Overview
Differences between single and
multi-head FJ Printer models
While there are a few design differences between the one-head FJ
Printer and its mult-head siblings, most operating and maintenance
procedures remain the same—with the exception of cartridge align-
ment.
Design changes on multi-head models
nThe carriage holds multiple inkjet cartridges (Figure 2).
nThe Service Station cleans multiple print heads (Figure 3).
nThe power supply and Y-motor are larger.

Cartridge calibration
The Cartridge Calibration window is located in the Control Center
and can be accessed in the Tools menu. Step-by-step instructions on
the calibration process are provided in the FJ Printer & StudioJet
User Guide.
The examples below show different results and settings of the car-
tridge calibration window. If the FJ Printer is printing poorly, check
some of the examples here for a possible x.

Start with a frame gap of -30, and
all cartridges set to zero so you
can see a separation between the
heads. This will make it easier to
line the heads up with each other.

Calibration overview
Cartridge Calibration: Aligns the ink cartridges with each other.
On 1-head machines, cartridge calibration is
not neccessary.
Motion Adjustment: Aligns (side to side) each pass of the car-
riage with the next pass.
Frame Gap: Aligns (from top to bottom) each pass of the
carriage.
Cartridge alignment
Cartridge alignment will align the ink cartridges with each other.
This adjustment is only good for 2 or more heads. A one-head FJ
Printer does not need ink cartridge alignment.

Figure 4 shows a plot from a two head machine with a frame gap of -
30 and all cartridges set to zero in the Cartridge Alignment window.
As you can see, the heads don’t quite line up with each other.
Adjusting the cartridge alignment value
To align the cartridges on a two-head FJ Printer, run the plot le
70x8.plt for 72-in wide paper, or 40x8.plt for 63-in wide paper.
Compare the plot to Figures 7 & 8. Adjust the alignment values for
the second cartridge, as indicated, in the Calibration Alignment
window to bring the two lines into alignment.
It is not necessary to adjust cartridge #1.
