Chapter 1. Purpose and description for increasing the
capacity of the TS7620 Appliance Express, ProtecTIER V3.3.2
This document describes the procedure for increasing the capacity of the 3959 SM2
server from 6 TB to 12 TB usable storage. This procedure is accomplished by using
the IBM System Storage®ProtecTIER®Entry Edition 12 TB Capacity disk (form
number GA32-2222).
Intended audience for this TS7620 Appliance Express, ProtecTIER
V3.3.2 document
This publication is intended for customers who want to increase the storage
capacity on their 3959 SM2 server from 6 TB to 12 TB.

Help and service
In the US or Canada, you can call 1 (800) IBM SERV for help and service. You
must choose the software or hardware option when you call for assistance. Before
you call for support, be sure to have your Software Customer Number available.
Choose the software option if you are uncertain whether the problem involves the
TS7620 Appliance Express®hardware. Choose the hardware option only if you are
certain the problem solely involves the TS7620 Appliance Express hardware.
When you call IBM for service for the TS7620 Appliance Express follow these
guidelines for the software and hardware options:
Software option
Identify the TS7620 Appliance Express as your product and supply your
customer number as proof of purchase. The customer number is a
seven-digit numeric code (0000000 - 9999999) assigned by IBM when the
PID is purchased. It is on your customer information worksheet or on the
invoice from the software purchase.
Note: If asked for an operating system, say "Storage".
CAUTION:
If you supply an incorrect customer number, you might be denied
support for your software. Keep track this important information at the
time of purchase.
Hardware option
Provide the four-digit machine type and the product serial number for the
hardware component that is exhibiting a problem. For example: 3959 78
00001.

With the original purchase of the TS7620 Appliance Express, ProtecTIER V3.3.2,
you have access to extensive support coverage. During the product warranty
period, you can call the IBM Support Center (1-800-426-7378 in the US) for product
assistance that is covered under the terms of the hardware IBM warranty or the
software maintenance contract that comes with product purchase.

Important: The TS7620 Appliance Express hardware components have more
support requirements and restrictions. If you experience problems with the
hardware after installation, refer to the support information in the chapter called
"Servicing the components" in the IBM System Storage TS7610 and TS7620
ProtecTIER Deduplication Appliance Express User's and Maintenance Guide, v3.3,
GA32-0916.
When you call, have the following information available for the component:
vThe machine type and serial number, or the software identifier. The software
identifier can be either the product name (TS7620 Appliance Express) or the
Product Identification (PID) number.
vThe serial number or your proof of purchase.
vA description of the problem.
vThe exact wording of any error messages.
vThe hardware and software configuration information
If possible, have access to your computer when you call.
In the US and Canada, these services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In the UK, these services are available Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. In all other countries, contact your IBM reseller or IBM marketing
representative.

Chapter 2. Prerequisites for the TS7620 Appliance Express,
ProtecTIER V3.3.2
The following prerequisites must be met before you upgrade the software:
vThe microcode level is 3.2 or greater.
vThe system reports no existing errors that might prevent a successful upgrade.
vAll ProtecTIER services are started.
Note: The SM2 base unit can increase capacity from 6 TB to 12 TB. If you need
capacity beyond 12 TB, purchase an SM2 expansion unit to increase capacity to 23
TB. You can increase capacity of an SM2 to 35 TB with two SM2 expansion units.
Verify that the system is at the correct code level for the TS7620
Appliance Express, ProtecTIER V3.3.2
You must verify that the 3959 SM2 server is at the correct code level and size to
increase the storage capacity.
About this task
This task must be completed before you increase the storage capacity of the 3959
SM2 server.
Procedure
To verify that theProtecTIER level is at the correct code level on the server, and
that the system is the correct size for increasing the capacity, perform the following
steps:
1. Log in to the system with user name ptconfig and password ptconfig. The
ProtecTIER Service menu opens.

