2.1SafetyandHandling
Safetyandhandlingofthewheelchairrequiresthecloseattention
ofthewheelchairuseraswellastheassistant.Thismanualpoints
outthemostcommonproceduresandtechniquesinvolvedinthe
safeoperationandmaintenanceofthewheelchair.Itisimportantto
practiceandmasterthesesafetechniquesuntilyouarecomfortable
inmaneuveringaroundthefrequentlyencounteredarchitectural
barriers.
Usethisinformationonlyasa“basic”guide.Thetechniquesthatare
discussedonthefollowingpageshavebeenusedsuccessfullybymany.
Usersandassistantsmustbeawarethatthehandlingand
maneuverabilitycharacteristicsofthewheelchairareinherently
differentbasedonthedrivewheellocation.Handlingand
maneuverabilitydifferenceswillbemostnoticeablewhentraveling
downdeclines(Example:rampsandslopes)oroverobstaclesand
roughterrainasthismayshifttheuserscenterofmassforward
resultingindecreasedstability.ALWAYSreducespeedandwearthe
seatpositioningstrapwhendrivingundertheseconditions.
Individualwheelchairusersoftendevelopskillstodealwithdaily
livingactivitiesthatmaydifferfromthosedescribedinthismanual.

Ensurethatonlysecure,non-detachablepartsareusedforhand-hold

assistanthelpyoubeforeattemptingitalone.
2.3StabilityandBalance
Toassurestabilityandproperoperationofyourwheelchair,you

particularsafetylimits,practicebending,reachingandtransferring
activitiesinseveralcombinationsinthepresenceofaqualified
healthcareprofessionalbeforeattemptingactiveuseofthewheelchair
Engagemotorlocksandturnpoweroffbeforereaching,leaningor
bendingonlyasfarasyourarmwillextendwithoutchangingyour
