2 DESCRIPTION
The LSU80A is a general purpose load suppor uni designed o ac as a permanen power
supply o main ain backup ba ery sys ems whils al erna ive sources of power are ei her
imprac ical or unavailable, such as running diesel engines during main enance programs or
removal of main power sys ems during main enance.
The LSU80A can suppor bo h 12V and 24V sys ems by simple manual vol age adjus men ,
wi h a curren capaci y of up o 80 amperes.
7 segmen displays con inuously shows bo h se vol age and curren draw.
Vol age ou pu can be rimmed in approxima ely 0.1V s eps during opera ion o offse cable
drops and/or varia ions in demand which crea e excessive demand on he backup ba eries.
Ou pu is enabled or disabled by run and s op bu ons.
In ernal variable speed fans are employed o ensure he LSU80A opera es a a reasonable
empera ure.
The LSU80A is designed o opera e from a s andard domes ic 13A ou le .
The LSU80A has a simple user calibra ion procedure o ensure he displays show accura e
readings.

INSTALLATION
.1 POSITIONING THE EQUIPMENT
The LSU80A should be moun ed on a level surface such as a workbench, s urdy shelf or a
rolley. The uni should be si ed so ha a leas 10cm of airspace is available all round he lef
and op of he uni and a leas 20cm on he righ hand side o allow free movemen of air
required for cooling.
The LSU80A is supplied fi ed wi h a s andard UK hree pin plug on 3m of lead.
The load is connec ed via wo rubber insula ed cables 3m in leng h. The cables are supplied
fi ed wi h 8mm ring crimps and keyed ma ing connec ors for connec ion o he LSU80A. The
cable has a cross sec ion of 25mm2 per conduc or. While opera ing he uni a very high
curren s he leads should be laid ou in such a manner as o aid cooling.

.2 CONTROLS AND INDICATORS
.2.1 Front panel
A) Main inpu supply swi ch and circui breaker.
B) Off push bu on. Pressing his while he uni is running and providing ou pu power will
s op he ou pu power.
C) This indica or will be illumina ed when he uni is s opped and no ou pu ing power.
D) This indica or will be illumina ed when he uni is running and ou pu ing power.
E) ON push bu on. Pressing his when he uni is s opped will cause he uni o provide he
ou pu power.
F) Nega ive ou pu erminal.
G) Posi ive ou pu erminal.
H) Ou pu pro ec ion circui breakers.
I) Up/Down push bu on. Pressing  while he uni is running and providing ou pu power
will cause he ou pu vol age o be increased. Pressing  while he uni is s opped will
cause he display brigh ness o be increased. Pressing  while he uni is running and
providing ou pu power will cause he ou pu vol age o be reduced. Pressing  while
he uni is s opped will cause he display brigh ness o be increased.
J) Vol age indica ion. While he uni is swi ched on i will show he vol age presen a he
ou pu erminals in 0.1V s eps.
K) When he uni is running and providing ou pu power i will show he number of amps
being provided in 1A s eps.

