HSS Hire 597 Troubleshooting guide

Cordless Glass
and Tile Cutter
©HSS Hire Service Group Plc 1997 No. 597/01
Group Office: 25 Willow Lane, Mitcham, Surrey CR4 4TS
Hire Shops
For clean accurate cuts in tiles
and glass.
Operating & Safety Guide 597
Apply just enough pressure to ensure reasonable
progress. Too much pressure will damage the disc, the
workpiece, and the machine’s motor.
Make sure you keep your hands clear of the blade
at all times. Don’t be fooled! The diamond blade is
of a smooth appearance, but it can still cut you.
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits. If it will not do what you want with reasonable
ease and speed, assume you have the wrong tool for the
job. Contact your local HSS Hire Shop for advice.
Keep the equipment clean – paying special attention
to the air vents. You will find this less of a chore if you
clean regularly, rather than wait until the end of the
hire period.
Regularly check the water level, and that the
cutting disc has a continuous supply of clean water.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves.
Having lifted the disc clear of the workpiece,
release the ON/OFF trigger to the OFF position
and wait for the disc to stop, before turning off the water
and putting the tool down.
Remove the battery, and empty the water
container, then give the tool a final clean up ready
for return, to your local HSS Hire Shop.
FINISHING OFF
EQUIPMENT CARE
Quick Tip
Because the cutter cuts on the ‘up stroke’, the
workpiece’s upper-most face may be marred by
chipping. It is best to cut with the work face down.
Temporarily fix a timber batten to the work and use
that to guide the cutter.

For advice on the safety and suitability of this
equipment contact your local HSS Hire Shop.
Keep children, animals and bystanders away from
the work area.
Never use this equipment if you are ill, feeling
tired, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
This equipment should only be used by a
competent person who has read and understood
these instructions.
Ensure the work area is well lit and ventilated.
There is a serious risk of personal injury if you do
not follow all instructions laid down in this guide.
Safety Goggles MUST be worn by everyone in
the work area.
Some materials contain substances which,
when inhaled, can be harmful to health.
A suitable mask must be worn when using
this equipment.
Wear practical, protective clothing,
a hard hat and footwear. Avoid loose
garments and jewellery that could catch in moving parts.
Ensure the tool is switched OFF before connecting
its battery. Switch OFF and disconnect the battery
before making any adjustments.
Having switched OFF, always wait for the disc to
come to rest before putting the tool down.
Check the equipment before use. If it shows signs of
damage or excessive wear, return it.
If working above ground-level, work from a
suitable, stable platform – an access tower for
example. Never work from ladders or steps.
Do not work near flammable gasses or liquids, petrol
or paint thinner fumes for example. Keep combustible
materials at a safe distance – at least 5m.
Information on COSHH regulations is available from your
local HSS Hire Shop.
The battery charger is designed to plug straight
into a standard 240V 13A power socket, however,
power must not be supplied from a generator.
To recharge, insert the battery pack into the
charger, then plug the charger into a suitable
power supply and switch the power ON.
Press the red start button and the green light on
the charger will illuminate to confirm that charging
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
GENERAL SAFETY
is occurring. Once the battery is charged the green
light will go out.
If the green light does not illuminate, press the
yellow reset button. If the green light refuses to
illuminate, contact your local HSS Hire Shop
for advice.
The battery is designed with a re-charge period of
approximately 1 hour.
Using electrical equipment in very damp or wet
conditions can be dangerous.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, use a
suitable RCD (Residual Current-Operated Device)
available from your local HSS Hire Shop, or power the
charger from a mains circuit with a built-in RCD.
If the tool fails, or if the charger’s flex or plug gets
damaged, return it. Never try to repair it yourself.
If an extension lead is used for the charger it
should be fully unwound and loosely coiled, away
from the equipment. Never run leads through water,
over sharp edges or where they could trip someone.
Never carry or pull the charger by its flex.
Ensure the battery is fully charged – if you have a
lot of work to do, now is the time to place any
spare battery on charge.
Keep the water bottle fixed to the unit and close
the tap, undo the filler/feed cap and fill the bottle
with clean fresh water and re-fit the cap.
Adjust the depth of cut using the hex key
provided, so that the blade will protrude beyond
the glass/tile by aprox 3mm.
GETTING STARTED
If a mitred cut is required set the angle using the
guide as a reference, (but confirm the angle is correct
using a protractor).
Slide the battery into the handle ensuring it is the
correct way around and hold in place with the
rear clip.
Where appropriate, secure the workpiece in a vice or
with clamps, supporting it on both sides of any cut
line to stop the cutting disc becoming trapped.
With the disc clear of the workpiece, you can now
switch the cutter ON and wait for the disc to reach
working speed.
To switch ON slide the safety tab back and
squeeze the ON / OFF trigger.
Adopt a stable posture with both feet on firm level
ground, do not work in areas where you are forced to
stand on loose debris or on a slippery uneven surface.
Turn ON the water supply then move the tool
along the cut in a straight line, keeping the cutting
disc at a constant angle. Never twist the tool or apply
sideways pressure – the glass/tile could break up and
cause damage or serious personal injury.
