HOW GPS WORKS
Your Humm nb rd uses GPS to determ ne
your pos t on and d splay t on a gr d.
GPS uses a constellat on of satell tes that
cont nually send rad o s gnals to the earth.
The GPS rece ver on your boat rece ves
s gnals from satell tes that are v s ble to t.
Based on t me d fferences between each
rece ved s gnal, the GPS rece ver
determ nes ts d stance to each satell te.
W th d stances known, the GPS rece ver
mathemat cally tr angulates ts own
pos t on. W th 5 updates per second, the
GPS rece ver then calculates ts veloc ty and
bear ng.
GPS was or g nally ntended for m l tary use; however, c v l ans may
also take advantage of ts h ghly accurate pos t on capab l t es,
typ cally w th n +/– 2.5 to 10 meters, depend ng on your cond t ons
and your Humm nb rd model. Th s means that 95% of the t me, the
GPS rece ver w ll read a locat on w th n +/– 2.5 to 10 meters of your
actual pos t on.
Your GPS rece ver also uses nformat on from WAAS (the W de Area
Augmentat on System), EGNOS (the European Geostat onary
Nav gat on Overlay Serv ce), and MSAS (the MTSAT Satell te
Augmentat on System) satell tes f they are ava lable n your area.

HOW THE HEADING SENSOR WORKS
The magnet c compass s one of the first known nstruments for
nav gat on. It rel es on the earth’s magnet c field to al gn a magnet c
po nter towards North, also known as Magnet c North.
When the Sensor s connected to the
control head, the head ng from the nternal
compass w ll be d splayed n d g tal format.
The Head ng s the d rect on the boat s
po nt ng, where 000° s North, 090° s East,
180° s South, and 270° s West.
Due to w nd and waves, the boat s often
travel ng n a sl ghtly d fferent d rect on
than ts head ng. The d rect on of travel, or
Course Over Ground, s prov ded by the GPS
rece ver. You can use the compass Head ng
w th the GPS Course Over Ground and
Bear ng to nav gate a route.
A compass’ Magnet c North s affected by the local var at ons n the
earth’s magnet c field around the globe. Naut cal charts w ll often
prov de the magnet c decl nat on, or magnet c var at on, for a local
area so that you can confirm that Magnet c North matches True North.
If you have tra lered the boat to a new locat on, the compass’
operat on may also be affected by a d fferent magnet c zone. The
Humm nb rd control head compensates for magnet c decl nat on and
also allows you to make add t onal adjustments from the menu
system. The deta ls of these features are descr bed n th s manual.

metals or near anyth ng that can create a magnet c field.
Hardware and cables that handle large currents, such as
batter es and power cables, are also examples of equ pment that
may cause nterference.
•Reception: Mount the Sensor n an area that has full exposure to
the sky. The effect ve area of recept on s 5° above the hor zon.
•Surface: Whether the Sensor cable w ll be routed down through
the mount ng surface or to the s de, or f you’re us ng a stem
mount, the mount ng surface w ll nfluence how you nstall the
sensor. For deta ls, see Section 2, Install the Sensor.
•Cables: Test run the Sensor cable from the chosen mount ng
locat on to the control head to confirm that the cable s long
enough to accommodate the planned route. See Section 3,
