Thishand-heldcomputeroffersaneasytoreadLiquid
CrystalDisplay(LCD)withtouchscreen.Thedisplay
shows statusmessages,keyed-inentries,customerorprod-
uctlists,calculations,and promptsfor responses.Thetouch
screencanbeusedwithastylus,oryourfingertochoose
functions,recordsignatures,orenterdata.
Adjustingthecontrastsettingforthedisplayisdoneby
pressingthegoldShiftkeyandtapeitherthe1(increase)or
2(decrease)keyuntil youachievethedesiredlevel. Of
course,thiswill dependonifthesekeyshavenotbeenpro-
grammedforotherfunctions.
Backlight
Yourhand-heldcomputerdisplayandkeyboardcomes
equippedwitha backlight.Backlightingprovidesagreat
benefitindarkconditions.
Backlightingdoes,however,reducebatterylife,therefore,
turnoff thebacklightwhendoneusing.
Toturnthebacklighton,press thegoldShiftkeyandthe3
key.Toturnthebacklightoff,press goldShiftandthe3key
again.Theamountoftimethebacklightstaysonbefore
shuttingitselfoff is setandcontrolledthroughtheConfig-
urationProgram.
Battery
"NOTE:It isimportant tocharge yourhand-heldcomputerforatleast14
hoursbeforeyou useit the first time.Thisensuresthatboththe
backup batteryand the main batterypack arefully charged.
Thishand-heldcomputerusesa 1500 mAhourlithiumion
rechargeablemainbatterypack.Yourhand-heldcomputer
cancheckbatterycapacityby variousmethods. One,the
batterypackhasfourLEDsthatwill displayremainingca-

pacitywhentwo ofthecontactsaretouchedat thesame
time.More onthisinSection2onpage2-9.Asecondmeth-
odistouseasoftwarefuelgaugebasedontheAPM1.1

Ifyourhand-heldcomputergoesintoashutdownmodebe-
cause oflowbatterycondition,dataisprotectedbythe
backupbattery.Your computer containstwo100 mAhour
vanadiumlithiumbackupbatteries.Thebackupbattery
chargesitself from themainpackorachargingsourcesoit
isconstantlyreadytotake overdataprotection.
Thisuser’sguidewill occasionallyusetheterm “cycles”
whenpresentingrechargeablebatteryinstructions.Cycles,
arethenumberoftimestherechargeablebatterypackcan
bechargedand discharged duringthelife ofbattery.The
LithiumIonrechargeablebatterydesign,usedinthemain
pack,shouldgiveyouapproximately500 cyclesofuse.
Therearenoguaranteesonthisnumberbecauseitdepends
greatlyon howthebatterypackisusedandcaredfor.
Memory
Three typesofmemoryareavailablewiththiscomputer:

StandardmainmemoryDRAM configurationis8mega-
bytes(MB),thiscanbe extendedto16,or32 MBs.Main
memorywasorderedat thetimeyourunitwaspurchased.
Youareabletoupgradetoalargermemorysizebyhavinga
newmemoryboardinstalledatyourCustomerSupport
Center.
Themainmemoryisprotectedbythebackupbatterydur-
inglowmainbatteryconditionsorwhenthemainbattery
packisremoved.

DifferentbrandsofPCcardscanbeusedinyourhand-held
computer.Memorycardsareavailableinavarietyofsizes
andtypes.CheckwithyourSalesRepresentative orSystem
Engineerforspecificoptions.
Your computerisequippedwiththree PCcardslots.These
slotscanbeusedwithmemorycardsforstorage ofdata,
muchlikeafloppydiskdrive onaPC.Theseslotscanalso
beusedformodems,radios,hard drives,andotheroptions
astheybecomeavailable.
Two ofthePCcardslotsareversion2.0TypeII andthe
otherslotisanATAcardslot.TypeIII cardscanbe
installedbutyousacrificeslotspace.TheATAandtwoPC
slotshavecardguides,but the emptybayontop doesnot.
Thereisnoblockagebetweenanyoftheslots,soanypairof
TypeII bayscanaccommodateaTypeIII card.
EXAMPLE:AType III ATAhard drivecardcan be installed inthe ATAslot, butit
takesup the PCslotBbay space.AType III PCcardinstalled inslot
Btakesup slotBand A;and a Type III PCcardinstalled inslotA
takesup slotAand the emptybay.

Inordertoconservepoweryourhand-heldcomputermay
automaticallysuspendwhentherehasbeen noactivityfor
asetperiodoftime.Thistimeisdeterminedbytheconfigu-
rationprogram.
Toforceasuspend,press thekeydefinedasthesuspend
keyandholdthekeydownforthree seconds.Toresume op-
eration,press the[I/O]key.Additionally,pressingthere-
leasebuttononthebatterypackdoorforcesasuspend.This
protectsagainstlosingdatawhenremovingthebattery
pack.
