. To find the driver:
a. Go to www.hp.com/#Support.
b. Click the “Download drivers and software” radio button.
c. Enter “6120XG” or “6120G/XG” in the text box and click “Go”.
d. Click the link for your operating system.
e. Download the Utilities package.
2. Install the driver by double-clicking the HPProCurve_USBConsole.msi file.
3. Connect the small end of the supplied USB console cable to the mini USB port.
