Please hand these instructions to the stove user when the installation
is complete. Leave the system ready for operation and instruct the
user in the correct use of the appliance and operation of controls.

HERALD 5 & 7 STOVE ASSEMBLY
F LUE C OLLAR
Pla e the flue ollar on the top or rear outlet as required and se ure to the four lo ating tabs inside
the flue outlet using the 6mm nuts & bolts supplied.
B LANKING P LATE
The blanking plate is also fixed to the lo ating tabs using the two ountersunk 6mm bolts & nuts
supplied.
T HROAT P LATE
The throat plate is supported in the stove via the upper bri k-retaining bra ket dire tly below the outlet in the
ba k plate and the baffle support pins on either side.

FIREBRICKS
M ULTIFUEL : -
The rear bri k is fa tory fitted. The side bri ks rest on/behind the multifuel side plate whi h themselves are held
in position by the stati grate.
W OODBURNER : -
The woodburning version only has rear firebri ks, whi h are held at the ba k of the firebox by the upper
bri k-retaining bar.

INSTALLATION
Che k that the himney is in good ondition, dry, free from ra ks and obstru tions. T e diameter of t e
flue s ould not be less t an 150mm and not more t an 230mm for Herald 7, 125mm and not more
t an 230mm for Herald 5. If any of these requirements are not met, the himney should be lined by a
suitable method.
The himney height and the position of the himney terminal should onform to Building Regulations.
A flue draught of minimum 1.5mm to a maximum 2.5mm water gauge is required for satisfa tory applian e
performan e. The flue draught should be he ked under fire at high output and if it ex eeds the re ommended
maximum, a draught stabiliser must be fitted so that the rate of burning an be ontrolled and to prevent
overfiring.
If you have any doubts about the suitability of your himney, onsult your dealer/installer.
The himney must be swept before onne tion to the stove.
An existing firepla e opening an be bri ked up or sealed with a register plate. A short length of flue pipe of
a minimum 152mm internal diameter for Herald 7, 125mm internal diameter for Herald 5, may then be
used to onne t the stove to the himney. This flue pipe should be of ast iron, 316 grade stainless steel or
vitreous enamelled, nominal thi kness 1.2mm. Ensure that the pipe end is no loser than 76mm to the side
or rear himney walls.
Ideally, the old firepla e should be filled in so that there is a smooth streamlined entry into the flueway.
The length of any horizontal run of flue pipe must not ex eed the flue outlet diameter on the stove – 125mm.
It is essential that all onne tions between the stove and himney-flue are sealed and made airtight.
Both the himney and flue pipe must be a essible for leaning and if ALL parts of the himney annot be
rea hed through the stove, a soot door must be fitted in a suitable position to enable this to be done.
The stove an be re essed in a suitable sized firepla e but a permanent free air gap must be left around the
sides and top to improve maximum heat output and for a ess to the rear of the stove. There should not be
any ombustible material within a distan e of 900mm from any surfa e of the stove. In all instan es the stove
should be positioned on an in ombustible hearth. Allow an apron of a least 300mm at the front of the stove
and 150mm on either side. The hearth on whi h the stove is to be pla ed should not be less than 125mm
thi k if the floor is made of ombustible material, and are should be taken to level the stove.
Upon ompletion of installation, the applian e should be he ked under fire for soundness of joints and
seals, and also that all smoke and fumes are taken from the applian e, up the himney and emitted safely.
Care should be taken that all flues, hearths and ombustion air supplies are in a ordan e with the urrent
Building Regulations, Lo al Authority Bye-Laws, British Standards and Codes of Pra ti e.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
AIR CONTROLS
This stove has been designed to burn leaner and more effi iently than a onventional wood burning stove.
If used orre tly this stove will burn far more effi iently than normal with the obvious notable feature
CLEAN GLASS.
However, for t is product to work properly it must be used correctly.
P RIMARY A IR
Primary air is ontrolled via the sliders in the bottom of the doors, this provides a onventional air draught to
the bed of the fire.
S ECONDARY A IR
Se ondary air is ontrolled via the slider above the doors, it is this “airwash” that keeps a lean and
uninterrupted view of the fire, also aiding in good se ondary ombustion of the fuel and redu ing emissions
into the himney and environment.
NOTE: The ‘airwash’ is open when the slider knob is pushed to the right.
D AMPER A SSEMBLY (O PTIONAL )
When burning wood, the flue damper assembly may be fitted. When the damper is set in the open position
the himney draws at full draught, in reasing the volume of airflow through the stove and flue. Shutting the
damper restri ts the flow, slowing the rate of burning.

