Important Information
Thereareseveraladjustmentsavailablewhenthebackisusedonmanualandpowerwheelchairs.Thoseadjustmentsinclude
height,depthandangle.ThereisnoangleordepthadjustmentavailablewhenthebackisusedonInvacarePower
WheelchairswithPowerRecline.
Theproceduresintheinstallationsectionrequirea3/16Allenwrench.A7/16wrenchisrequiredisrequiredifinstallingthe
backontoanInvacarePowerWheelchairwithPowerRecline.
ThebackcushionisNOTdesignedforuseinthetreatmentofpressuresores.
Thebestwaytoavoidproblemsrelatedtopressuresoresistounderstandtheircausesandyourroleinaskinmanagement
program.
Yourtherapistandphysicianshouldbeconsultedifyouhaveanyquestionsregardingweightrelief,self‐examinationofskin,
orindividuallimitationsandneeds.
Allseatingsystemsshouldbeselectedcarefully.Workingwithyourtherapist,physicianandequipmentsupplieristhebest
waytoassurethataseatingsystemchoicematchestheindividualsneeds.
Astheneedsoftheindividualbecomemorecomplex,theInTouchPCSPositioningBackevaluationbecomesmoreimportant.
Seating Pressure Warning
Skinconditionshouldbecheckedfrequentlyaftertheinstallationanduseofanynewseatingsystem.
Installation Warnings
Afteranyadjustments,repairorserviceandbeforeuse,makesurethatallattachinghardwareistightenedsecurely.
DONOTinstalltheInTouchPCSPositioningBackontobackcaneswithanoutsidediametergreaterthan1”orlessthan7/8”
nominal(0.800”actual)‐otherwise,injuryordamagemayoccur.
EnsuretheInTouchPCSPositioningBackisproperlysecuredtothewheelchairbeforeusing.
Weight Capacity
 WARNING
The weight capacity of the back may be directly limited by the weight capacity of the wheelchair
that it is being installed and used on. The user’s weight MUST NOT exceed the weight capacity of
the wheelchair or back.

1. Loosen,butDONOTremove,thesocketheadscrews
onthebackcanemountingassemblies,justenoughto
allowthebackcanemountingassembliestosliponto
thebackcanes.
NOTE:Somewheelchairshavebackcaneswithabend.Make
surethatthebackcanemountingassembliesarecompletely
aboveorbelowandnotstraddlingthebend.
NOTE:Thereisaleft‐handandaright‐handbackcane
mountingassemblyusedwitheachInTouchPCSPositioning
Back.Wheninstalledproperly,theballisupandtheconeis
down,asshowninFIGURE2.1.
2. Slidethebackcanemountingassemblyontotheback
cane.
3. Alignthescoredverticallineontheoutsidebackcane
mountingassemblywiththecenterofthebackcane
asshowninFIGURE 2.2.
4. Adjustthebackcanemountingassembliesuntilthe
ballandconeoneachassemblyispositionedinward
ofthebackcanesasshowninFIGURE2.3.
5. Looselytightenthesocketheadscrewsontheback
canemountingassembly.
NOTE:DONOTtightenthesocketheadscrewscompletely
untilthebackisinstalledandcenteredbetweenthebackcanes.
6. RepeatSTEPS1‐5toinstalltheoppositebackcane
mountingassemblyontotheoppositebackcane.

The installed location of the back is directly related to the wheelchairs stability. Check the stability of the
wheelchair after installation and before use. Refer to STABILITY in the wheelchair Owner’s Manual.

1. Oneachbackmountingbracket,slightlypulloutasyou
rotatethebottomofthelatchoutward180°totheup
(unlocked)position.
2. Alignandputthereceiversonthebackmounting
bracketsontothebackcanemountingassembliesas
showninFIGURE2.4.
3. Adjustthebackcanemountingassembliesuntilthe
receiversarefullyseatedoneachsideandthebackis
centeredbetweenthebackcanes.
NOTE:Ifnootheradjustmentisneeded,proceedtoSTEP5.
NOTE:Thepositionofthesocketheadscrews,washerandnut
platescanbeadjustedintheslotsinthebackshellandback
mountingbrackets.RefertoFIGURE2.5.UseSTEP4tomake
theseadjustments.
4. Performthefollowing:
A. Removethebackcushion.Referto
Installing/RemovingtheBackCushiononpage 12.
B. Onbothsidesofthewheelchair,loosenbutDO
NOTremovethetwosocketheadscrewsthatsecure
thewasherplate,nutplateandbackmounting
brackettothebackshell.
C. Adjustthehardwareuntilthedesiredheightis
obtainedandthereceiversarefullyseatedontothe
backcanemountingassembliesasshownin
FIGURE 2.6.Makesurethebackiscentered
betweenthebackcanes.
D. Onbothsidesofthewheelchair,tightenthetwo
socketheadscrewsthatattachthewasherplate,nut
plateandbackmountingbrackettothebackshell.
E. Installthebackcushion.Referto

5. Oneachbackmountingbracket,rotatethelatch
outwardanddowntothelockedposition.
NOTE:Makesureanaudible“click”isheardforeachlatch.
6. Tightenthesocketheadscrewsonthebackcane

7. Pulluponthebacktomakesureitislockedinplace.

1. Oneachsideofthewheelchair,loosenbutDONOTremovethetwosocketheadscrewsthatsecurethebackshell
mountingbracketsandwasherplatestothebackcanemountingassemblies.
2. Adjustthebacktothedesireddepthand/orangle.
3. Tightenthesocketheadscrewssecuringthewasherplatesandbackshellmountingbracketstothebackcane
mountingassemblies.

1. Placeaflatwasherontotwohexheadscrews.
2. Insertahexheadscrewintoeachmountingholeinthe
backcanemountingbracket.
3. Looselyattachthehexheadscrewsandflatwashersto
thebackcanemountingbracketwithtwot‐nuts.
4. RepeatSTEPS1‐3toattachthehardwaretothe
oppositebackcanemountingbracket.
5. Alignandinsertthet‐nutsintotheT‐slotsintheback
canes.
6. Adjustthebacktothedesiredpositionontheback
canes.
7. Looselytightenthehexheadscrews.
NOTE:Ifnootherheightadjustmentisnecessary,proceedto
STEP11ofthisprocedure.
8. Oneachsideofthewheelchair,loosenbutDONOT
removethetwosocketheadscrewsthatsecurethe
backshellandwasherplatestothebackcane
mountingbracket.
9. Adjustthebacktothedesiredheightalongthevertical
slotsonbothsidesofthebackshell.
10. Tightenthesocketheadscrewssecuringthewasher
platesandbackshelltothebackcanemounting
brackets.
11. Securelytightenthehexheadscrews.
NOTE:Afterinstallationandbeforeuse,pulluponthebackto
ensureitislocked.
