AFewWordsAboutStereoandSurroundSound
HTDspeakersaredesignedtoaccuratelyreproducehighfidelitymusicaswellasdialogandeffects
inmovies.Mostofusarefamiliarwiththeconceptof2-channelaudio,commonlyknownasstereo.
Inahometheaterenvironment,recordingengineers have the option of recording into additional
channels.A majority of today’smoviesare recorded in 5.1 surround sound formats, most often
eitherDolbyDigitalorDTS.Whenthesemoviesareplayedwithadigitalsource,suchasaDVD
player,audiencesathomehavetheopportunitytohearallofthesechannelsiftheirsystemhas
beenequippedwiththeappropriatespeakersforeachchannel. Whenthesemoviesareplayed
throughananalogstereosource,suchasaVCR,a5.1surroundsignalisusuallyavailableinDolby
ProLogic,ProLogicIIorsomeotheranalogmatrixedformat.ProLogicmakesuseofthesame5.1
speakerchannels,althoughthebacktwo(surround)speakerswillreceiveidenticalinformationand
itisnotafullrangesignal.ProLogicIIsendsdiscrete,full-rangechannelstothebacktwospeakers.
ThesubwooferisprovidedthelowfrequenciessenttotheotherchannelsinaDolbyProLogicor
ProLogicIIrecording.Bycontrast,atrue5.1digitalrecordingincludesacompletelyuniquechannel
ofbothlowfrequenciesandeffects(LFE).ThischannelismostoftenreferredtoastheLFEchannel
orsubwooferchannelandrepresentsthe.1ina5.1system.Inmostoftoday’sreceivers,thefive
fullfrequencychannels:frontright,frontcenter,frontleft,rear(surround)rightandrear(surround)
left;are“powered”channels,meaningthereceiverhasbuilt-inamplificationforeachchannel.The
LFEchannelhowever,ismostoftennotpowered.Andbecausethischannelonlyincludesverylow
frequencies,apoweredsubwooferisnecessarytoproducetheLFEchannel.
SpeakerSize
Mostoftoday’shometheaterreceiversallowyoutotellthereceiverwhattypeofspeakersyouare
using.Thisisimportantsinceyoudon’twanttowastepoweracrossafull-frequencysignaltoa
speakerthatcanonlyhandlealimitedrange.Receiverswilltypicallyaskwhetherornotthespeaker
is“small”or“large”.Inmostcases,settingthespeakerto“small”willcauseonlyfrequenciesabove
100 Hz to be sent to the speaker. “Large” allows the full frequency range to be passed to the
speaker.Somereceiverstakethisastepfurtherandallowyoutosetthecut-offfrequency,usually
somewherebetween60and120hz.AllHTDLevelTHREEspeakerswillreproducesignalsbelow
100 Hz, but not as low or with the same authority as the powered subwoofer. Sending the full
frequencytothesespeakerswillnotharmthematmoderatevolumes.However,ifyouoftenplay
yourspeakersatveryhighvolumes,itisbettertosetallbutthetowerspeakerstosmall.Thiswill
preventthesmallerspeakersfrompeakingoutanddistortingwhenstronglowfrequencyinformation
ispresent.Therefore,werecommendthatyoutrybothsettingstoseewhichworksbestinyour
situationandtoyourlisteningtaste.Neverplayaspeakersoloudthatitdistorts.Inmanyreceivers,
settingaspeakerto“small”automaticallysendsthelowfrequenciesthatwouldotherwisegotothat
channeltothesubwooferconnectedtotheLFEchannel.Checkthe“bassmanagement”sectionof
yourreceiver’sowner’smanualtobesure.Thissectionshouldalsoaddresstheoptionsyouhave
forutilizingthepoweredsubwooferinaudio-onlyapplications.