N OTES ON SOLID FUEL BURNING
Always de-ash before refuelling and do not let the ash build up to the underside of the stati grate.
Solid fuel produ es ash, whi h if allowed to build up will stifle the airflow through the grate and
eventually ause the fire to die.
With some solid fuels a residue of burnt fuel or linker will a umulate on the grate, allow the fire
to go out periodi ally to remove this.
We annot stress firmly enough how important it is to empty the ashpan regularly. Air passing
through the firebed ools the stati grate. Distortion or burning out the grate is nearly always
aused by ash being allowed to build up to the underside of the grate.
N OTES ON W OODBURNING
Wood burns best on a bed of ash and it is therefore only ne essary to remove surplus ash from the
stove o asionally.
Burn only dry, well seasoned wood, whi h should have been ut, split and sta ked for at least
18 months, with free air movement around the sides of the sta k to enable it to dry out. Burning
wet or unseasoned wood will reate tar deposits in the stove and himney and will not produ e a
satisfa tory heat output.
LIGHTING THE STOVE
We re ommend that you have two or three small fires before you operate your stove to its maximum heat
output. This is to allow the paint to ure in steadily and to give a long servi e life of the paint finish. During
this uring in pro ess you may noti e an unpleasant smell. It is non toxi , but for your omfort we would
suggest that during this period you leave all doors and windows open.
First, load the fire with starting fuel, i.e. paper, dry sti ks and/or firelighters in the mode hosen, either wood
or oal.
Light the fire at the base leaving all air ontrols open. Allow the fuel to rea h a steady glow and build the fire
up gradually. On e you have a good fire established a ross the grate bed, further fuel an be added as
required.
When your fuel is well alight you an start to restri t the primary air intake. If you are burning only wood,
the primary air ontrol an be fully losed. If you are burning solid fuel you will require more primary air.
The stove an be banked up for long periods. When burning solid fuel, empty the ashpan. Open air ontrols
and let the fire burn brightly for a short period. Refuel and lose air ontrols, the exa t setting required will
depend on the fuel used and the himney draw so some pra ti e may be ne essary. To revive the fire, open
air ontrols until the fire is burning brightly, de-ash if ne essary (solid fuel only) and refuel. Set air ontrols as
required.

SOLID FUELS
Anthra ite is an approved natural smokeless fuel (not processed) and therefore an vary greatly in quality and
performan e. It generally requires ex ellent air supply and above average fire-bed temperatures to maintain
maximum performan e and with experien e we would suggest that it is used in onjun tion with other
approved manufactured smokeless fuels as per the Solid Fuel Asso iations’ approved list.
Household oal, whi h is a “smokey” fuel, an also be used but note that different types will give different
performan es.
PETROLEUM COKE FUELS OR HOUSEHOLD WASTE SHOULD NOT BE BURNT ON THIS
APPLIANCE

SAFETY NOTES FOR YOUR GUIDANCE
FIRES CAN BE DANGEROUS
– Always use a fireguard in the presen e of hildren, the elderly or the
infirm.
DO NOT OVERFIRE – it is possible to fire the stove beyond its design apa ity, this ould damage the
stove, so wat h for signs of overfiring – if any part of the stove starts to glow red, the fire is in an overfire
situation and the ontrols should be adjusted a ordingly. Never leave the stove unattended for long periods
without first adjusting the ontrols to a safe setting – areful air supply ontrol should be exer ised at all times.
WARNING – FUME EMISSION
Properly installed and operated, this applian e will not emit fumes. O asional fumes from de-ashing and
refuelling may o ur. Persistent fume emission must not be tolerated.
If fume emission does persist, then the following immediate a tion should be taken: -
1. Open doors and windows to ventilate room.
2. Let the fire out, or eje t and safely dispose of fuel from the applian e.
3. Che k for flue himney blo kage and lean if required.
4. Do not attempt to re-light the fire until the ause has been identified.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE
T HROAT P LATE
This should be removed a least on e a month to prevent any build up of soot or fly ash whi h ould lead to
blo ked flueways and dangerous fume emission.
If the throat plate is removed the himney/flue way an be swept through the applian e.
S TOVE B ODY
The stove is finished with a heat resistant paint and this an be leaned with a soft brush. Do not lean whilst
the stove is hot, wait until it has ooled down. The finish an be renovated with a suitable brand of paint.
G LASS P ANELS
Clean the glass panels when ool with a proprietary glass leaner. Highly abrasive substan es should be
avoided as these an s rat h the glass and make subsequent leaning more diffi ult. Wet logs on heated glass, a
badly aimed poker or heavy slamming of the doors ould ra k the glass panels. The glass will not fra ture
from heat.
F IREBRICKS
In normal use, these an last for many years. It is possible however, to ra k them if logs are ontinually
jammed against them or if they are frequently stru k with a poker.
Che k periodi ally for seriously ra ked bri ks, whi h an be repla ed with new.
D OORS
Should the doors require adjustment to maintain their seal, ea h hinge is adjustable. By sla kening the lo king
bolt on the hinge, the doors an be moved in three dimensions aided by the addition or subtra tion of shims
behind the hinge assembly.
C HIMNEY
Che k your himney ea h year before starting to use your stove for the winter. Birds may have nested in the
himney or the masonry may have ra ked. Both the himney and flue pipe must be swept at least on e a year.