If you do not want to upgrade the version of ProtecTIER code on the server,
and you want only to increase the storage capacity while the server remains at
the older level of code, see the previous version of this document, the IBM
System StorageTS7620 ProtecTIERv3.3 Deduplication Appliance Express Increasing
Capacity on the 3959 SM2 from 6TB to 12TB (Feature Code 9317). This document is

If you want to upgrade the server to ProtecTIER v3.3 before you increase the
storage capacity, see the instructions in the IBM System Storage TS7610 and
TS7620 ProtecTIER Deduplication Appliance Express Software Upgrade Guide, v3.3,
SC27-3641. After you complete the ProtecTIER upgrade, return to this
document and proceed to Chapter 3.
4. Verify that the ProtecTIER version line displays version 3.2 or higher.
5. Verify that the size the Package name line displays.
If the line displays PT_MD5_TS7620_6TB_V3.3.90.0-full.x86_64.tar or
PT_MD5_TS7620_5TB_V3.3.90.0-full.x86_64.tar, go to “Increasing capacity
through the ProtecTIER V3.3 Service menu.”
If the line displays PT_TS7620_12TB the storage capacity is already at 12 TB (10.5
TiB). Go to “Configure the increased capacity” on page 9.
Increasing capacity through the ProtecTIER V3.3 Service menu
Use the following procedures to increase the capacity of the 3959 SM2 server from
6 TB to 12 TB through the ProtecTIER Service Menu.

Prepare the 3959 SM2 server
Before you begin
Ensure no backup or restore activity is taking place.
About this task
In this task, you prepare the 3959 SM2 server for the storage capacity upgrade.
Procedure
To prepare the 3959 SM2 server for the procedures to increase capacity:
1. If a keyboard and monitor are not connected to the 3959 SM2, connect a USB or
PS2 keyboard and a graphics capable monitor.
2. If the system is not powered-on, power it on using the power pushbutton at
the upper left of the front panel. Allow the system to complete the start cycle.
3. At the login prompt, log in with the user name ptconfig and password
ptconfig. The ProtecTIER Service menu opens.
4. If the DVD drive that came with the server is not attached, attach it to the USB
port at the back of the 3959 SM2 server.
Upgrade the server capacity
Before you begin
The following procedures assume that the server is running ProtecTIER V3.3.2 or
higher. For more information, see Chapter 2, “Prerequisites for the TS7620
Appliance Express, ProtecTIER V3.3.2,” on page 5. Complete the “Prepare the 3959
SM2 server” procedure before you upgrade the server capacity.
Ensure you install from DVD or download, the correct capacity version code for
your particular model to reduce incompatibility in later releases.
About this task
This task describes how to install the ProtecTIER upgrade application, and how to
increase the capacity of the 3959 SM2 server. The capacity upgrade becomes
effective after you restart your system.
Procedure
To install the ProtecTIER application and increase the capacity of the 3959 SM2
server:
1. Log in to the ProtecTIER Service menu with user name ptconfig and password
ptconfig. The ProtecTIER Service menu opens.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions to prepare the server for the capacity
upgrade.
a. When the message Locating the CDROM device...done displays, put the
ProtecTIER code disk in the DVD tray, close the tray and press Enter
b. After the disk mounts, the code package is extracted.

4. A prompt might ask if you want to stop the VTFD service and continue. Type
yes to continue.

5. When the restart is complete, the increased capacity is installed.
Important: Following the restart, certain conditions might cause the bottom
LED on all 12 HDDs to illuminate as solid amber. If this situation occurs, stop
what you are doing and contact IBM support for assistance. See “Getting help
by telephone” on page 2, for instructions.
Configure the increased capacity
Before you begin
Allow the server to restart so that all services are running before you configure the
increased capacity.
Procedure
To configure the increased capacity:
1. Log in to the ProtecTIER Service menu with user name ptconfig and
password ptconfig. The ProtecTIER Service menu opens.

Chapter 3. Upgrading the ProtecTIER software to version 3.3.2
from version 3.2.x using ProtecTIER Manager
This section describes the process for upgrading ProtecTIER servers to version 3.3.2
from version 3.2.x or higher using ProtecTIER Manager.
Important: Ensure you install from DVD or download, the correct capacity version
code for your particular model to reduce incompatibility in later releases

Checking the ProtecTIER version for servers at ProtecTIER version
3.2.x or higher
Check the ProtecTIER version on servers at ProtecTIER version 3.2.x or higher.
Procedure
Perform this procedure on each server for which you need version information.
Make note of the ProtecTIER version for each server to verify that the fix update
you are applying is a later version of ProtecTIER than the version currently
installed.
1. Log in to the server on which you are performing the update. At the login
prompt, log in with the ID ptconfig and the password ptconfig.
2. The ProtecTIER Service main menu is displayed.