SpeakerDrivers
Speakerdriversareessentiallythemovingcomponentsthatproducesoundfromaspeaker.LevelTHREEbookshelf
andcenterchannelspeakersutilizeamid-rangedriverandhighfrequencydriver.TheLevelTHREETowersinclude
ahigh-frequencydriver,specializedhigh-middriver,anddedicatedmid-lowrangewoofers.
Themid-rangedriverinthebookshelfandcenterspeakerconsistsofanFCDTMCone,apowerfulmagnetand1.5”
voicecoil.FCDTMstandsforFabricCeramicDoping.Alightweightfabricisusedtoproducetheshapeofthecone.A
ceramiccoatingisthenhandappliedtostiffenthecone,whileatthesametimekeepingitlightweight.Finally,athin
polymercoating(doping)isalsoappliedbyhandtohelpimprovethelowerfrequencyresponseandaddwarmthtothe
overalltone.Theresultisamid-rangedriverthatissmooth,punchy,andaccuratewithoutthe“ringing”or“harshness”
oftenassociatedwithmetalcones.
Thespecializedhigh-midrangedriverintheLevelTHREETowerspeakerconsistsofapolymertreated(doped)fabric
domewitha2”voicecoil.Themid-lowrangedriversinclude7”wovenfiberandpulpconeswithaspecialpolymer
coating(doping)anda“lumpy”treatmentthathelpsreducestandingwaves.Thesedriversincludea2”voicecoiland
powerfulneodymiummagnethousedinacastaluminumbasket.
InallLevelTHREEmodels,thehighfrequencydriver,calledatweeter,isconstructedofa.01mmKaptonribbonthat
hasa.02mmaluminumpowderresin“coil”attachedthatinteractswithapowerfulneodymiummagnet.Theresulting
performanceissmoothandextremelynaturalwithaclarityandcrispnessthatisneverharshor“inyourface”.

MountingBracketsandStands
HTDoffersoptionalwall-mountspeakerbracketsandstandsthatareidealforusewithourspeakers.LevelTHREE
bookshelfandcenterchannelspeakersareequippedwithhardwareonthebackthatallowforeasyattachmentto
awall-mountbracket.Thishardwareshouldbeleftinplaceevenifyouarenotusingthebrackets.Removingthis
hardwaremaycause“whistling”throughtheopenholes.Donotovertightenasstrippingofthethreadednutinside
thecabinetcanoccur.Shouldthenutbecomestripped,thespeakermountinghasbeenjeopardizedandthespeaker
shouldNOTbehung.Moredetailedinstructionsareprovidedwithboththebracketsandstands.
SpeakerFeet
LevelTHREEbookshelfspeakershavethreeholesdrilledintothebottom.Youcaninsertthemetaltiptoefeetinto
theseholes,oryoucanusetheholesasaguideforapplyingtherubberhalf-domefeet.Feetallowthespeakercabinet
tobedecoupledfromadjacentobjects.Withoutfeet,aspeaker’svibrationscanbetransferredtoitssurroundings,
potentiallyaffectingthespeaker’sperformance.Weusethreefeet,ratherthanfour,topreventrattlingthatcanresult
from placement on uneven surfaces. Correct placement of the feet will yield an acoustically accurate and sturdy
speaker.Neverplaceobjectsatopthespeaker,asthismayaltertheoverallbalance.Usearubbermallettoinsert
themetaltiptoefeetintotheholes.Onlyinsertthefeetaboutaquarter-inchintothepre-drilledholes.Thiswillallow
youtomoreeasilyremovethemlater,shouldyouchoosetodoso.Feltpadsarealsoprovidedshouldyoupreferto
placethespeakerflatonashelforTV.
5.1SpeakerPlacement
NEVERPLACEASPEAKERWHEREIT,ORTHECABLECONNECTEDTOIT,AREWITHINEASY
REACHOFCHILDRENORPETS.ALWAYSUSEGOODJUDGEMENTANDCOMMONSENSEWHEN
PLACINGASPEAKERWHEREPEOPLEORPETSWILLHAVEACCESSTOITASSERIOUSINJURY
ORDEATHCANOCCURIFTHESPEAKERWERETOFALL.
Allthreeofthefrontspeakers(left,centerandright)areintendedtobedirectionalandshouldbeplacedatapproximately
thesameheight anddistancefrom theideallistening spot.The centerspeakershould beplacedas closetothe
viewingscreenas possible, sothattheaudio appearstocomestraight outofthepicture. Thefront left andright
speakersshouldbeplacedfarenoughfromthetelevisiontoensurethatyoucandistinguishsoundscomingfromthe
leftandright.Typically,placingthefrontleftandrightspeakersbetweensevenandfifteenfeetapartisappropriate.
Manyaudioenthusiastsrecommendpositioningthespeakerssuchthatdrawingalinefromtheleftspeakertothe
listenerandbacktotherightspeakercreatesa45-degreeangle.Thissettinggenerallymimicstheconditionsetby
therecordingengineeratthefilmstudio.
Ideally,thesurroundspeakersshouldbepositionedaboutasfarfromtheideallisteningspotasyouplacedthefront
leftandrightspeakers,andataboutthesameheightorhigher.This,ofcourse,isonlyaguideline.Thesizeand
shapeofyourroomwillalmostcertainlydictateamodificationtothe“ideal”set-up.Often,ahometheaterissetup
inalivingroomwherethelistenerissittingveryclosetothebackwall.Inthiscase,itisusuallybesttopositionthe
surroundspeakerstothesidesofthelistenerasopposedtoonthebackwall.Additionalinformationanddiagrams
areavailableonlineinour“HelpSettingUp”section.Volumeanddistanceadjustmentswithinyourhometheater
receiverwillhelpbalanceyoursystem.
Thepoweredsubwooferideallyshouldbeplacednearthefront,centeroftheroom.However,sincethehumanear
andbrainhasdifficultydistinguishingthelocationorsourceoflowfrequencies,especiallybelow100hz,forpractical
purposes,thepoweredsubwoofercanbepositionedvirtuallyanywhereintheroom.

