Whenusingelectricalequipment,basicsafetyprecautions

•Removethepowercordfromtheunitand/ orpowersource,
todisconnectthepower,whenservicing,cleaning,orforany
otherreason.

Warnings
Magnetism!
Thisinstrumentcreatesa magnetic field, andshouldnotbe
usedbyindividualswithcardiacpacemakers.Cautionshould
alsobeobservedwhenusingthisinstrumentneardatastor-
agedevices,aslossofdatamayresult.
PTFE
WhenusingPTFE-coatedmagneticbars,pleasepayatten-
tiontothefollowing:
ChemicalreactionsofPTFEoccurincontactwithmoltenor
dissolvedalkalineandalkalineearthmetals,aswellaswith
fine-particlepowdersofmetalsofthe2.and3.groupofthe
periodicalsystemofelementsattemperatureabove300to
400°C.Onlyelementaryfluorine,chlorinetrifluorideand
alkalinemetalsdoattackPTFE.Halogenhydrocarbons
havea reversibleswellingeffect.

TheIKA®RHbasicisa magneticstirrerthatutilizesa ceram-
ichotplatesurfacefortheplacementofbeakers.Itisusedin
laboratoriesofthechemicalindustry,pharmaceuticalindustry
anduniversities.
Themixingintensitydependsonthemotorspeedandthesize
andshapeofthemagneticstirringbar.
Thisproductisforlaboratoryuseonly.
Unpacking
Pleaseunpacktheinstrumentcarefullyandlookforanydam-
age. Itisimportanttorecognizetransportationdamagewhen
unpacking.Ifthisisthecase,animmediatefactualreport
shouldbefiledwiththecarrier.

Setting upthe instrument
Please pay attention tothe ambientconditionslisted inthe
technicaldatasection(temperature and humidity).
Start-up
Beforestarting upthe instrument,pleasecheck the conformi-
ty ofthe voltageindicated onthe ID-platewithyourmainvolt-
age.
If the voltagedoes not match, the instrumentshould notbe
operated.
Connect the instrumentonly toa groundedsocket.
The two functions"Stirring" and "Heating" canbe started
simultaneously:
Stirring
• The stirringfunction is started,controlled, and stoppedwith
therightcontrolknob:
•Place the magnetic barinthe vessel, and thenplace the
vessel inthe middle ofthe hotplate.
•Turn the rightcontrolclockwise, the greenStirindicatorlight
comes on.
•Speedcontrol: By turning the controlclockwise, the motor
speed canbe adjustedfrom 150to1200 rpm.Themagnet-
ic bar turnscounterclockwise.Thefigures 1to10areforref-
erenceonly.
• To stop the Stirringfunction,turn the StirControlKnobcoun-
terclockwise.

REMARKS
Magneticbars:
There are several different magnetic bars on the market. Aside from
speed, the intensity of stirring depends on the shape andthe size of
the magnetic bar. For best results, IKA® recommends the IKAFLON"
stirring bar40mmin length. Donotuse magnetic bars over 60mm in
length.
Beakers:
For effective stirring, the beaker or vesselused must be permeable toa
magnetic field, (a non-ferrous material). Glass, Austenitic stainless steel,
or aluminum are acceptable.
Viscosity of liquids:
Forliquidsabove 500 mPas the coupling between the magnets isnot
strong enough to turn the magnetic bar.
Therefore itisnot recommended tousetheRH basic for thispurpose.

Heating
Theheatingfunctionisstarted,controlledandstoppedwith
theleftcontrolknob:
• Placethemagneticbarinthevessel,andthenplacethe
vesselinmiddleofthehotplate.
• Turntheleftcontrolclockwise,theamberTempindicator
lightcomeson.
• Temperaturecontrol:Byturningthecontrolclockwise,the
temperatureofthehotplatesurfacecanbeadjustedfrom50
to450°C.
• TostoptheHeatingfunction,turntheHeaterControlKnob
counterclockwise.
REMARKS
Heating power:
The heating power - 500 Watts - is concentrated in the center of the
hotplate. Thisavoidsheat lossand acceleratesthe rise in temperature
in the beaker.
Hotplate:
Theglass-ceramic surface is resistantagainst most media, butit can
bechipped or cracked if subjectedto impacts. Theceramicplate is sur-
rounded byan aluminum frame to protect it from side impacts. If the
Hot plate surface becomes damaged in any way, discontinue use
immediately, and consultthe factory for repair or replacement.
Temperature in the beaker:
Unlessspecial reasons warrant,stirring should be used togetherwith
heating. Thisimproves the heat distribution in the media and avoids
retardation of boiling. For accurate automated temperaturecontrol we
recommend the useof the ETS-D4 Electronic ContactThermometer.
Youcan set thedesired temperaturedigitallyand read theactualtem-
perature atany time. At the rear of the instrument isa DINconnector
for the ETS-D4. Switch off the heating function and remove the gray
Contact Plug from theDIN connector beforeplugging in the ETS-D4.
When using the ETS-D4, change between A, B or C mode, by first
turningtheheatercontrol-knoboff, which willalso turnthe ETS-D4off.
With the ETS-D4 off,press and hold down the "+" keyonthe ETS-D4
whileturning the heater control knob fully on, then release the "+"key
on the ETS-D4 once youseethe display appear. Refer to your ETS-
D4 manual for operatinginstructions.
Note:
When working without a contact thermometer, the gray Contact
Plug provided must be installed in the DIN connector, asthe
heating function will not operate without it.
When working with a contact thermometer the heater switches off
automatically if theplug of thecontact thermometer is unplugged unin-
tentionally.This isan additional safetyfeature.

Temperingflammableliquids:
For temperingflammableliquids, an external On/Off temperature con-
troller (not included with the magnetic stirrer) is requiredand must be
installed. The controller switches off the magnetic stirrer before the
media reaches the ignitionpoint.
Safetyfeature:
Theunit has an additionalinternal temperaturesensor which willshut
the heating function off, in the event of a temperature control mal-
function.
Switch off theheat controlknob, allow the unit to cool down, andthen
switch the heat control knob on again.
Cleaning
•Unplugthemagneticstirrer.
•Cleancarefullywitha dampclothandwarmwater.
•Donotcleanwithacetoneorotherorganicliquids,except
alcohol.
•Inextremecasesmildalcoholmaybeused.
•Rinseanddrythoroughly.
•Toavoidelectricalshock,donotopenthehousing.Refer
servicingtoqualifiedpersonnelonly.
•Neverplacetheequipmentinwaterorotherliquids.
