WARNINGS
Indications for Use
The IOPI®Trainer (Model 3.2) is used to increase the strength and endurance
of the tongue and lip in pa ents with oral motor disorders, including
dysphagia and dysarthria.
The IOPI® Trainer is intended for clinical or home use by pa ents under the
direc on of a medical professional.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
• Do not use with children under the age of 3.
• Do notapproveunsupervisedusebypaentswhoarementallyincapable
ofsafelyoperangtheIOPI®Trainer.
• Do notputtheTrainerBulbinapaent’smouthifthereisariskofthe
paenthavingaseizure.
• Do notusetheTrainerBulbwithapaentwhohasanycurrent
orpastproblemwithpaindisordersinvolvingthejawmusclesor
temporomandibularjoint(“TMJDisorder,”“MyofacialPainDisorder”).
CAUTION: This device is sold directly to pa ents only on the order of a medical
professional who will be direc ng the use of the device.

toperformamaximalmotortask,recognizingthatitmayproducea
generalizedeffortresponse.

NOTE: The medical professional should inform any pa ent who is to perform
tongue strengthening exercises or a tongue endurance measurement at 50%
or more of their maximum pressure that they may experience the sensa on
of “throat” soreness following the measurement. This condi on may persist
for as long as 24 hours.

The IOPI®Trainer
The IOPI® TrainerisadevicethatmustbeusedinparallelwiththeIOPI®
Pro(Model3.1)oraSeries2IOPI® (Models2.1,2.2,or2.3).Asdescribed
inthebiofeedbacksecon(page12),themaximumpressurevalue(Pmax)
isneededtocreateaneffecvetherapyplan.Pmaxcanonlybemeasured
using the IOPI® ProoraSeries2IOPI® device.
ThemainpurposeoftheIOPI® Traineristoallowfortheconnuaon
oftherapyathome.Thisallowsthepaenttobemoreindependentaer
inialinstruconfromthemedicalprofessional.
The IOPI® Trainerwasdesignedtobeeasytouseforthepaent.Thereare
onlytwobuonsintendedforpaentuse:thePowerbuon[] to turn
thedeviceonandoffandtheResetbuon[]tozerothesuccessful
repeoncountshownonthedisplay.Thesebuonsarecoloredyellow
toeasilydisnguishthemforthepaent.
TheTotalbuon[]on the IOPI®
Trainerallowsthemedicalprofessional
toeasilyviewthetotalnumberofsuccessfulrepeonswithouthavingto
connectthedevicetoacomputer.Themedicalprofessionalcanholdthe
paentimmediatelyaccountablefortheircompliancewiththeassigned
exerciseregimen.Forexample,ifthepaentwasassigned3setsof10
repeonstobeconductedonMonday,WednesdayandFriday,theirtotal
successfulrepeonsperweekshouldbe90(10repeons/setx3sets/
dayx3days).IftheIOPI®
Trainershowsaweeklytotalof46successful
repeonsinsteadof90,thenthemedicalprofessionalcanexplainto
thepaentthatiftheywanttoimproveandreachtheirgoals,theymust
complywiththetherapyprotocol.
OponalPC-basedsoware,calledIOPI® ReportGenerator,isavailable
forpurchasefromIOPI® Medical.Thissowareallowsthemedical
professionaltodownloadpaentusagedatafromtheIOPI® Trainer and
thenautomacallygeneratesadetailedpaentreport.Thisinformaon
mayassistthemedicalprofessionalinmakinginformeddecisionsabout
howtheprotocolparametersshouldbeadjusted.
Overall,theIOPI® Trainerisasafeandinnovavesoluontohome
healthcare for strengthening the tongue and the lips. The device has
beenengineeredtoprovideapaent-friendlyexperiencewithclinic
level results.