4 OPERATION
Before connec ing o he load for he firs ime he LSU80A has o be se o he nominal vol age of
he load sys em i is going o supply. The following s eps mus be followed prior o connec ing o
he load.
Apply power o he LSU80A wi h load unconnec ed. Power swi ch pressed o he down
posi ion.
Press he RUN bu on and check he ou pu s a e RUN LED is li GREEN and he STOPPED LED
is no li .
The VOLTAGE display will show he value of ou pu vol age ha is curren ly se .
Use he OUTPUT TRIM  push bu ons o se he ou pu vol age display o he load
vol age required. This se ing will be remembered when power is removed. No e if you press
and hold ei her he  push bu ons he adjus men will be con inuous.
Press he s op bu on and check he RUN LED is no li and he STOPPED LED is li .
The vol age display will slowly reduce o zero, or will fall o zero very rapidly if he load is
connec ed.
A his poin he load can be connec ed.
If any residual vol age is shown on he VOLTAGE display his will reduce very rapidly o zero.
If he load already has a vol age presen , such as a ba ery main ained sys em hen he
VOLTAGE display will show his value.
The following s eps are followed upon equipmen connec ion.
Press he START push bu on and verify he RUN LED is li and he STOPPED LED is no li .
The VOLTAGE display will show he ou pu vol age.
The CURRENT display will show he ou pu amps being drawn from he uni .
When he ou pu vol age is no longer required press he STOP push bu on.
A very high curren s he vol age drop in he leads may no provide enough vol age a he
equipmen .
To overcome his high vol age drop he ou pu vol age can be rimmed by pressing he
OUTPUT TRIM  push bu ons o se he desired ou pu . This se ing will be remembered
when power is removed. No e if you press and hold ei her he  push bu ons he
adjus men will be con inuous.
On ba ery main ained sys ems cau ion mus be observed when using he rim fea ure as no
o overcharge he ba ery as high vol ages will cause some of he curren o be passed o he

safely cool down prior o moving.
Af er pressing STOP o remove he ou pu disconnec he load.
I will be no ed ha he fans will reduce o a low se ing and hen s op.
Press he START push bu on, he display will show he vol age ha was se .
I will be no ed ha he fans will hen s ar up again and run slowly while he PSU uni s are
cooled.
Once he fans have s opped i is safe o remove power from he uni by moving he swi ch o
he up off posi ion.

5 CALIBRATION
The LSU80A has wo displays which show Vol age and Curren . These are elec ronic displays
which will require regular checking for heir accuracy. In elligen Charging recommends ha he
calibra ion check procedure is followed annually.
To calibra e he uni he following equipmen will be required.
1.Calibra ed vol me er capable of reading 24V o one decimal place.
2.Calibra ed amme er capable of reading up o 80A o one significan digi , or a calibra ed
amme er shun and millivol me er combina ion.
The equipmen will need o be connec ed as shown in he following figures.

CURRENT MEASUREMENT
5.1 CHECKING PROCEDURE
5.1.1 Voltage validation
Wi h no load connec ed o he LU80A swi ch on and press he START push bu on.
Using he OUTPUT TRIM  push bu ons se he ou pu vol age o 24.0V. No e if
you press and hold ei her he push bu ons he adjus men will be con inuous.
Wi h he calibra ed vol me er connec ed o he ou pu erminals verify ha he vol age
reading is 24.0V +/- 0.2V
If he vol age is ou side of olerance follow he ADUSTMENT PROCEDURE for vol age.
5.1.2 Current validation
Wi h a load which will give a s eady 50A connec ed o he LU80A swi ch on and press
he START push bu on.

Then release he push bu ons.
The GREEN RUN LED should hen flash a a s eady ra e.
By using he OUTPUT TRIM  push bu ons adjus he displayed vol age so ha i
ma ches as near as possible he vol age measured on he calibra ed vol me er
connec ed o he ou pu erminals. No e if you press and hold ei her he push
bu ons he adjus men will be con inuous.
Once comple e press he START push bu on once and verify ha i s ops flashing and
remains s eady.
Press he STOP push bu on.
Calibra ion vol age adjus men is comple e.
5.2.2 Current adjustment
Wi h a load which will give a s eady 80A connec ed o he LU80A swi ch on and press
he START push bu on.
To ge he uni in o calibra ion adjus men mode press he START push bu on and
he OUTPUT TRIM  push bu on bo h a he same ime.
Then release he push bu ons.
The GREEN RUN LED should hen flash a a s eady ra e.
By using he OUTPUT TRIM  push bu ons adjus he displayed curren so ha i
ma ches as near as possible he curren measured on he calibra ed amme er
connec ed o he ou pu erminals. No e if you press and hold ei her he push
bu ons he adjus men will be con inuous.
