Jøtul FS 84 - Advance is a freestanding product, which can be
positioned against infl ammable walls at the distances described
in fi g. 1A and fi g. 1B.
The installation of a fi replace must take place in accordance
with each country’s laws and regulations. All local ordinances
must also be complied with when products are installed.
The product has been tested and documented as a freestanding
stove in accordance with EN 13240.
The rating plate for the freestanding product comes with the
installation instructions for the surround. It should be positioned
in a suitably visible place.

3.0 Before installation
3.1 Distance to infl ammable material
See fi g. 1.
3.2 Foundations
You need to make sure the fl oor is suitable for the entire
installation. See “2.0 Technical data” for specifi ed weight.
Flooring that is not attached to the foundation – “fl oating fl oors”
– must be removed beneath the product.
Remember: If a steel chimney resting on the insert is being
used, the weight of the steel chimney must be taken into
account.
NB: It is extremely important to ensure that the product
is stable; the surface it is installed on must be completely
infl exible.
3.3 Floor covering
We recommend the removal of any fl ooring that is not attached
to the foundation (“fl oating fl oors”) beneath the installation.
Any fl oor covering of infl ammable material, such as linoleum,
carpets, etc. must be removed from under the installation area.
3.4 Floor plate
A plate made of steel or some other suitable non-infl ammable
metal (optional extra) is placed in front of the fi replace.

3.5 Air circulation requirements
Air shall be allowed to circulate between the insert and the
brickwork.
Important! Ensure that air vents in the room where the
fi replace is located are not blocked.
3.6 External air
A fl exible supply tube for combustion air (optional equipment,
art. no. 51012164) can be installed through a hole in the back
of the surround, or else through the hole cut where marked in
the bottom plate.
3.7 Steel chimney
If a top-mounted steel chimney is used, an uninsulated pipe is
fi tted from the insert to approximately 10 mm over the top grate.
A 50 mm off set pipe (optional extra) must be used. Then fi t the
steel chimney in accordance with the operating instructions.

4.0 Installation
The product is heavy! Ensure you have help when positioning
and installing it.
Make sure that the door to the burn chamber is closed during
installation so that the product is not nose-heavy. The product
must be secured so that it does not topple over while you are
installing it.
The product is supplied together with 2 manuals:
• Jøtul FS 84 Advance
• Jøtul F 370 Advance
Use the acrylic sealant provided for all joints.
4.1 Prior to installation
• The standard product is supplied in two packages: the
burn chamber and surround with mounting sections.
• Control handle set.
Before installing the fi replace, check it carefully for any signs
of damage.
Preparations
• Before a hole is made in the chimney, the product should
be test-mounted in order to correctly mark the position of
the fi replace and the hole in the chimney.
• When the product is unpacked, take out the ash pan and
its contents, the fi re grate, burn plates, baffl e and exhaust
defl ector. These parts are to be reinstalled when the
installation is fi nished.
• Remove the top plate with the grate. These parts are not
to be used.

4.2 Assembly of the Jøtul FS 84 - low
model

1. Spread the cardboard packaging over the fl oor, and lay the
stove down carefully on its side.

2. Screw in the 4 screws (fi g. 1 - part 3) approx. 10 mm and
lock in place with counter nuts. Then screw in the sleeve
nuts M8 x 30 (fi g. 1 - part 7) until about 6 mm away from the
counter nuts (fi g. 1 - part 6).
Replacing the control handle on the burn
chamber
The control handles on the Jøtul FS 84 Advance must be
replaced with the handles provided in the box.

3. Unscrew the stud bolts and nuts (A) and remove the handles
(B and C).
4. Unscrew the spacer (D) and lever (E).
5. Fit the new lever set in the same place.

6. Make sure that the arrow on the inside of the lever is
pointing towards the centre of the handle set.
4.3 Outside air connection (optional
extra)

• If the outside air connection (A) (item no. 51012164) is to
be used, this must be fi tted now. Refer to the manual for
the Jøtul F 370 Advance (item no. 10050848) and manual
(item no. 10026187) for Ø 100 mm outside air connection.

