SMS Disable Data

The eSAM and Ultra eSAM modems can receive and respond to SMS Messages using the 4G Mobile
Network. This capability can be used to monitor the modem, and to send it commands remotely.
In this specific example, we will explain how to disable data services to devices connected to the eSAM,
without disabling data to the eSAM itself. This means that the modem will still be visible using its Web UI, but it will no
longer advertise itself to connected devices as an internet gateway.
This will be achieved by sending SMS commands to the modem. Please see the related ‘SMS User Guide’for
general instructions on all the SMS commands available for the eSAM.

This guide assumes that you have already configured your modem to receive SMS commands. The easiest
way to check this is to send the eSAM the following test message:
reboot;
Once this message is received, the eSAM will send a response message confirming that it has received your
instruction and will then restart itself. In test conditions, you will see the modems status lights go out as the modem
reboots.

To prevent devices connected to the eSAM from using it as a gateway, we will be disabling the Masq (also
called the Masquerade) service running on the eSAM. This service advertises to devices that are connected to the
eSAM that it has access to the internet, and that it should be sent any packets connected devices want to send to the
internet.
Once this function is removed, connected devices will not be aware that the eSAM is an internet gateway and so will
not send it any internet packets
1. Send the eSAM the SMS command ‘masq;delete;modem’
This command will remove the modem interface from the list of masq interfaces. Please wait until receiving a
confirmation message from the eSAM, as sometimes it will take time for an SMS message to be transmitted
depending on the network quality.
2. Once you have received the ‘Masq delete success’confirmation message, send the eSAM the SMS
command ‘reboot;’. Rebooting the modem will cause any connected devices to reconnect once the modem
comes back online, at which time they will notice that the modem is no longer running the Masq service.
3. Wait while the modem reboots. Once the modem restarts, you will be able to access the modem using its
Web Interface, but any connected devices will lose their connectivity. The below log shows the status of a
device trying to ping an online server while this process takes place.

Enabling internet access follows a similar procedure to disabling it.
1. Send the eSAM the SMS command ‘masq;add;modem’
Please until you receive a confirmation message before proceeding.
2. Reboot your modem using the ‘reboot;’command.
3. As the modem reboots, connected devices will be able to use it as an Internet gateway