ThedigitalaudiomultichannelformatdevelopedbytheMovingPictureExperts.5.1referstothefivediscrete,full
bandwidth(20-20kHz)channels-left,right,¢erfronts,plusleft&rightsurrounds-andthe“.1”usuallyrefersto
thelimitedbandwidth(20-120Hz)subwooferchannel.6.1isthesameas5.1onlythereisanadditionalrearcenter
channelwhile7.1hasnorearcenterchannelbutinsteadanadditionalpairofsurroundspeakers.

HookingUpYourSpeakers
HTD speakers utilize quality gold-plated, five-way binding posts in conjunction with a complex high pass and low
passcrossover.Thegold-platedbindingpostsensureanefficienttransferofsignalandpowerfromanystandard
typeofcableorwireconnector,includingbarewire.Forbarewireorpin-typeconnectors,simplythreadthewireor
pinthroughtheholeinthethreadedpostnearthebaseofthebindingpostthentightentheredorblackcollardown
againstit.Spadeconnectorscanbefittedaroundthethreadedpostnearthebase.Again,simplytightentheredor
blackcollaragainstittomaintaintheconnection.Individualorpairedbananaplugscanbeinserteddirectlyintothe
holesatthemouthofthecollarwiththebindingpostsalreadytighteneddown.
Whenconnectingthespeakers,itisveryimportanttoretainthecorrectpolarity.Thismeansthatthewireattached
to the +, red, or positive terminal on one component must be attached to the +, red, or positive terminal on the
correspondingcomponent’sspeakeroutputterminals.Similarly,the-,black,ornegativeterminalsmustconnectto
therespective-,black,ornegativeterminals.Werecommendusing14gaugeoxygen-freecable,althoughthebinding
postscanacceptupto10gauge.
PoweredSubwooferPanelMarkingsandControls

Ifyourreceiver includes adedicatedRCA-type“LFE orSubwooferoutputjack”...use ashieldedsubwoofer
interconnectcable,suchastheHTDCBL-SW30,toconnectthisjacktooneoftheLFEinputjacksonthePowered
Subwoofer.Inthisexample,we’vepluggedintothe“LFEXO-Active”input,whichallowsustoadjusttheFrequency
Crossover(XO)controlonourPoweredSubwoofertoachievethebestblendwiththeotherspeakers.Alternatively,
youcouldplugintothe“LFE-XOBypassed”jackwhichwouldutilizeyourHomeTheaterReceiver’scrossoverpoint
only.WhentheXO-Bypassedinputisused,theVariableFrequency(XO)controlisbypassed.Somehi-endreceivers
offeravariablecrossoverpointforeachchannel’s“BassManagement”.Whenusingthisfeatureinareceiver,itis
usuallybesttousetheSubwoofer’s“XO-Bypassed”inputtoavoidanyadditionalfrequencyfilteringthatcouldadd
“noise”andpossiblycreatea“gap”or“hole”inthefrequencyrange.
ConnectthespeakerstothecorrespondingspeakerjacksonyourHomeTheaterreceiverandfollowtheinstructions
intheReceiver’sOwner’sManualforsettingupyourspeakers.
ConnectingthePoweredSubwoofertoyourHomeTheaterReceiver
If your receiver DOES NOT include a dedicated RCA-type “LFE or Subwoofer output jack”... connect the
SPEAKERcablesfromtheHomeTheaterReceiver’sFRONTLEFTandFRONTRIGHTSpeakerstothe“Speaker
LevelInput”jacksonthePoweredSubwoofer.Next,usespeakercablestoconnectthe“SpeakerLevelOutput”jacks

SettingtheLevelforyourSubwoofer
While listening to music, set the Input Level on the Subwoofer such that the volume blends well with the other
speakers.Oncethislevelisset,itdoesnotneedtobere-adjusted.ThevolumeofthePoweredSubwooferwillmove
upanddownalongwiththeotherspeakersasyouadjustthemastervolumelevelupanddownontheReceiver.