Biofeedback
How is the IOPI®used for exercise therapy?
InProgramMode,thepressurerequiredtoilluminatethegreenlightatthetopofthe
biofeedbacklightarraycanbeadjustedtoaspecicvalue.Thistargetvalueprovides
feedbacktothepaentregardinghisorherlevelofeffort.Themedicalprofessional
determineswhattargetvalueisappropriateforexercisetherapypurposesand
providesspecicinstruconstothepaentforaparcularexerciseprotocol.
Atypicalexerciseprotocolwouldincludethefollowingparameters:

Powerbuon[ ]unlPROG[ ]isdisplayedintheboomlecornerof
thescreen.Letgoofthebuons.
a. Adjust the Target Value:PresstheSetTargetarrowbuons[ ]unl
the screen shows the desired pressure value.
b. Clearing the Memory:HolddowntheResetbuon[]whilea
 countdownfrom3isdisplayedonthescreen,followedby000.Once
 the000isdisplayed,thememoryclearingprocessiscomplete.

professionalwithanopportunitytore-evaluatethepaent’sstrengthand
endurancemeasurementsusinganIOPI® Pro or IOPI® Series2device,review
homecomplianceintermsofbothusageandtechnique,andadjusttheexercise
protocolparametersifneeded.
Therearetwooponsforreviewingpaentusagedataduringfollow-up
appointments:
The medical professional can press and hold the Total bu on [ ] to
observe and record the number of successful repe  ons displayed on
the screen. This value re ects the total number of successful repe  ons
since the device memory was last cleared.
IOPI® Report Generator so ware allows the medical professional to
generate detailed pa ent usage reports on a PC. The report includes a
summary of pa ent usage, a bar graph for easily assessing pa erns
of successful versus failed repe  ons, and detailed rep and set
data including date,  me, target value, repe  on, maximum pressure,
target dura on, and success/failure status.

threemeswhenthedeviceisturnedon.Whenthememoryisfull,the“Err”
messageremainssolidandyourdevicecannotperformanyfunconsunlthe

Accuracy Check
Performthefollowingaccuracycheckmonthly.Thisprocedurecanbeperformed
bythemedicalprofessional.ItisacheckonlyandrequiresanIOPI® Pro device
(orIOPI® 2.1,2.2or2.3).IfyouwouldlikeIOPI® Medicaltocheckthecalibraon
rigorously¸ contact IOPI® Medicaloryourlocaldistributorforinstrucons.

1.SetuptheIOPI® Pro(orIOPI® 2.1,2.2or2.3):
a. Turn on the IOPI®
ProandpressthePeakbuon[ ].
 b. ConnectthelongerY-ConnectortubingtothePressureInport[].
2.SetuptheIOPI®
Trainer:
 a. EnterProgramModeontheIOPI®
Trainer by holding down the Target
 buon[]andthenpressingthePowerbuon[].TheProgram
 symbol[]shouldbeshownonthedisplay.
 b. UsetheSetTargetarrowsbu ons[ ]toadjustthetargetvalueto50kPa.
 c. ExitProgramModebyturningthedeviceoff.
 d. AachtheConnecngTubetothePressureInport[].
e.
ConnecttheshorterY-ConnectortubingtothemetalendoftheConnecngTube.
f. Turn the IOPI® TrainerbackonbypressingthePowerbuon[].
3.Setthesyringeplungertoapproximatelythe25ccmark.
4.Leavetheplungerinthisposionand
connect the syringe tubing to the
unoccupiedbarbontheY-Connector.
5.Observethebiofeedbacklightarrayon
the Trainer as you slowlycompressthe
plungeroftheaccuracychecksyringe.
Immediatelyreleasetheplungerwhen
thetopgreenlightilluminates.
NOTE: In order to gather accurate results
it is necessary to use slow, even pressure
when compressing the plunger.
6. Observe the pressure value on the IOPI®
Pro.Itshouldreadbetween48-52kPa.
7.Torepeatthisprocess,disconnectthesyringe,pressthe
Resetbuon[]onbothdevices,andgotostep3.
8.Ifyourpressurereadingisrepeatedlylessthan48kPaormore
than52kPa,contactIOPI® Medicaloryourlocaldistributor.
