vDo not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,
maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.
vConnect all power cords to aproperly wired and grounded electrical outlet.
vConnect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached to
this product.
vWhen possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
vNever turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or
structural damage.
vDisconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems,
networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless
instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.
vConnect and disconnect cables as described in the following table when
installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices.

Chapter 2. Installing the tape enclosure
This chapter provides information about unpacking the enclosure and accessory
cartons, setting up the enclosure, installing adrive, and installing the enclosure in
arack.
Unpacking the enclosure and accessory cartons
The following illustrations show the items that come with the IBM 4URack
Mount Tape Enclosure and SCSI accessory kit.

Installation guidelines for rack mount enclosures
Review the documentation that comes with your rack cabinet for safety and
cabling information. Before installing your enclosure in arack cabinet, consider the
following guidelines:
vTwo or more people are required to install the device in arack cabinet.
vEnsure that the room air temperature is below 35°C (95°F).
vDo not block any air vents, usually 15 cm (6 in.) of space provides proper
airflow.
vDo not leave open spaces above or below an installed enclosure in your rack
cabinet. To help prevent damage to enclosure components, always install ablank
filler panel to cover the open space and to help ensure proper air circulation.
vPlan the device installation starting from the bottom of the rack cabinet.
vInstall the heaviest device in the bottom of the rack cabinet.
vDo not extend more than one device out of the rack cabinet at the same time.
vDo not overload the power outlet when installing multiple devices in the rack
cabinet.
Use safe practices when lifting.

Setting up the enclosure and installing adrive
To set up the tape enclosure and install adrive, complete the following steps.
Note: You will need aflat-blade and aPhillips screwdriver during the installation.
1. Review the information in “Safety” on page iii, “Installation guidelines for
rack mount enclosures” on page 4, and the safety documentation that comes
with your rack cabinet.
2. Loosen the six screws of the top of the enclosure; then, remove the cover
from the enclosure.

3. Install the slide rails on the enclosure. (The six 10-32 x3/8-inch screws are
provided in the miscellaneous hardware bag.)
4. Attach the adjustable rear-rack rails to the front-rack rails. (The four 10-32 x
1/2-inch screws and nuts are provided in the miscellaneous hardware bag.)

5. Install both slide-rail assemblies in the rack cabinet:
a. Install ten clip nuts or ten cage nuts as required for your rack cabinet
(clip nuts for round-hole mounting flanges; cage nuts for square-hole
mounting flanges). Use the cage-nut-insertion tool or aflat-blade
screwdriver to install cage nuts.
b. Align the slide rails to the rack-mounting flanges (front and rear). If it is
necessary to adjust the length of the slide rails, loosen the nuts on the
rear of the rails; then, tighten the nuts.
c. Insert and tighten eight M5 screws to secure both slide-rail assemblies.

6. Install the SCSI ID and SCSI signal connectors.
Note: You need aSCSI accessory kit for each SCSI tape drive that you
install in the enclosure. See Figure 2on page 4for more information.
a. Remove the cover plates from the rear of the enclosure.
b. Use the tip of apen or astraightened paper clip to set the ID on the
SCSI ID connector. The rear of the enclosure is marked “0” through “8”,
just above the openings for the SCSI ID connectors. To help avoid
confusion, set the SCSI ID on the connector to match the marking on the
rear of the enclosure.
c. Orient the SCSI ID connector with the “R” marking facing up; then,
insert it into the opening and press it firmly in place.
d. Insert the SCSI signal connector into the opening in the enclosure; then,
insert and tighten the screws to secure the connector.

7. Install the drive:
a. Connect the SCSI signal cable that comes with the drive to the SCSI
connector on the inside of the enclosure.
b. Remove the filler panel from the front of the enclosure.
c. Slide the drive into the enclosure; then, insert and tighten four screws to
secure the drive. (The four screws come with the drive.)

8. Connect the power, ID, and SCSI signal cables to the rear of the drive.

9. Install the cover on the enclosure and tighten the six screws.

10. Install the tape enclosure in the rack:
a. Extend both slide rails out of the rack cabinet until they lock.
b. Align the rails on the sides of the enclosure with the slide rails in the
rack cabinet; then, slide the enclosure into the rack until it locks into
place.
c. Insert and tighten two M5 screws on the front of the enclosure to secure
the enclosure to the rack.

11. Attach the external cables to the enclosure:
a. Attach the SCSI signal cable to the host; then, connect the other end of
the SCSI signal cable to the connector on the rear of the enclosure.
b. Connect the power cord to the enclosure; then, plug the power cord into
aproperly grounded electrical outlet.
