INTRODUCTION:
The Field Calibration Device (FCD) has been designed in response to field Hydrologists’ requests for a device
to check the calibration of Tipping Bucket Rain gauges in the field. It is a light, portable device that will save
hydrologists time and money. The advantage of using a Field Calibration Device is that the Tipping Bucket Rain
Gauges can remain fixed in their location and are therefore only out of service for a very short period of time.

PREPARATION
TheroletheFCDistocheckwhetheryourraingaugeisprovidingaccuratereadingswhenacertain
volumeofwaterisdischargedintotheraingaugecollector.Therefore,priortousingtheFCD,the
raingaugeshouldbecleanedandmaintainedasfollows:
1‐Removetheenclosure,cleanthefunnelandfiltertoensurewaterfromtheFCDisflowingas
itshouldbe
2‐Usingatoothbrushandmethylatedspiritcleanthebucketgentlyfromanysedimentthatis
adheredtotheinternalsurfacesofthebucket.
3‐Dismantlethesyphonandcleanit(refertoraingaugemanualorvideoonthelinkbelow).
4‐Ensurethebucketaxleistippingfreely.
5‐Ensuretheraingaugeissittinglevelbycheckingthebubblelevelonthebase.
6‐Checkthereedswitchoperationontheraingaugeusingamultimeter.
7‐Avoidperformingthecalibrationcheckwhenthereisanyrainfallorstronggustofwind.

OPERATION
Step1:
The Field Calibration Device nozzle is unscrewed from the cylinder, which is in turn filled with ‘CLEAN’
water to the very top.

Step2:
The nozzle is then screwed back on the cylinder and placed through the holding plate which sits on the catch of
any 200 or 203mm Tipping Bucket Rain gauge.
Note:
Itisreallyessentialtowettheraingaugesyphonbeforeperformingthecalibration.Thisaction
willincreasetheaccuracyofthecalibrationresults.
Step3:
A pre-set volume of water will discharge through the Tipping Bucket Rain gauge. This process is to be repeated
a second time for an accurate calibration check. The number of tips can be manually counted or stored on the
data logger for calibration check evidence and then checked with ‘‘Calibration Specifications’’ to confirm that
the results come within the acceptable range. Please note, HyQuest Solutions also provides optional counter
model TRD (Total Rainfall Display) to avoid human manually counted error.

ismainlyusedinthefielditcangetdirtyeasily.

2‐Usemildsoapsolution(donotusemethylatedspiritoranyothersolventthatmaydamage
theFCD)
3‐EnsurethattheFCDdischargetimeisasindicatedinthetablebelow.Ifthedischargerateis
slowerthanthetimeonthetable,useafinetooltocleanthenozzleholeasshowninthe
picturebelow.