7. When using outside air connection through the fl oor (optional
extra, item no. 51012164), this must be fi tted now. Make a
hole in the recess (A) for the external air hose at the rear of
the bottom section. Route the hose out through the hole in
the bottom section.
8. Put the bottom plate (fi g. 1 - part 11) in place. Check using
a spirit level (B) and adjust as necessary using adhesive or
mortar. NB: It is extremely important that the bottom
plate is steady and level.

9. Insert the base (fi g. 1 - part 1) in the slots in the bottom
plate. Check that it is level.

10. Put the back plate (A) in place. The rear section has two
protrusions that slot (B) into the base.

11. Position the burn chamber in the four grooves in the base
(fi g. 1 - part 1). Level and adjust the burn chamber vertically
using the long nuts in the adjusting kit. Make sure the burn
chamber is fl ush with the front of the base. If using an
external air supply, make sure that the fl exible hose for the
outside air connection is not trapped. Route the hose out
through the hole in the rear of the base.

12. Adjust the burn chamber to fi t the hollow (A) on the inside
of the rear plate.

13. Push the thread bar (A) (fi g. 1 – part 2) through the hole
in the base and lock it underneath with a nut and washer.
Then slide the connection angle (B) (part 8) onto the
thread bar and hook it onto the insert. Lock in place with
nut. NB! Tighten the nut carefully

14. Move the side frames into position (A) (fi g. 1 - parts 17
and 18). NB: The side frames must be fl ush with the base
(fi g. 1 - part 1). Secure in place using acrylic adhesive.
15. Put the ash retainer in position (B) (fi g. 1- part 23).

16. Position cowl 1 in the slots. NB: When top-mounting a fl ue
pipe, glue the sealing plug (fi g. 1 - part 13) in place using
acrylic adhesive.

4.7 Chimney and fl ue pipe
• The fi replace must only be connected to a chimney and
fl ue pipe approved for solid fuel fi replaces with fl ue gas
temperatures as specifi ed in «2.0 Technical Data».
• The specifi ed distance to fl ammable materials, applies to
this stove.
• The stove must be installed with a CE approved fl ue.
• The distance of the fl ue pipe to combustible materials must
also be observed.
• The cross-section of the chimney must be designed to fi t
the fi replace. Use «2.0 Technical Data» to calculate the
correct chimney cross-section.
• The chimney must be connected in accordance with the
installation instructions of the chimney supplier.
• Before a hole is made in the chimney, the product should
be test-mounted in order to correctly mark the position of
the fi replace and the hole in the chimney. See fi g. 1 for
minimum dimensions.
• With a rear outlet, use a fl ue pipe bend with a sweep hatch
to allow sweeping.
• Please note that it is extremely important for connections
to have a degree of fl exibility. This is to prevent any
movement in the installation leading to the formation of
cracks.
• For recommended chimney draught, and fl ue pipe
dimension see “2.0 Technical Data”. NB: The chimney’s
diameter must be at least just as big as the fl ue pipe.
4.5 When using heat-accumulating
stones (optional extra)

3. Screw the screws into the fi rst stone. Let the screws stand
out 28 mm on the outside.

pipe. Make sure the fl at side is facing forward. NB: Adjust
the screws so that the stones are stable.

7. Put the top crown (fi g. 1 - part 14) in place. Cut out the
centre of the top grate (see fi g. 23) (fi g. 1 - part 9) and lay
it on the top crown.
4.6 Installation using top outlet
Flue pipe at top outlet
The product is assembled with the smoke outlet fi tted for a
top outlet as standard. Off set pipe, 50 mm, for a top outlet is
supplied as an optional extra.

2. Place the gasket (B) on the edge of the off set pipe (A).
3. Fit an off set pipe, 50 mm (optional extra).
4. Make sure that the gasket is properly seated between the
off set pipe and the smoke outlet.

sealant provided for all joints.
4.4 Chimney and fl ue pipe