4. Select the option to Display version information. The ProtecTIER version is
shown in the first line of output, in the first three digits after the colon. The
version information looks similar to the following example message:
PT version : 3.3.xx.x
5. Record the ProtecTIER version. Verify that the fix update you are applying is a
later version than the currently installed version.
6. Continue on to “Downloading ProtecTIER version 3.3.2.”
Downloading ProtecTIER version 3.3.2
Use these procedures to download ProtecTIER version 3.3.2 from the IBM website
if you did not obtain the IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 DVD
or the IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 DVD from IBM.
Before you begin
If you already have the ProtecTIER version 3.3.2 software package on a DVD from
IBM, you should skip this section and go to “Upgrading to ProtecTIER version
3.3.2 from version 3.2.x or higher using ProtecTIER Manager” on page 16.
About this task
Important: Always consult the release notes for the software package, available on
the ProtecTIER fix update (patch) page of the IBM website. Also note that all
package names and versions listed in this section are examples only. The exact
package filenames can differ.

Procedure
Sign in to ibm.com, find the correct software package, and download the software
package.
1. Go to www.ibm.com.
2. Click the Sign in link in the masthead and log in using your IBM user ID. If
you do not have an IBM user ID, follow the procedures to create one from
any IBM web page.
Note: If you need help with the login, go to the Help and FAQ for
authentication website: https://www.ibm.com/account/profile/.
3. From the Home page, click: Support & Downloads >Downloads >Fixes,
updates & drivers.
4. Click the Go to quick start link in the upper left corner of the web page. The
IBM Support Portal - Quick start page opens.
5. Under 1. Choose your products:
a. Click the Search radio button.
b. Type: ProtecTIER in the empty field.
c. Select the check box for the product or products for which you want to
download files.
6. Under 2. Choose your page, click the Downloads radio button and click
Continue.
7. In the Downloads and fixes box, click the downloads link for the applicable
ProtecTIER product, such as View TS7610 Deduplication Appliance
(3959-SM1) ProtecTIER Appliance Edition downloads. You might need to
hover the mouse over the link to get the full text of the link to appear. The
Select fixes page opens.
8. From the Results list, click the most recent entry, such as v3.3.x, for the
product you specified, where v3.3.x is the most current version of ProtecTIER
version 3.3.2 available for download. The Download options page is
displayed.
9. In the Download Options box, click the radio button for Download using
bulk FTP. Select the checkbox to include prerequisites and co-requisite fixes.
Click Continue . The Terms and Conditions page is displayed.
10. Read the information and then click: I agree.
Depending on the product you selected, the
PT_TS7610_Medium_V3.3.0.x.x86_64.tar or
PT_TS7610_Small_V3.3.0.x.x86_64.tar dialog box, opens.
11. Select Save file and click OK.
The ProtecTIER software fix update downloads to the local hard disk drive.
12. Copy the downloaded PT_TS7610_Medium_V3.3.0.x.x86_64.tar or
PT_TS7610_Small_V3.3.0.x.x86_64.tar file to a DVD.
Use this disk to perform the fix update.
13. Go to “Upgrading to ProtecTIER version 3.3.2 from version 3.2.x or higher
using ProtecTIER Manager” on page 16.

Upgrading to ProtecTIER version 3.3.2 from version 3.2.x or higher
using ProtecTIER Manager
Use these procedures to upgrade from version 3.2.x or higher to ProtecTIER
version 3.3.2. For the SM2, you cannot upgrade the code from 3.1.8 to 3.2. You can
only upgrade from 3.2.x to version 3.3.2 or from version 3.3.2 to a higher level of
version 3.3.2.
Procedure
1. Open the ProtecTIER Manager. This action displays the ProtecTIER Manager
splash screen and a message that the nodes are initializing.
2. After the nodes initialize, ensure that the All systems view is selected from
the drop down menu in the left hand navigation.
Note that when you start the ProtecTIER Manager, the content page for All
systems view does not display any systems. This is normal. The systems will
display after you log in, and the column headings in the All systems view
will change after you log in. You will be instructed when to log in later in this
procedure.

3. From the pull-down menu in the left hand navigation, select the system for
which you want to perform a code upgrade by selecting a system from the
drop down menu. Note that the column headings for System Name, Status,
Health, Used (Nom), Allocable (Nom), Storage Saving, Replication
Throughput, and Backup Throughput display after you log in.
