iv 2216 Installation and Initial Configuration Guide
About This Guide
This guide explains how to set up the IBM 2216, perform initial configuration, and
correct some problems that might occur during installation.
Who Should Use This Guide
This guide is intended to be used by the person responsible for installing the 2216.
This person should be familiar with installation and cabling charts.
About the Software
IBM 2216 Nways Multiprotocol Access Services (licensed program number
5765-C90) is the software that supports the IBM 2216. This software has these
components:
¹The base code, which is installed at the factory on the 2216, consists of:
– The code that provides the routing, bridging, data link switching, and SNMP
agent functions for the device.
– The router user interface, which allows you to configure, monitor, and use
the IBM 2216 Nways Multiprotocol Access Services base code that is
installed on the device. The router user interface is accessed locally
through an ASCII terminal or emulator attached to the service port, or
remotely through a Telnet session or modem-attached device.
¹The Configuration Program for IBM 2216 Nways Multiprotocol Access Services
(
Configuration Program
), a graphical user interface that allows you to configure
the device from a stand-alone workstation. The configuration program includes
error checking and online help information.
The configuration program is not preloaded at the factory; it is shipped
separately from the device as part of the software order. (See the
Configuration Program User Guide
, GC30-3830, for the server address and
directories to FTP a copy of the configuration program).
How to Proceed
Note: If you are upgrading from Version 1 Release 1 of the Multiprotocol Access
Services (the operating system software) to Version 2 Release 1 (or higher), see
the upgrading/migrating information in the
Service and Maintenance Manual
.
Installation and Initial Configuration
1Install the IBM 2216 using the
Installation and Initial
Configuration Guide
provided with the product. (Alternatively,
installation by IBM service personnel is available. Contact
your IBM representative for additional information.)
2Connect a terminal to the serial port or PCMCIA modem to
enable you to do the initial configuration steps. (See “Access
Methods” on page 3-1.)

3Access the IBM 2216 firmware to enable you to do initial
configuration. (See “The Firmware Interface” on page B-1.)
4Create network interfaces for each port of each adapter that is
installed in the 2216 using the Add Device command. (See
“Adding an Adapter at Initial Configuration” on page B-4 for
information on using the “Add Device” command.
5Run the “Quick Configuration” program to perform the initial
configuration and activate your IBM 2216. (See step 2 on
page 4-1.)

xii 2216 Installation and Initial Configuration Guide
Chapter 1. Installing the 2216
Before You Begin: The illustrations in this guide represent one possible configuration for the IBM 2216. The
illustrations assume that the redundant power supply is installed and almost all of the slots are filled.
These instructions explain how to rack-mount and surface-mount the IBM 2216. You will need a second person
to help lift the IBM 2216 while it is being mounted.
CAUTION:
A fully populated IBM 2216 weighs about 43.1 kg (95 lb).
1 Unpack and Verify
Unpack the IBM 2216 and verify that, along with this

PCMCIA modem is not available)
Rack-mounting- continue with step 2a.
Surfacing-mounting - continue with step 2b on
page 1-2.
2a Rack-Mounting the 2216
You need the following items:
¹Cables, as required
¹Eight rack-mounting screws
¹Screwdriver
Notes:
1. Have a second person help hold the IBM 2216
while it is being mounted.
2. If you have a shelf for the rack, install it before
continuing.
3. Do not use the installation aid if you have a shelf
installed.
Continue with step 3 on page 1-2.

2b Surface-Mounting the 2216
You need the following items:
¹Cables, as required
Continue with step 9 on page 1-4.
3 (Rack-Mounting)
To make the IBM 2216 easier to lift, remove:
1. The fan tray
2. Each power supply.
To remove them, loosen the screws on each
component and pull the handles.
1-2 2216 Installation and Initial Configuration Guide
4 (Rack-Mounting)
REAR
The mounting brackets are shipped with the flanges
facing the rear:
1. Remove the two screws at the top and bottom of
each bracket
2. Reverse each bracket so that the IBM 2216 can be
rack-mounted
3. Reinstall the four screws.
When the brackets are fitted correctly, the letter
embossed on each bracket is in the top-rear corner; an
A on the right side and a B on the left side.
5 (Rack-Mounting)
The installation aid is a metal bar that supports the
IBM 2216 as you install it in the rack. The installation
aid ensures that the IBM 2216 and rack are lined up
correctly.
Line up the holes in the installation aid with the rack
and install all screws.
Chapter 1. Installing the 2216 1-3
6 (Rack-Mounting)
With the second person’s help, set the IBM 2216 on
the IBM 2216 installation aid or on the shelf. The
mounting brackets keep the IBM 2216 from falling into
the rack during installation.
With the installation aid installed, one person can
steady the IBM 2216 while you complete the next step.
7 (Rack-Mounting)

4
Install the pairs of screws in the order shown.
8 (Rack-Mounting)
Reinstall the fan tray and each power supply, making
sure the screws are secured.
If the power supply resists, shift it to the left. If the fan
tray resists, gently rock it.
9 (Rack- or Surface-Mounting)
If you are installing a PCMCIA modem, slide it into
either of the PCMCIA slots on the system card. Attach
the telephone cable to the modem (a triangle identifies
the top of the cable).
